This morning I participated in the Chatham House Resilience and Recovery Forum: Energy Security, Defensive Innovation and Lessons from Ukraine. I shared reflections from our experience at DTEK managing an energy system under sustained attack. It was encouraging to see the discussion placing energy squarely in a security context. Energy infrastructure has become a target in modern conflict, and Ukraine’s experience offers lessons that Europe can proactively address. The future of energy systems needs to be designed with security and resilience in mind — including more distributed generation and storage, digitalisation, and stronger system adaptability. Africa’s energy story is one of a paradox, with millions of people still entrenched in energy poverty, but with a continent that is richly endowed in energy resources that can drive immense social and economic prosperity. The need for accelerated energy infrastructure development underpinned by bankable projects, capable institutions, collaborative public-private partnerships and a skills base that is ready to assume its a place in a rapidly transforming global energy system, has never been greater. These issues will be at the heart of discussions at this year's Africa Energy Indaba (3–5 March 2026, CTICC, Cape Town), taking place under the theme “African Energy – Pathways to Prosperity (Choices for Capital, Community, Commerce and Climate)” where SACIT will be represented by Thapelo Tladi. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria and Abdourahamane Tiani of Niger confirmed that construction of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) is expected to start after Ramadan. With the feasibility study led by Penspen nearing completion, the 4,128 km pipeline could link Nigerian gas to Algeria’s export infrastructure and open a strategic route to Europe. At an estimated $13B, supported by existing infrastructure and renewed political momentum, the TSGP stands out as one of the most realistic near-term mega energy projects in Africa. The East Mediterranean Gas Forum’s planned push to help individual projects attract more Gulf investments is welcome but rife with uncertainty, analysts say. The grouping of Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan and Palestine is establishing a unit tasked with making projects more appealing to investors from outside the region, its secretary-general Osama Mobarez said at a recent event. The Eastern Mediterranean has an abundance of gas resources and significant potential for exports, especially to the power-hungry EU. But regional competition, political dynamics and underinvestment constrain countries’ ability to get the gas out of the ground. “A key challenge in the Eastern Mediterranean is to increase exploration and add to discovered resources,” said Ben Cahill, director for energy markets and policy at the University of Texas at Austin.
