For the Summer Games, athletes representing Finland first competed at the Games of the IV Olympiad London 1908, taking part in the sports or disciplines of artistic gymnastics, athletics, diving, shooting, swimming and wrestling. At the Games of the IV Olympiad London 1908, the first athletes representing Finland to win Olympic medals did so on the same day, capturing a bronze in the men’s athletics discus throw event as well as a bronze in the men’s artistic gymnastics team event. At the same edition of the Games, Werner Weckman became the first athlete representing Finland to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s wrestling Greco-Roman light-heavyweight event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Finland first competed at the I Olympic Winter Games Chamonix 1924, taking part in the sports or disciplines of cross country skiing, figure skating, military patrol, Nordic combined, ski jumping, and speed skating. At the I Olympic Winter Games Chamonix 1924, Clas Thunberg became the first athlete representing Finland to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing a bronze in the men’s speed skating 500 metres event. On the same day Thunberg became the first athlete representing Finland to win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the men’s speed skating 5,000 metres event.

At Beijing 2022, Finland took home two gold among eight total medals, which was the most golds the NOC had won since Salt Lake City 2002 and its most total medals since Turin 2006. Cross-country skier Iivo Niskanen won Finland's first gold after triumphing in the men's 15km Classic event, becoming the fourth Finnish cross-country skier to win three career Olympic gold medals. Niskanen also took home a silver and a bronze from Beijing. Finland's second gold in Beijing came via the men's ice hockey tournament. Having finished runners-up at the 1988 and 2006 Games, it was third time lucky for the Finnish men's team in Beijing, where they came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat ROC 2-1 and claim a first ever ice hockey gold medal. The Finnish women's ice hockey team also took home a medal from Beijing, successfully defending their 2018 bronze medal to claim their fourth bronze since the women's tournament began in 1998. Finland's women's team included 16-year-old Sanni Vanhanen, who was the second-youngest athlete from any NOC to win a medal in Beijing. Finland's six other medals in Beijing were all won in cross-country skiing, with Kerttu Niskanen (Iivo Niskanen's sister) the only athlete besides her brother to win more than one medal.
