The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve.
Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.
If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.

It's crazy that I'm seeing proof of how detrimental this is in real time, on THIS post. If you look at the notes on this post from the POV of the original, on desktop, it sits at around 7,700 notes. Which is a decent number, and it keeps a-tickin' on up. But.
But hey. My phone app hasn't been updated. So I checked there. And guess how many notes this post REALLY has, including the ones from reblogs?
That's 60k notes that you would NEVER know were for THIS ORIGINAL POST because, oops, Tumblr is hiding them and giving them to everyone else without letting you see them on OP's version.
Now imagine that's an artist. Imagine that's a writer. Imagine that you're a creator who posted your work, and you got that smaller number, and you had NO IDEA that you were only seeing about 11% of your actual engagement because the other 89% was hidden from you.
