Fire Damages Adventist Church in Barcelona, No Injuries Reported

A fire broke out Thursday afternoon, March 19, at a Seventh-day Adventist church in the Sants neighborhood of Barcelona, Spain, causing significant damage but no reported injuries. The incident occurred shortly after 3:00 p.m., with firefighters responding quickly and extinguishing the blaze within minutes.

Church leaders said the fire likely started from a short circuit near the entrance that affected an air conditioning unit, though the exact cause is still under investigation. The flames damaged the building’s facade and entrance, while smoke and water affected much of the interior. Two workers were on site at the time but were unharmed.

Cleanup and damage assessment efforts are ongoing, and the church building remains closed. Leaders are considering holding Sabbath services at nearby churches while repairs are planned. Church officials have called for prayer and support, expressing gratitude that no lives were lost.

Newton served the Pacific Union Conference as associate ministerial secretary on a volunteer basis, offering event planning and support to pastoral spouses and families. She was also a consultant and teacher of Christian financial seminars. Before that, she worked as assistant vice president and regional audit manager for General Motors Commercial Finance.

Newton held a bachelor’s degree from Andrews University, an MBA in project management, and certification as a faith-based meeting professional. She is remembered for her thoughtful service, professional excellence, and enduring commitment to ministry in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

A Review of Walter Utt: Adventist Historian (Silver Spring, Md.: General Conference Archives Monographs, 2023), by D. J. B. Trim

Though David Trim is too young to have been a student of Walter Utt, legendary history teacher at Pacific Union College, he has done a great deal to memorialize him, such as editing an impressive festschrift in his honor and helping to envision and then create an Utt archival center in Angwin, California. In this…

Resisting the Prophet Motive: A Review of Braving the Truth

Rachel Held Evans died seven years ago. Reading this book, I feel separated from her by a gulf far broader than that. She died before the COVID-19 pandemic, the murder of George Floyd, the 2020 US election, and the January 6th riots. It is impossible to know what she might have said and written if she were alive today. Instead, how do the people who knew her best dialogue with who she was and what she said?

An Exercise of Faith

Rooted in the concepts of justification, redemption, atonement, and adoption, the Bible uses many metaphors to explain the meaning of salvation. One of these is walking.
