Given that the Forgotten Realms are the default setting, I think WOTC missed a good opportunity to add a paragraph to each setting they've released, telling us which door in the World Serpent Inn leads to it, and establishing the WSI in the canon.

Even the exit of the doors themselves can be instant adventure hooks to the world. For example, the door to Krynn closes shut unless the PCs go on a scavenger hunt for some items the Kender overseeing the door wants.

The door that leads to Athas is under lock and key. Sand sweeps out from under it and it's warm to the touch. Those are cool little details (not mine, they are from a Dragon article). The WSI is a really flavorful way to travel the multiverse, and they've ignored it.

No insight, just a guess: as Hasbro licenses out settings and parts of settings (hence the 5e Realms sticking to the Sword Coast), having a clear canon connection between them all is no longer desirable.
