Larijani’s message to Muslim world voices dismay, warnings and assurances
Iran’s security chief has issued a six-point message to Muslim-majority nations aiming to spell out Tehran’s position and re-assert it’s not going to relent in the fight against the US and Israel.
Ali Larijani tried to appeal to a religious sense of duty for Muslims to stand together, saying with few exceptions Islamic countries have failed to support Iran against what he called “treacherous aggression”.
“Is the stance of certain Islamic governments not at odds with the Prophet’s [Mohammad] saying: ‘Whoever hears a man calling out, ‘O Muslims!’ and fails to answer him is not a Muslim’?”
He went on to justify Iran’s attacks across the region, which countries in the Gulf have described as a blatant aggression against their sovereignty, appearing to warn there is no middle ground in the ongoing confrontation.
“Which side are you on?” Larijani asked. He followed his thinly veiled warning by emphasising Iran is not seeking domination over its neighbours.
“The unity of the Islamic nation, if realised with full strength, is capable of guaranteeing security, progress, and independence for all its states,” Larijani said.
The message appears to make the case that the US military presence in the Middle East should be replaced by regional cooperation to ensure collective security. The argument was made as Iranian missiles and drones continue to fly across the region daily, targeting countries that host US bases but stress they are not involved in the war.

Military operations can neutralise Iran’s ‘shore-based threats’
Concerns over Iran fully closing the Strait of Hormuz remain high, but the US and its allied forces see ways to maintain the vital waterway, an analyst says.
Joseph Votel, a distinguished military fellow at the Middle East Institute, former four-star general and commander of US Central Command, said that while threats from missiles and mines exist, international cooperation can safeguard shipping lanes, even as a focus remains on neutralising Iran’s broader military capabilities.
“The United States or international partners may assist with minesweepers to ensure waterways are free of mines. Continued military operations also help ensure shore-based threats can’t target shipping moving through the straits,” he told Al Jazeera. “There is a way to do this, but right now, the focus is on the campaign against capabilities within Iran.”
Iran’s determination to preserve its military means the campaign will take time, but the US is prioritising both immediate and strategic objectives, Votel said.
“While we are aware of the threat in the straits, our priority is targeting capabilities on the ground. It takes time to deploy resources for both. President Donald Trump has asked for international assistance to keep the strait open and allow the flow of oil and natural gas.”

Iran army directs message to Trump ahead White House press conference
The Iranian armed forces spokesperson, Ebrahim Zolfaghari, has issued a message in English directed at President Trump as he prepares for an impromptu press conference at the White House.
Trump’s briefing comes amid tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where the US has pressed NATO, Asian nations, and other allies to help escort shipping through the effectively closed waterway.
The Trump administration’s timeline for restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains unclear to both the American public and US allies, many of whom have already said they will not be sending ships.
In a social media post, the US president pressured seven countries – including the UK, France, and even China.
But so far, there have been firm “no’s” from Japan and Australia, hesitation from others, and complete disregard from China. The upcoming press conference may be used to escalate this pressure campaign further, with the president suggesting those relying on the strait for oil imports should take responsibility for defending it.

US oil contract WTI falls 5% on Strait of Hormuz hopes
Oil prices have slid on expectations more vessels could pass through the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
The main US oil contract, WTI, slumped by more than 5 percent to $93.37 per barrel, while international benchmark Brent North Sea crude fell more than 2 percent to $100.28 per barrel.
Monitor Marine Traffic said a Pakistani oil tanker transited on Monday through the strait with its automatic transponder system activated.
About 20 percent of the world’s oil passes through the strategic waterway, which has been brought to a near standstill by the US-Israel war on Iran.

IEA members could release more oil stocks ‘as and if needed’: Agency chief
All 32 member countries of the International Energy Agency could release more emergency oil stocks later “as and if needed”, Executive Director Fatih Birol has said.
According to Birol, the countries will still be over 1.4 billion barrels remaining in their emergency oil stocks despite the largest release of reserves in history already agreed.
“We still have a lot of stocks left. This current stock release, once it is completed, will reduce the emergency stocks in IEA countries only by around 20 percent,” Birol said in a video statement.
Individual countries have also pledged to release reserves, including the US and Japan.
European countries have collectively pledged to release 107.5 million barrels.
Iran’s blockade on the Strait of Hormuz has sent oil prices soaring, risking a global economic crisis.

Pope Leo urges journalists to report on war ‘through eyes of victims’
Pope Leo has called on journalists to report on war through the eyes of its victims, pointing out the responsibility of the press to ensure information does not become a source of false narratives.
“In the dramatic circumstances of war, information must guard against the risk of turning into propaganda,” the head of the Catholic churtch wrote on X.
The pope added that journalists have a duty to verify information carefully so as not to become a mouthpiece for those in power. “They must show the suffering that war always brings to populations, which entails showing the face of war and recounting it through the eyes of victims,” he said.

Ships remain stranded as Strait of Hormuz sees minimal traffic
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed sharply, with dozens, possibly hundreds, of vessels waiting near its entrances as tensions disrupt one of the world’s most vital energy routes.
Journalist Inzamam Rashid, reporting from near the strait, said the waterway, which normally carries about a fifth of the world’s oil supply, is seeing only a fraction of its usual traffic.
“What we have seen, in fact, is boats and vessels being targeted by Iran, those who attempt to pass through, but also those that are not affiliated with the US and its allies,” Rashid said.
“Just the other day, we saw a Thai-flagged carrier being targeted by an Iranian ballistic missile. That meant that 20 of the crew members there had to be rescued, and three of them are still missing at sea.”

Trump says he’s sparing infrastructure in Iran
Trump claims that the US is trying to avoid causing extensive damage to Iran’s infrastructure.
“I left a lot of infrastructure in Tehran because if you did it, it’s years of building,” Trump said during a phone interview with PBS.
“I could knock out the electric plants in one hour … but if I do that, that’s years of rebuilding and it’s trauma. So I’m trying to hold off on that kind of thing.”
Iran had threatened to plunge the entire region into darkness if its electric grid is attacked.
Trump also said that US forces did not strike oil pipes when it attacked Kharg island a few days ago.
“Kharg Island is out of commission except for the pipes, which I left. I didn’t want to hit the pipes because, you know, it’s years of work to put them together,” said Trump.
Iranian authorities say US and Israeli strikes are causing extensive damage to civilian sites, including residential buildings, schools and hospitals.

Larijani to Muslim nations: ‘Which side are you on?’
Iran’s security chief Ali Larijani has issued a message to the Muslim world saying that Iran remains “steadfast” in its fight against the US and Israel.
Larijani voiced disappointment with what he described as lack of support from Muslim-majority countries when Iran came under attack.
“Some nations have gone even further, declaring Iran to be their adversary simply because it targeted American bases – as well as American and Israeli interests – situated within their own territories,” Larijani said.
While Iran stresses that it is only striking US interests in the Middle East, its drones and missiles have targeted civilian sites, including hotels and energy installment in the Gulf region.
Larijani said Iran cannot be “expected to stand idly by with its hands tied” while US bases are located in neighbouring countries.
“The confrontation today is, in reality, between America and Israel on one side, and Muslim Iran and the forces of resistance on the other. Which side are you on, then?” the Iranian official said.
Larijani called for Muslim unity, stressing that Iran does not seek “hegemony” over the region.
“You know full well that America has no loyalty, and that Israel is, in fact, your enemy,” he said.

Israel is bracing itself, not for de-escalation but for more weeks of war
We have seen another Iranian missile attack targeting the central area of Israel, really focusing on Ashkelon, and areas west and southwest of Jerusalem.
This includes Bet Shemesh. We keep hearing about that location. There are several air bases and strategic assets near that town.
We saw damage today in Rishon LeZion and other areas in the broader Tel Aviv area, and we also saw some impact sites in the upper Galilee.
So, really, damage is being reported all across Israel.
Now, doctors and medical staff are being told by authorities that they must not leave the country, one more indication, rather, that Israel is bracing itself, not for de-escalation but rather for more weeks of war, as we’ve been hearing from military figures and military sources.

Tehran believes it has more ‘cards to play’
Iran believes it has more “cards to play, if not to win this war, to end it on their terms”, Hamidreza Azizi, a visiting fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, has told Al Jazeera.
Azizi said that in 2018, then-President Hassan Rouhani said Iran does “not just have one strait”, adding that this was interpreted as a reference to the simultaneous closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
Now, Iran has been referring to the two straits again, indicating that it might ask the Houthis to threaten the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
“At the same time, I can see a growing concern in Iran about the potential, of at least a limited ground invasion by the US… to take control of Iran’s Kharg island, and what they [Iran] are signaling is that if that happens… because that’s essential to Iran’s oil exports, then all the oil facilities around the region will be a target.”

Strait of Hormuz: Which countries’ ships has Iran allowed safe passage to?
During the US-Israeli war on Iran, Tehran has said the Strait of Hormuz is open to all except the US and its allies.
One-fifth of the world’s oil shipments transit through the strait.
On March 2, Ebrahim Jabari, a senior adviser to the IRGC commander-in-chief announced that the strait was “closed” and if any vessels tried to cross it, the IRGC and the navy would “set those ships ablaze”.
The move sent oil prices soaring above $100 per barrel from a pre-war price of about $65.

Israel says it has plans for at least three more weeks of Iran war
Israeli military spokesperson Nadav Shoshani has told reporters there are detailed operational plans for the war with Iran for the next three weeks along with additional plans extending further.
The military has framed its aims as limited to weakening Iran’s capacity to threaten Israel by striking its ballistic missile infrastructure, nuclear facilities and security apparatus.
“We want to make sure that they are as weak as possible, this regime, and that we degrade all their capabilities, all parts and all wings of their security establishment,” Lieutenant Colonel Shoshani said.
The military said it still has thousands of targets to hit inside Iran.
Last week, Trump said there was “practically nothing left” to target in Iran.

Israel uses occupation as negotiating tool in Lebanon, analysts say
Above the smouldering skyline of Beirut’s southern suburbs of Dahiyeh, new forced evacuation orders from the Israeli military echo through rapidly emptying neighbourhoods.
The Israeli warnings, accompanied by bombings of Beirut and southern Lebanon, contrast starkly with a French proposal for a diplomatic intervention aimed at pausing the latest Israeli war on its northern neighbour.
But increasingly, some analysts said, that apparent dissonance between Israel’s actions and the prospect of talks to stop the fighting is in fact a reflection of a new reality on the ground that Israel is creating: occupying Lebanese territory to give itself greater leverage in any negotiations.
