The 11's on the backs of the photos could just be covering up information with a marker. I remember getting pictures developed and there would usually be a couple printed lines on the back which included date, location, maybe even time.

Old school metadata.

[–]CalibineRiviere 15 points16 points  (0 children)

that’s brilliant actually

[–]Tarledsa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Often filename

[–]PeaLouise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you can see an extra, darker line the middle of the two thick black lines too.

[–]chunkysmalls42098 78 points79 points  (3 children)

Hey dude I just came across this and have a trick for seeing what's underneath the "11" marked on the back of photos

If you lick your thumb and dip it in sugar and rub the marker lines it may come off

I learned this because the courthouse in my small town would redact paperwork with permanent marker and that was how we got it off

[–]patchlanders 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Ummm, wait what? Why?

[–]chunkysmalls42098 7 points8 points  (1 child)

So you can know who ratted who out lol

[–]patchlanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LOL okay not gonna argue that logic.

[–]mendenlol 50 points51 points  (3 children)

Well I live near the Hiwassee River so I'll keep an ear/eye out. It's not usually very deep so bright red would have definitely stood out to someone by now. It's weird but does kind of have a "kid wrote this" vibe.

[–]brittleknight[S] 19 points20 points  (2 children)

Thanks! Hope its just a kid, prank or something less nightmare fuel based.

[–]mendenlol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hope so too because hard agree about the nightmare fuel

[–]MadameWeb 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Hiiiiii I know this is an old thread but I just posted on r/weird https://www.reddit.com/r/Weird/s/hj8RcQJvrY With the SAME THING but different location. My friend got this at the store he works at with almost the same things. Very very bizarre ??

Commenting to boost this. Would love to have some sort of resolution to this lol it's gonna keep me up at night even though it will probably turn out to be completely meaningless.

[–]scooby6304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same

[–]yango_mango 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Seems like a cyrptic way to word that a girl Sarah was killed on the river wearing those goggles and thrown downstream. Maybe she was followed from Target and the car is hers. Its common for a killer to make things like this for attention to amplify the risk of them being caught.

Please take that all with a grain of salt—just pitching my idea.

[–]Active_Wafer9132 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Since multiple Targets have received these with different person and river names, I'm wondering if perhaps you are correct and this is a serial killer. Also the same car is in each letter so maybe the car belongs to the killer.

[–]OK_Salamand3r 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would piggyback this and say the car belongs or belonged to the killer - it’s obviously important to him in some way. I’m thinking summer camps, swim schools, etc, that may use those glasses in bulk. So he’s not buying them and giving them insidiously to the girls, but he’s working with girls at a place that uses this brand from Target.

I also agree that the letter sounds and feels like it’s hiding patterns or could be decoded.

[–]CalibineRiviere 31 points32 points  (8 children)

I’ve used to study ciphers and the letter definitely reads like a text that has been altered to forcibly fit a pattern. Def something fishy here. Could be something as simple as an r/ARG tho! I would ask there as well if they think it’s an ARG. If it isn’t, then it looks like something more sinister.

Unless it’s a school project like other people suggested. Although I doubt it would be mailed to strangers with no explanation.

People are saying this is an AI generated letter: I WHOLE HEARTEDLY doubt it, although there’s always a possibility it’s fake/printed, etc, have you seen AI try to write?

[–]CalibineRiviere 16 points17 points  (3 children)

I’d also post it in r/ciphers r/cipher r/cryptography and r/codes to see if anyone finds anything strange. In cases like this though, the one most likely to recognize anything of importance is your friend. It was mailed to him, after all

[–]CalibineRiviere 3 points4 points  (2 children)

please let us know of any developments, OP! I’m invested lol

[–]laladybee 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Another one has been sent to someone else....

[–]CalibineRiviere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yo omg

[–]brittleknight[S] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

The reason people are saying its Ai is because of looking at my post history and all the things I follow.. i assure you its not Ai. I use Midjourney as kind of a therapy and distraction.. same with video games and movies. I hope people would be more open minded than to judge me on that and think this is some sort of hoax. Its 100% real and has been reported to the police.

[–]iamtwatwaffle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey OP there’s a new case of this on reddit in r/weird

[–]CalibineRiviere 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I saw your post history (cute dog!) but yeah this isn’t AI.

[–]brittleknight[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If ya mean the zombie dog stuff.. I played a mobile game when I lived in canada called zombi jombi (spelling) and have been trying to make my own version ever since lol. Its a side hobby :)

[–]Valuable-Broccoli728 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Why is only “Ashley” paddling “across” while the rest are paddling “down”.

[–]heaz247 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I think it's because Ashley is paddling across a lake, and the others are paddling down river, which is typically what one would do in a kayak. I.e. you can't paddle down a lake.

[–]Vegetable-Lock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So its not an english language learner because they understand nuances in grammar.

[–]brittleknight[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Think I figured out how to link a photo. Hope this works.photo of letter and pictures and envelope

Adding another photo second photo with back of photos eleven?

[–]Fragrant_Pumpkin_471 32 points33 points  (6 children)

Is this some sort of weird school writing project where they are practicing printing and addressing letters maybe?

[–]brittleknight[S] 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Thats brilliant.. maybe? It is some interesting print style they have. I would sleep easier with this being a possibility. Thanks for that!

[–]Fragrant_Pumpkin_471 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Yeah to me the printing looks very late elementary/middle school female. I wonder if there’s a sub for handwriting analysis that could help you identify an age/gender (I’m fairly new to Reddit so not sure!)

[–]miltonwadd 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Looks more like someone trying to write in very uniform way to disguise their own writing to me.

Sincerely,

Santa & The Toothfairy.

[–]brittleknight[S] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Only thing is.. why highlight and send photos?

[–]Kindly_Seat_5584 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this has happened at multiple other targets it's creepy and weird

[–]RolyPolyGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hey not sure if you saw rhis but someone else had this happen https://www.reddit.com/r/Weird/s/wYoliakNEZ

[–]bz237 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Iirc this is not the first time this letter has been mailed out. So it’s likely innocuous. But definitely do some searching for it. It looks familiar.

[–]aavant-gardee 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Hey, what do you mean by this is not the first time this letter has been mailed out?

[–]bz237 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Google it or search Reddit for it

[–]aavant-gardee 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Well I have and I only found the newer one. None before this post.

[–]bz237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw this on Reddit before this post. I do not recall where unfortunately. But at the time I was convinced it was some sort of strange hoax letter.

[–]milkgoddaidan 6 points7 points  (1 child)

pass the photos through a light table - the sharpie ink is pretty transparent under light

the writing looks like it is using a children's writing practice template to form perfect letters that obscure the original sender's writing

could be a drug pickup thing aswell - speedo goggles, name, kayaking etc could all be code for location information. I say this because what would be the point otherwise? This letter is too vague to kick off a murder investigation, so what is the point of the murderer sending it? Unless perhaps putting sending out random mail is their declaration to the world or some imagined power that they have done these acts. Can't decisively say. Any idea why your friend recieved this? Was it sent to them specifically?

Definitely get the cops involved

[–]willywonderbucks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cops don't do anything besides break the law.

[–]Fun_Context9979 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Was the letter correctly addressed to your friend?

[–]brittleknight[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was to the target store.. they worked at.

[–]theheartlesswench 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone else see the ink color change between some sentences? Like "Of mountain dew that are sold in the refrigerated coolers" is darker than "and the delicious bottles of", as an example.

[–]letsgettothebottom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The writing alone reads like a poorly written commercial - the second paragraph is written the same way the imagery/acting in the scene would be described. But the pictures make it weird..

[–]SphentheVegan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are odd capital letters. Maybe it’s a cypher. Also, it seems to be a woman… teenage girls work hard at bubble letters. I’ve never seen make handwriting so legible.

[–]GypsumF18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just gibberish. The police all over the world see loads of letters, emails, and calls which are similarly nonsensical and irrelevant, so they wouldn't give this any special attention. Some people just have minds which work in strange ways and become fixated on strange things or ideas. There is absolutely nothing here to suggest any reason for concern.
