Profile

Sumia is a childhood friend of Cordelia, with the two desiring to join the Ylissean Pegasus Knights. Both were officially trained by the captain of the Ylissean Pegasus Knights, Phila. While Cordelia would eventually go on to become a full-fledged member of the knights, Sumia joined Chrom's vigilante group, the Shepherds, instead.

Sumia is first introduced in Chapter 2 when Lissa brings Robin to the Shepherds' barracks. When she approaches Chrom, she promptly trips, leaving her embarrassed. Chrom announces that they will be marching to Ferox to seek aid from them to deal with the constant threats of war from Plegia. Sumia tells Chrom that she does not think she is ready for a battle yet, so Chrom tells Sumia to watch from the sidelines.

After defeating the Risen at Northroad, Chrom finds a feral pegasus. Unable to tame it, Sumia appears and is able to soothe it. Sumia opts to remain behind to further tend to it while the rest of the Shepherds continue to Ferox. Later, when the party arrives at The Longfort, the Feroxi army believes that Chrom is an impostor and promptly attacks him. Just as Chrom is about to be hit by multiple Javelins, Sumia makes a timely rescue on the pegasus she encountered earlier. Robin becomes inspired by Chrom and Sumia riding on the pegasus to create the Pair Up strategy.

Before learning of Emmeryn's sentence in Plegia, Chrom is in internal strife from worrying about his sister. Concerned for him, Sumia tries to snap him out of his doldrums. Remembering advice from Philia, Sumia punches Chrom in the face. While the hit manages to snap Chrom back to his senses, Chrom is left slightly dazed. Lissa reveals to Sumia that normally, people slap people in the face to achieve the same effect, much to Sumia's embarrassment.

Sumia remains a stalwart member of the Shepherds throughout the Ylisse-Plegia conflict and beyond. If Sumia is not married at the end of Awakening, she lays down her lance and receives a stretch of land from Chrom to raise Pegasi, and her flower fortunes were said to bring good luck to those who received them from her.

Sumia is one of five women of the Shepherds that can marry Chrom at the end of the Ylisse-Plegia conflict. With Chrom ascending the throne and becoming the new Exalt, Sumia in turn becomes the new Queen of Ylisse. During the two years after the war with Plegia, Sumia and Chrom sired a daughter named Lucina who bears the mark of the Exalt on her left eye. After two years of peace, the continent of Valm across the western sea launches a massive invading force to conquer Ylisse. Despite Chrom's concerns, Sumia volunteers to join her husband on the battlefield once more, leaving Lucina to be cared for by their attendants while they are off at war. At the Carrion Isle, Sumia witnesses Chrom speaking to the woman who had referred to herself as the Hero King Marth during the Ylisse-Plegia war. Worrying that Chrom was going to leave her, the woman lays Sumia's worries to rest by revealing the Brand of the Exalt, the same one as her infant Lucina. Realizing that this is a future version of her daughter, Sumia and Lucina share a loving embrace, allowing her daughter to finally be together with her lost family.

Paralogue

In the future, Sumia can become a mother if she achieves an S-Support with one of her allies, resulting in her giving birth to a daughter, Cynthia. As mentioned above, she can marry Chrom, making her the mother of Lucina. If she supports Robin instead, she becomes the mother of Morgan. Otherwise, Cynthia is an only child.

In Paralogue 9, Chrom and the Shepherds arrive at a village only to find all of the villagers terrified of Chrom. The Shepherds discover that a bandit, Ruger, has taken on Chrom's name despite the clear dissimilar appearances. More so, a young, fledgling Pegasus Knight has also joined "Chrom." During the battle, the young girl may approach Sumia. The girl, revealed to be Cynthia, notices Sumia's ring and happily introduces herself as Sumia's future daughter. After clearing the confusion over "Chrom", Cynthia joins the Shepherds and routs the bandit.

In the aftermath of the battle, Sumia and Cynthia have a tearful conversation in which Sumia learns that her daughter inherited her habit of tripping over nothing. Sumia notices that Cynthia dropped a spearhead, which Cynthia reveals was part of a lance the two were going to build before Sumia died in the fight against the Risen. Sumia happily accepts her daughter and promises to help craft the lance her future self was going to make with her.

According to Cynthia's supports with Sumia, Cynthia grew up admiring Sumia most, adopting many of her quirks from her love of flower fortunes and Sumia's unfortunate knack for tripping at inopportune times. Sumia and Cynthia had a final project to make Cynthia's first lance, but Sumia was killed when they had only completed to the spear tip. Not only was Sumia's wedding ring given to Cynthia, but Sumia's own pegasus mount found her way back to Cynthia, thus making her the pegasus' new master, which she subsequently brought back to the past.

Personality

Sumia is a kind soul who loves flowers and animals. She is klutzy and prone to small mishaps. In fact, her clumsiness is so bad that she trips over nothing more than anyone in the Shepherds, much to her embarrassment. Because of this, she has rather low self-esteem and feels that she is unsuited for her job, but still does her best whenever she can. Despite her clumsy habits, she holds a hidden strength that most people lack, constantly striving to protect her friends and take care of them.

She has a strong affinity for animals and can read their feelings very well. She used this ability to calm and tame an injured pegasus that was feral to everyone else. Even a horse that Frederick could not tame was quickly quelled by Sumia. Her best friend is her fellow Pegasus Knight Cordelia, who is always there to help her when she is in trouble, and admires her flawless demeanor. Despite her occasional mishaps, Sumia has a quiet strength and resolve that allow her to be a powerful ally in battle.

Sumia is an avid reader as she uses them to escape reality and her flaws. She sometimes roleplays as the characters in the stories in hopes of becoming more confident. Sumia collects discarded books and loves to recommend them to others, such as Robin. Her favorite stories are the Ribald Tales of the Faith War.

Sumia also enjoys doing flower fortunes and often plucks hundreds of flower petals at a time. She does this to give her a boost in confidence in battle; bad fortune readings motivate her to overturn them, while good fortunes encourage her to make sure that they come true. This eventually becomes one of her most notable traits, so much so that her daughter inherited this ritual. If she is Chrom's queen, her flower fortunes became good luck charms to the citizens of Ylisse.

As the first aerial unit recruited, Sumia can provide very useful utility early on and continue to be very solid throughout the game. In terms of her stats, she gains Skill, HP, and Speed quickly, with her other stats growing decently well. Pairing her up with a compatible unit can highlight her potential, as her mobility is a great asset, and her Speed and Skill pair-up bonuses allow them to frequently double and finish off opponents much more easily. As an archetypal Pegasus Knight, she can be somewhat fragile and sometimes lacks offensive capability against high-defense units like knights on higher difficulties. Keeping her out of range of Archers will ensure that she stays as safe as possible.

In contrast to Cordelia, Sumia's Magic growth rate and stat caps are higher, giving her utility as a Falcon Knight healer or offensive diversity as a Dark Flier mage. However, the growth is still quite low, and her magical offense may take some time to catch up to other Magic units in the game, but it may become worthwhile. Her higher Speed and Skill will also mean that she will double attack and critical much more often. Sumia should spend some time in the Dark Flier class regardless of the player's final class for her, since she can learn the useful Galeforce. It is also important to note that her Magic cap in the Dark Flier class are higher than her strength caps as a Falcon Knight, and access to both Lancefaire and Tomefaire (as well as the high-damaging Luna) make her a potent force while in this class, capitalizing on both her mobility and offensive prowess. Nevertheless, Sumia as a Falcon Knight has its perks of slightly higher speed and skill caps over Dark Flier. Furthermore, her access to Healtouch from the Cleric line makes her capable in healing, in addition to the class's Lancefaire skill padding her offensive capability.

Reclassing

Sumia's two class options are Cleric and Knight. As a Cleric, she may lose her ability to attack, but she learns Miracle, which, given her high Luck, she can survive battles in dire situations. As a War Cleric, Sumia is as strong as Lissa, but is faster and has higher Skill. The biggest gift from this class is Renewal, which should be on her regardless of her ultimate class, since Relief alone is not useful in tight gameplay. Sage wise, Sumia is not as stellar as Miriel or Ricken, and the skill to pull from this class would be Tomefaire to boost her magic offensive as a Dark Flier.

Sumia as a Knight makes for a very interesting unit. She is much faster than Kellam and has more skill, leading to more double attacks and criticals. Sumia learns a few worthwhile skills in the Knight tree. The General class' Pavise can be useful for patching her shoddy defense. Great Knight's Luna, as mentioned, gives Sumia more damage output, which gives her the ability to severely damage high-defense units. Dual Guard+ is also great for her to protect her in times of need, as well as give her partner a boost to Dual Guard activations.

Sumia also has the option to be a solid Rally unit, as she has 5 Rally skills at her disposal: Rally Speed, Rally Movement, Rally Magic, Rally Luck, and Rally Defense.

Inheritance

Sumia is a unique mother as she has only five options for a husband, one of them being Chrom, letting her be a potential mother to Lucina. Sumia is a fairly popular choice for her mother as the game itself heavily promotes the pairing with one of the fastest support gains between Sumia and Chrom and is given the highest priority in the mandatory S-Rank Chrom must form at the end of Chapter 11 in the case of a tie with the other bachelorettes.

Sumia gives Lucina the largest boost to her Speed of her potential mothers and also a moderate amount of Skill. Her only negative modifier from Sumia is her drop to Defense, but her highly evasive growths and stat caps makes this slightly moot. Lucina inherits extremely strong classes from Sumia, first and foremost being Sumia's base Pegasus Knight class, which in turn entails the coveted Galeforce skill, which in turn is a strong skill for Lucina to immediately inherit from Sumia. Sumia also gives her the Knight class which entails strong skills like Luna and Pavise, both of which compliments her innate Rightful King skill. Cleric similarly provides her with Miracle to save her in a pinch plus Renewal for stable health regeneration.

Etymology

Sumia is an Islamic name that means "The one who listens".[1]

It could be a variant of the Arabic feminine name Sumayya, meaning "high above", possibly referring to her class as a pegasus knight.[2]

Trivia

  • In her support conversation with Robin, she mentions that she reads a book called "Ribald Tales of the Faith War", a reference to the first Jugdral Series game, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. The name of the game itself is said in the Japanese version of Awakening.
  • Sumia's official artwork depicts her wielding a Luna.
  • Although both Sumia and Chrom can marry other units, Sumia is seen as Chrom's wife in the opening movie sequence.
  • The Japanese trailer that revealed marriage and children in Awakening showed Sumia and Robin as a couple.
  • Sumia placed 15th out of 25 females in the official popularity poll of Awakening.
  • Sumia shares her English voice actress, Eden Riegel, with Nah.
    • She also shares her Japanese voice actress, Ayano Yamamoto, with her daughter Cynthia.
  • There is a glitch during Lucina's reunion scene with Maribelle as her mother; Sumia appears in this scene for no reason and says nothing during this scene.
  • During EXPonential Growth, she says "You shall not pass", possibly referencing the famous quote made by Gandalf in The Fellowship of the Ring.
  • Sumia has the fewest S Rank support conversations of all the female parent characters in Awakening.
    • Due to her limited number of potential husbands compared to other female characters, Sumia is the only character who can miss the opportunity to conceive her child if all of her options have been married off, thus preventing the player from recruiting Cynthia.
  • The cutscene in which Sumia rescues Chrom at the Longfort is labelled "Lovebirds", which comes from the lasting phrase of two people sharing a romantic moment. This cutscene title applies to both the Japanese and North American versions of the game, but is called "The Rescue" in the European version.
  • In Sumia's Summer Scramble conversation with Miriel, she says "And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for your meddling experiments!", which is a reference to the famous quote from the children's media franchise Scooby-Doo.
