For the Summer Games, athletes representing Great Britain first competed at the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, taking part in the sports or disciplines of artistic gymnastics, athletics, road cycling, track cycling, shooting, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. At the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, the first athletes representing Great Britain to win Olympic medals did so on the same day, capturing a bronze in the men’s athletics 400m event as well as a silver and a gold in the men’s weightlifting events. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Great Britain first competed at the I Olympic Winter Games Chamonix 1924, participating in the sports or disciplines of bobsleigh, curling, figure skating, ice hockey and speed skating. At the I Olympic Winter Games Chamonix 1924, athletes representing Great Britain won a first Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the men’s curling event.

Great Britain won two medals at the 2022 Games, both in curling. The NOC's women's and men's teams each made their respective gold medal games, with the women winning against Japan while the men lost their final to Sweden. It was the third Olympic curling triumph for Great Britain, with the women's team having won gold in 2002 in Salt Lake City, as well as bronze in 2014. In addition to their victory in 1924, the British men's team also won a silver medal in 2014. Only one British curler, Eve Muirhead, has more than one Olympic medal, having skipped both the 2014 and 2022 women's teams. Great Britain also nearly won a medal in the curling mixed team event in Beijing, but lost the bronze medal match to Sweden. Outside the curling rink, athletes representing Great Britian won a medal in skeleton at each of the five Games from 2002 to 2018, but the NOC's skeleton sliders in Beijing failed to reach the podium. Great Britain's youngest competitor in Beijing was freestyle skier Kirsty Muir, who posted a best finish of fifth in the women's big air event at age 17. Also in Beijing, the NOC's bobsleigh 4-man crew and the snowboard cross mixed team both finished sixth.
