>Are mystery dungeon games allowed in this thread?
Generally yes, most mystery dungeon games(Shiren the Wanderer, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, etc.) can be considered roguelikes
>Is Elin/Elona allowed?
Yes, they are roguelikes. Please do not post your Little Sister farms
>Is Dwarf Fortress allowed?
If it's adventure mode, yes. But adventure mode is boring. /tg/ has a general for fortress mode playthroughs but you can share here too!

Dungeon crawl is the kind of roguelike where for every step forward, the devs make two step backward. Ie change the random rng shaft mechanic with a semi random doom mechanic that seem way too eager to fuck you over in worse ways. I mean I've hit more -3 layers shaft since .34 than I did playing crawl for years, its just stupid. I mean it isnt even fun or challenging, it just feel like a definitive run ender with extra steps the majority of the time and you just rush for upstair to survive.
>>
>>559856482
You have +4 stealth aptitude for a reason, you should always invest a lot and straight away. No AC means there are just fights you can't win so being able to avoid them entirely is useful. You also need to invest in a shield as soon as you get one and dodging too. Species with weak defence need to invest more.

I think I'm done with Achra for now. 7 32 Cycle wins proves I've beaten the game legit plenty. I'm sick of the slot machine rugpull nature of the game. I might as well just re-install Mahjong Soul if I have a craving for luck with a hint of skill style gameplay.
>>
>>559931874
I feel you, my poison/plague guy got shreked the other day due to RNG putting the King about two or maybe it was three steps away. Close enough so my summons couldn't block his path in time and he was on top of me before I could apply enough stacks to kill him. I had his health down by 1/3 when he splatted me, if he had been just one or two tiles further away I would have had time to wreck him, or if I hadn't spawned in a corner I could have run away until summons gave me breathing room.

Pretty frustrating. I'll probably go back to Nethack, it rewards skill a lot more.

I really wouldn't be surprised if there was a way to win Achra 100% of the time with one of the top tier builds. It seems less randomized than DCSS to me. Of course there are bad combos that can occasionally put you in unwinnable situations, but there are other roguelikes where not all games are winnable.

DCSS is infinitely more skill based because of items. You always are given enough tools to get out of fucked up situations. Achra is like playing a perpetually confused, berserked, MuMo who worships the troll god.
>>
>>559943664
Yeah, if I had to guess there are probably like ~10 prestiges that are only there for the people who like to experiment with suboptimal setups for novelty and challenge. Of course we probably couldn't all agree if we tried to make a list of those bad prestiges.
>>
>>559944851
>You always are given enough tools to get out of fucked up situations.
You aren't always given enough tools, though. You can start a game as an Octopode and run into a halberd gnoll on D1 as your first enemy. The only place you can run away is back out the dungeon. I think the general consensus is that the game gets more skill based the further into the run you get, whereas even great players can occasionally splat on D1-3 for no fault of their own.
>>
>>559945242
Is this nu-crawl logic? Or maybe playing meme races/ builds only? I'm literally the most horrible Crawl player ever and I never die that early in the run.
>>
>>559945242
octopode has high natural stealth and swims
>>
How to fix Achra:
1. Show what the mid game and end game boss are on the overworld so players can plan accordingly like StS does.
2. Introduce some kind of item system
>>
>>559946392
I'd add: add some more gameplay outside picking builds and spells and items, once you're on the floor you've done 90% of the gameplay decisions
>>
>>559946392
>1. Show what the mid game and end game boss are on the overworld so players can plan accordingly
I would be in favor of that sort of change too, but the actual high skill play is to be prepared for all 4 possible kings. That usually means leaving some skill points unspent and only picking 2 schools, so that you can dump points into whichever school helps beat the King once you know which one you're facing. Like if it's the Death King and you're an attack build, you might be forced to pick Master Doom because you're going to get 5000 stacks of Doom from attacking his Doom Skin. Leaving that 3rd school open is the best way to reduce RNG. Alternatively just play a build OP enough that you can kill him instantly, but most builds aren't OP enough to ignore the mechanics like that.
>>
>>559946392
StS only allows you to see in advance 1/3 of the game, and in ascension 20 you more or less have to build your deck around every possible Act 3 boss since double boss means it's more likely you meet a boss than not.

>>
>>559966873
Rift Wizard is similar to Achra in that it has a lot of chaining effects and gimmicky builds to experiment with. I would say the tactical choices inside a level of Rift Wizard are much more interesting than Achra. You have a much larger variety of options at any given time in Rift Wizard because it has activatable items and no limit on your number of spells.

The problem is that the build making in Rift Wizard gets constrained because on 95% of builds you HAVE to take a blink spell, you HAVE to take the chain reaction package (Prince of Ruin, Starfire, Cracklevoid), and you HAVE to take Word of Chaos. If you try to play without the usual crutches then you're usually just being suboptimal. Basically half of your skill points are already decided before you even pick your build. Achra doesn't have so many no-brainer choices because it limits you to 3 schools, whereas in Rift Wizard you get all the schools of magic, and you should really take the good shit from all of them whenever they're relevant.

I'm inclined to say that Caves of Qud protagonist is the strongest no matter what, simply because of precognition and sphynx salt injectors.
He's the only rogueliker with canon ability to savescum. Doesn't get any stronger than that.
>>
Tome4 protag is the strongest because it could legally corrupt your save file (the equivalence of shattering an entire universe from within)
>>
>>560000037
Do elaborate, i like reading this kind of stuff (why it happens, etc)
>>
>>560006182
The game has multiple "time traveling" abilities, which basically copies your save file, then mucks with it when you die or when you activate an ability. But like 99% of stuff in tome4 it's highly unmaintained so it might work 9 out of 10 times and the other time it corrupts your save.
Also the game has several "infinite" dungeons like the monster portal in sher'tul or the infinite dungeon mode, and unfortunately whenever you generate a new floor the dev never bothers to clean up old ones so the save file keeps building up. Some data structures in the game more or less just breaks down past a "small" number of floors (like 50). So much for infinite.
>>
>>560006868
Interesting, gonna check if there is an wiki article or something becsuse i am a nerd when it comes to save corruption and shit
>>
>>559902169
shoulda leveled your keeper as much as you can. and capture high level ranged enemies like elven archers.
didn't get much out of the regular dudes myself, would need to micromanage so much to keep them alive for them to level up meaningfully high, and that would take ages because it's so fucking slow. so mostly it was just keeper killing everything with archers supporting and the rest being meat shields. werewolves were okay I guess.
>>
>>559983406
You WILL take batform
You WILL take starcult
You WILL take master repulsion
>>
>>560013645
You're limited to 3 schools, bro. Even if some of the Achra abilities are OP, you just can't take them every game. In Rift Wizard you can take Word of Chaos and Prince of Ruin every game. That's the distinction I'm getting at. The game doesn't even really function as a roguelike with randomized experiences until you start doing trials. Improvisor is my preferred way to play RW2 nowadays for that exact reason.
>>
wtf when did DCSS remove food?
>>
>>560025452
They just replaced it with the zot clock so something can still punish a player for wasting turns without progress but now it's not a random factor of if you find enough food. Definitely part of the speedrun bias of current DCSS design though.

Trying to play frogcomposband 7.2 downloaded at https://github.com/Gliktch/frogcomposband/releases

Unzipping the frogcomposband-v7.2.pulla-windows-x86_64.zip and running the exe results in the brief appearance of a white window plus the cursor goes into circle mode for a couple seconds then nothing happens.

Can anyone confirm if the executable works (or doesn't work) so I'll know what to tell the dev?

Yes, but in the same way that a fictional universe where aliens built the pyramids and the Earth is 6,000 years old would "mean people who don't believe snopes" are right

They're right in that universe, where the fantastical and supernatural exist purely because the writers said so.

If I write a loredump where videos of Deep Ones are written off as AI fakes that doesn't mean you should start believing every video you see about Cthulhu and Hyperborean White Boys

Not even close, and it's not even a very good game (I'd even go so far as to say it's barely a game at all.) It's closer to a time-wasting trinket, like an auto-battler or an idler. Almost no gameplay, it's just setting up your little automatic-win machine, and it either works or it doesn't.

Yeah, you have +3 apt I think. Wear medium armor and you can get decent stealth score still plus stabbing damage (which you get a lot of) is calculated using both weapon skill and stealth so get a fair bit of it. Would wear ringmail early then aim for fire or ice dragon armor or a good artifact.

How else do you propose I do a mostly pure ant army run on C32? I'm not even sure if it's possible, unironically. I think I'm gonna need lots of backup from other types of summons if I attempt it again. Formus might genuinely be the worst god in the game.
>ants summon on game turn
>prayers refresh on... when your ant kills something (lol)
>when an adjacent ally is damaged by an enemy (might as well say when you breakdance backwards on a pile of glass during a lunar eclipse)
>double your ants once a floor (all die in 1 second of fighting a boss)
This is why I chose crystalform. To slow shit down and speed up my ant farm.
>>
>>560168240
Forest mask does the same thing as crystal form for summoner builds, entangle strips speed.

Just because it's the ant god doesn't mean you need to build around ants, anon. Here's a briar mage projective link build I slapped together in two minutes just now. Used Formus prayer 1 to get an army on entrance, prayer 2 to buff them and summon more. I straight up forgot to take sustain, literally my only healing was from leveling vigor. My main hand was completely irrelevant to the build, I used it solely because it had a range of 2 so I could be lazy and just tab towards enemies while staying in prayer 2 trigger range.

>>560174271
>>560174926
Achra is legitimately a roguelike and is also fun. It's unintuitive and unbalanced, but this is true of every single game in the genre that isn't called Rift Wizards. The art is nice, the mechanics and (scant) writing are highly polished, the enemies are challenging without being total horseshit (mostly), it has a surprising amount of gameplay variety, and the short length makes it accessible in a way that most rogues can't match - and it does this without sacrificing build depth or difficulty.
It's not the GOAT roguelike or anything, but it's very good at being what it's trying to be.

Anyone ever have problems connecting batteries in 0.H DDA?
I'm squatting at a house, in a room with a window leading to a section of a roof, where I placed some solar panels. I had a number of large storage batteries (50k each) placed next to each other, with the intent of swapping some of them in and out of the grid for use in my car. That way, the capacities of each battery got added, and then I just connected the solar array to the batteries. It worked. But then I had a few outings and noticed that my freezer and fridge kept getting toggled off. None of the batteries ever dipped below 40%, all of them are yellow integrity and above. Reading internet discussions, I've come to the conclusion that the appliances "run out" of power when the batteries leave the reality bubble and thus stop supplying power while the appliances are still in range of the bubble. So I figured I'd rearrange my entire room: place a battery in each corner and put the appliances in the middle. But I cannot properly connect the batteries to each other so that their capacities in the power grid would get added, for some reason. For example, say I have two batteries some distance from each other. I connect some appliances to one of them. The appliances show as drawing power from that battery. Now I connect the batteries to each other using a cord. Now inspecting both batteries shows the appliance power draw. But their capacities both show 50k. If I place them right next to each other, it is the expected 100k.
I have also tried using the house wiring. Half the room's walls don't have wiring, but I tested on one wall which did, and it didn't work. I also tried it this way: connected the batteries to the wall wiring, and then connected the wall wirings directly using a cord. Same behavior: the input from the solar cells and the power draw from appliances is correct, so there IS a connection, but the capacities are still shown as 50k when the number should be 100k for two batteries. Any ideas?

The elements from traditional roguelikes that can be made palatable to a wider audience are what you see in roguelites. A lot of popular games already have a "roguelike" mode by which they usually mean a separate game mode with procgen maps, pick 3 things gameplay, and run based meta-progression. Traditional roguelikes are too harsh and you can't sell like a SSR Nethack class with busted features without fucking up the whole game. More importantly there's basically nowhere to put social/multiplayer features

There's things like that one gacha that's basically Slay the Spire but even then you can feel how they sit weirdly with each other

monster catchers are quite good for gacha type systems. I feel like visting the velvet room feels like a gacha sometimes.
>>
>>560291902
But it is an extremely common roguelite "patch" to the genre, because most people used to modern games don't like feeling that they completely wasted their time on a run they lost, hence why a bunch of roguelites have you slowly unlock the full content of the game
>>
>>560292483
Can you name a major roguelike that has it? None of the classics do, it originates in modern roguelites. As this guy says: >>560293102
>>
>>560293437
TOME lets you unlock classes and races. I quite like that about it. current cata dda experimentals also have certain starts locked behind getting achievements.

>>
>>560294252

>>
>>560290064
You could make the gacha rolls be for starting characters. Like the free character gets to pick race and a starter class, while a common might be be a specific race/class with a decent bonus item or something, and the SSR is a big titty cat girl who starts with an advanced class from level 1 (imagine the game has class branching as part of leveling) and at least one item that would define a run if you found it on the floor. These characters would be consumable, if you die you lose a stock of it; you might make the higher rarity characters come with multiple stocks, while lower rarity ones are single use.

This creates a system where whales can pig out to "Reduce variance" while the remaining 99% of the playerbase can enjoy relatively cheap pulls (since they're all consumable) and a functional roguelike.

As for the social/multiplayer features, ghosts could be one way of doing it, if you get a reward for every time your ghost kills a player. It would especially please the piggies every time one of their dead waifus makes a wagie seethe for ending the run... but it might also make piggy mad to die to an early ghost. You could alternatively just do what dcss servers do and have ranked leader-boards where different completion stats are measured, which paypiggies will naturally have an advantage in to justify their spending.

The only truly difficult part of making a roguelike gacha is finding a way to make sure enough fanservice is on screen at any given time.

final fantasy roguelike but using the brave/HP system from dissidia ( and its opera omnia gacha which was a turn based game instead of a fighter) as a core mechanic, possibly with both brave and faith + HP, for compelling single unit combat.

Just a good ass fantasy game - hopefully something with a more interesting dungeon. Too many empty dungeon rooms where the place u stand does not matter much. Lot of modern TTRPGs have 'end your turn next to a wall, wall run two spaces' type mechanics that feel good.
>>
>>560294605

This is a NPC that turnt hostile without me realizing it.
I tried looking up the "Fucking wet sandwich!" phrase and found nothing.
Why does this happen?
>>

I think wet sandwhich is just a randomly generated hostile NPC bark
>>
>>560325329
nope,
I was minding my own business killing a screecher, but it was far away.
then when I came back he was hostile.
I think this happened again last night on a different game, when I butchered a demihuman (cracken)
I happened to butcher a cracken before that fight.
could this be it?
>>
>>560326146
did you ever get close? NPCs sometimes just start hostile, but don't show it until you get within a certain range of them

>>
>>560327850
I started the game in an evac shelter and the retard was there too.
I've been using the evac shelter for almost 2 weeks ingame itme and he was OK.
as I said above, I was killing a few zombies and then butchered a cracken and then 2 screens away I went to kill a screetcher and saw the retard that was hostile and "attacking to kill" while he was alone in the shelter.
I have no idea what happened.
Anyway I hit him a few times with my spear and he said "lucky or me I did my cardio" and ran away.

I've been experimenting with NPCs this playthrough, it's a lot of fun to speedrun various mutation lines and bionic installations now that I don't need to grind through the entire rest of the game just to try a new mutation line
they're surprisingly good at using the various activatable endgame armors (power armor and RM13), but they really just do not understand how to draw weapons from holsters and scabbards, which is my biggest pain point with them right now

Does anyone know how fatigue works in cata? Not physical strain, but the need to sleep. Given that you're on a timer with zombie evolution, I'd like to reduce the amount of time wasted sleeping. My current character rarely gets injured due to high dodge despite fighting in melee all day, so I rarely need the increased healing speed.
CAN time be wasted on sleep, if you sleep naturally? I know you can stave off sleeping with "stimulant" effects, but that doesn't treat built up sleep deprivation, right? I've had a few days of staying up for about 6 hours past the appearance of the "Tired" status, and it feels like it starts appearing quicker than usual now.
Looking at the JSON of things like tea, it lists two effects: "stim" and "fatigue_mod". I'm assuming stim is the stimulant/downer stack. I'm not sure what either effects actually do. Well, stimulants increase your speed a bit and make falling asleep harder, but is that all? Can't even begin to guess what "fatigue_mod" does.
Am I overthinking this? Should I just sleep without an alarm set and it'll naturally optimize itself?
Also, I randomly found a putrid heart on the floor in a wasp-infested radio tower. Is mutating worth it? My character would probably not want to since they're an "unwilling mutant". But if it's really a super rare spawn, I'm not sure if I'm missing out.

time cannot be wasted on sleeping
you can waste time failing to fall asleep due to having insomniac or low quality bedding
build a real bed and have a body pillow or fur sleeping bag or snuggie and don't try to sleep until you're actually tired (not dead tired, tired gives you penalties to learning so it's good to go to sleep immediately upon getting it)
deviate from this only in order to keep yourself from sleeping during the daylight hours, which is a major bummer if you don't have crazy lighting and power storage going already
you can make yourself more tired via physical exertion as well, chopping trees or mining rocks will rapidly make you sleepy

I see, so I shouldn't try to chug tea or coffee instead of water throughout the day in an effort to avoid the "Tired" effect. No way around it without special traits I guess. I already have power and stuff going, so I don't really care if it's night or day. I even found a pair of infrared goggles so I can estimate danger and fight at night a lot better now. I try to roleplay a bit and I'm not sure if someone who was experimented upon ("unwilling mutant" profession) would want to mutate more, so if it's not that cool I won't be missing much sticking to that. Thanks, it's hard to find up-to-date info sometimes, even the wiki with the version selection has things you apparently can't look up.

I was clearing a way past a town in cata. There was a cave on the outskirts, with a ramp going down inside the rock walls. There was a regular "piercing wail" emitted from the depths, so I went to check it out. The ramp was blocked by a cougar standing on the level below, so I "forced my way past it" and killed it. I didn't turn on the flashlight but I had infrared goggles, and it showed about 30-40 mostly tiny figures down there. They were bats, and they gathered around a small cross shaped light source, that apparently had nothing in the center. Not all of them were bats though, there was also a slightly damaged black bear, and a giant stag beetle larva. Probably other things. I was trying to kill as many critters as I could, and then started going low on stamina because the bats had high dodge and took many swings to hit, so I stepped out to take a breather. When I tried to go back down, I wasn't able to force my way past anymore because the bats surrounded the ramp. I have a jackhammer in my car and I'm gonna be driving past there soon. What could have been emitting the "piercing wail"s? Is it worth trying to dig my way back in to check out what it was?

True, but I don't want to confuse the guy further.

Basically if you don't enable circular distances, then you and mobs can both travel farther in a given period of time by going diagonally, which is a buff or penalty depending on who's doing what.
But since mobs outnumber you, then it's usually going to go in their favor as a crowd of enemies around you will get more opportunities to move diagonally to close with you than you get to move diagonally to run away.
>>
>>560483162
busier spaces can also just include floor tiles effecting the game more, ala 4x or fire emblem. I think they work better in games where you move more than one time per turn of which there are not enough of ( does any game do this except demon?)

>>560494374
There's no fucking geometry, the goddamn game is made up of squares. Imagine you are standing in a field IRL. Now if the field is magically made up of tiles, yes, it would take less total time to go from one side to the other if you were going diagonally because you are moving across both x and y axis at the same time. But IRL you aren't locked to tiles, it doesn't take you longer to walk across the field because you are moving fucking northwest versus west. Making it cost more in game time to move diagonally is retarded and feels like absolute shit in practice, whenever kiting you have to move horizontally to get away from shit faster, it's ridiculous. I can't think of a single other game that does this shit.
>>

>>
>>560494973
It doesn't matter if it distorts distances, being anal about that in a grid based game to the extent that you make it play worse (by making diagonals take more time) is fucking retarded. It makes zero practical sense that my dude fleeing from a zombie takes more time running southwest than he would running west.

Even if diagonals technically involve moving more distance on a square grid, it won't help you catch up to someone who is moving only in cardinal directions. He runs north, you run northwest. He runs north again, and you have to run northeast to track him. Now you're both two squares north of where you started.

Yes, we know. The diagonal is the square root of 2. Now if someone is moving away from you in a cardinal direction, how do you propose to catch them moving 1 square at a time? At best you could cut them off by moving diagonally toward a space ahead of their direction of travel.
>>
"We know" says only person who doesn't know, calmly.
>>
>>560497439
I'm just pointing out that measuring "speed" and "distance" in this way isn't helpful. The game has its own logic where that distance is equal, because its divided into a perfectly spaced grid instead of continuous space. Real world physics don't always apply to video games. You might as well be using facts and logic to argue that video game characters shouldn't be able to double jump. It's convenient and feels good for the players to be able to double jump, so game designers keep implementing double jump in their games. It's convenient and feels good for the players to be able to move diagonally at the same action cost as moving in a cardinal direction, so game designers keep implementing that feature in their games. The real world logic is not as important as making a good video game.
>>
It's also interesting that various physics engines have run into this same problem in 3D games. If the W button makes you move at speed X forward and the D button makes you move at speed X to the right, then you can press both buttons and aim your camera 45 degrees away from your intended direction of travel. This doesn't happen in roguelikes because you can't rotate the grid to move "faster" in any direction you like. The grid is constant.
>>

>Let's remove the "spatial distortion" by making a diagonal distance (distance = 1.41421356237 tiles) equal to 2 tiles of distance instead of 1 tile of distance
You actually ended up less correct than the simplest implementation.

>>560500249
I was under the impression that it increased movecost values by x1.414 or so for diagonal movement, so it's not double, it's closer to correct
the problem is that this leads to degenerate behavior when attempting to run away from things across diagonals, which is bad for gameplay
>>
>>560500807
Well, you can ignore it, which is fine, you can wait for the devs to implement a mathematical fix, which is also fine, or you can sperg like an idiot about how the fix will "make the game worse" because you're dumb, which would be entertaining if somebody wasn't doing it already

Here's an experiment for you: Find an empty street in Cata, spawn a row of enemies on either sidewalk with youself in the center of the road. Save and back it up, then try to run down the middle of the street between them, with and without circular distances on, and see how soon they close in on you each way.

Without circular distances, they get to cheat and move farther on the diagonal, meaning they'll close in on you faster, taking advantage of your need to move in a straight line down the street.

>>560501972
yeah, because they're physically closer to you in that case
I prefer it that way
consider this case: our @ moves away from the dragon diagonally
in roughly half of the times he does this, the Dragon will be able to both follow along with the @ AND get a free attack off

I personally don't find this fun, so I play with squareLOS
>>
>>560502267
Yes, in that specific case you can exploit the extra speed to get away faster, but enemies can do the same to you, which means in a 1v1 situation it's normally a wash, with both of you getting the same advantage/disadvantage depending on setup.

But in a 1vMany, like the street experiment above that you're skimming over, every single one of the enemies gets to take that advantage over you, on every turn, which means they will pour into the center of the street faster than with circular distances.
That's why square is actually a worse setup for you, because you're normally facing large numbers of enemies coming from several directions, while rarely do you have a bunch of NPCs chasing a single enemy.
>>
>>560502635
don't run down the middle of the road unless you're an absolute roadrunner??? running down the middle of the road is ALWAYS suboptimal in Cataclysm, with or without circleLOS because you're giving up your greatest advantage: the ability to choose the terrain in order to bait zombies into things that will slow them down, like bushes, windows and walls
run diagonally towards a house and go around it, which grants me an advantage because I'm using movecost 100 diagonal movement instead of movecost 141 diagonals
>>
>>560502763
That's dodging the zombies, but also dodging the point, anon. Running down the middle of the road to escape the zeds on either side is the best way for you to actually see the difference.

You're giving them an unfair advantage over you by selecting the square movement radius. That's fine if you actually wanted do that, but you should know what you're doing isn't just making things easier for you, based on the 1v1 situation you've thought about.

your arguement is that one of the most ancient genres of video games should reflect real world physics. Are you correct in the mathmatical sense? Yes. addendum: I chose to engage with your contrived scenario because you asked me to, because I am a nice person who is simply wrong, which is not a crime
also bright nights is easy enough as it is, I don't need to be splitting hairs trying to give myself more advantages and just choose the one that I find more enjoyable to play, which is the one that has less degenerate micro behavior

we have the cordellion action economy that was added to dnd 3.5 in the first or second supplement - this action economy is so good that DnD still uses it and even Matsuno the tactics ogre/ fft guy has used it ( though he made swift actions cost a small amount of charge time and also TP. I think the reason that circularlos trips so many people up is that it inherently creates a disconnect from what you are seeing and what is being simulated when it's used on a square grid based game. A diagonal tile is the exact same visual size as a horizontal or vertical one, but in practice it's supposed to represent a larger part of space. The slower movement in CDDA is just a way to convey this in a functional, but obtuse and annoying manner.

Good news for people who hate it though: there's a modder experimenting with unsnapping movement from the grid. Couple that with the real time functionality that got added a while back and CDDA might actually not belong in this general anymore at all.

>>
>>560546045

I'll elaborate further.
A design choice like this is a hit to a Drakeform build I was trying to make. I want to farm self-damage in batform, and then transform into Drakeform for the grand finale.
>can't attack and cash in on the massive fire damage I've earned
>can't stand ground and cash in on the massive armor and block
So I just get to do UNO prayer 2 usage and just hope it's a nuclear bomb that kills Colored One? Not happening.
>>
>>560547880
Drakeform is hard as hell to farm stacks for. The only reliable setup I found is Sparkform to literally buy armor/block/fire damage for 5 skill points a pop.

>diagonal moves in square grid are longer
anon, I KNOW, I'm saying that visually in the game you are still seeing a single tile, identical to vertical and horizontal ones, representing that longer distance. It's confusing because visually they look 1:1, but in practice they aren't.
>>
>>560551060
Anon, you are measuring distance in continuous space. There is no such thing as continuous space in a grid-based roguelike. You're hallucinating real world physics in a video game where real world physics don't exist. One tile is one tile.
>>
>>560541050

>>
>>560546297
how the fuck is shit like melee supposed to work in something like this?
>>
>>560551425
it doesnt matter whether the smallest discrete unit of space is a tile or planck length
diagonals through rectangles are still longer
the same applies in any euclidean space which most ragulicks use
>>
>>560551813
Roguelikes where you can move diagonally in one turn take place in non-Euclidean space. Get over it. It's better that way.
>>
>>560551642
By abusing game mechanics
>>
>>560551994
Unless you make diagonal moves take longer to compensate for trying to approximate Euclidean space in a square grid.
>>
>>560551994
they dont though
they obey all the ground rules of euclidean geometry
because of this you can exploit the bugged diagonal movement speed in countless tile-based game from retro jay-arrpeegees to ragulicks
>>
>>560552445
It's not bugged if that is the intended behavior. The default assumption is that one move takes one turn. If you make a player take two turns to move diagonal and they get owned by an enemy whacking them for twice as long to satisfy your trigonometry fetish, they are going to leave and go play DCSS instead.
>>
>>560500807
Euclidean spaces are overrated. Our gravitational frame of reference (Earth) is non-Euclidean. If you move forward in a straight line for long enough, you'll end up where you started. Wild! Someone do something about this bullshit.
>>
The real sin isn't diagonal movement, it's diagonal movement through corners.
>>
>>560549613
Yes, but the opposite is also true, where the extra move cost for the enemy will prevent him from getting an attack where he otherwise would
>>
>>560561126
But does it prioritize your move first before their attack?
>move cost is 100
>moving diagonally is 142
>zombie can act every 120
It seems to me that moving diagonally with circular distances enabled is a nonsensical handicap in gameplay, because in this scenario moving vertically away forces him to chase instead of attacking, while diagonally would result in me getting smacked before moving away and creating a tile of distance between us, unless I'm not understanding it.
>>
>>560561493
yes, kiting diagonally is slower so you will likely eat more hits moving that way, but it also means a zombie that you force to walk towards you diagonally is wasting more of his turn

its annoying because it basically turns the game into a meta where you pretend every diagonal movement is a table or something that slows you down
>>
diagonals are actually straights from a diffrent angle so this is all gay
>>
