Doumani steps to ring

Producer to helm female boxing pic

MILAN — Lorenzo Doumani, who co-produced “The Cotton Club,” will shift into helming with an uppercut to the female boxing industry called “Knockout” from his own DMG Entertainment, the company announced Monday.

Pic, which DMG said is in pre-production, follows docu-style the rise of a female Latino fighter in the newfound world of women’s boxing. Doumani and producer Simone Sheffield are still searching for a lead with plans to start principal shooting in late November in Las Vegas, New Orleans and East L.A.

Not inked yet

DMG has also made offers to boxers Muhammad Ali, Oscar de la Hoya, Thomas Hearns and several women boxers to make cameos. But no deals have been inked yet.

Pic is scripted by Mark Stevens. Katy Wallin is a co-producer.

DMG, which Doumani founded in January, just finished principal photography on “Blatella,” a sci-fi thriller with Randy Quaid, Katherine Heigl, Julie Brown and original “Star Trek” vets James Doohan and George Takei. DMG said the pic, due out in spring 1998, is part of a $100 million production slate that also includes a sequel and a music industry project called “Rock Star.” Company is also developing a one-hour TV skein, “The Cotton Club Chronicles.”

Vincent Petrillo, formerly an exec with Live Entertainment, is handling the international for DMG.
