For the Summer Games, athletes representing the Republic of Korea first competed at the Games of the XIV Olympiad London 1948, taking part there in the sports or discipline of athletics, basketball, boxing, road cycling, football, weightlifting and wrestling. At the Games of the XIV Olympiad London 1948, Sung-Jip Kim became the first athlete representing the Republic of Korea to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s weightlifting middleweight event. At the Games of the XXI Olympiad Montreal 1976, Jeong-Mo Yang became the first athlete representing the Republic of Korea to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s wrestling freestyle featherweight event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing the Republic of Korea first competed at the V Olympic Winter Games St. Moritz 1948, taking part there in the discipline of speed skating. At the XIV Olympic Winter Games Albertville 1992, Yoon-Man Kim became the first athlete representing the Republic of Korea to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing silver in the men’s speed skating 1,000m event. At the same Games edition, Ki-Hoon Kim became the first athlete representing the Republic of Korea to win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the men’s short track speed skating 1,000m event.

After winning 17 medals as host to PyeongChang 2018, including first ever medals in bobsleigh, curling, skeleton and snowboard, the Republic of Korea returned from Beijing 2022 with nine medals from two disciplines, including its equal-lowest golden medal haul since the NOC won its first Winter Games medals in 1992. The NOC's two gold medals in Beijing came in short track speed skating - Hwang Daeheon won the first in the men's 1500m event, followed by Choi Minjeong's triumph in the women's 1500m, an event Choi also won gold in at PyeongChang 2018. Both Choi and Hwang were Republic of Korea's only multi-medallists in Beijing, with Hwang also claiming silver in the men's 5000m relay while Choi was the only Korean to win three medals in Beijing, adding to her 1500m gold with a pair of silver medals in the women's 1000m and women's 3000m relay events. The NOC's youngest medallist in Beijing was Seo Whi Min, who took silver as part of the women's 3000m relay team alongside Choi. In speed skating, Chung Jaewon and Lee Seung Hoon took silver and bronze, respectively, in the men's mass start event, while Cha Min Kyu picked up a silver in the men's 500m and Kim Min Seok a bronze in the men's 1500m. Outside of the short track and speed skating rinks, the closest Republic of Korea came to a medal in Beijing was figure skater Cha Jun Hwan, who finished fifth in men's single skating, and snowboarder Lee Sangho, who finished fifth in men's parallel giant slalom. Also in figure skating, 17-year-old You Young finished sixth in women's single skating.
