o7 Good to hear EVE still strong. I played so much in the past, I loved that game, the lore and all around... but after more than 10 years in, I left it years ago. Sadly, the game was more a side-job than a place to have fun.
Not to be TOO pedantic, but before Elite Dangerous got released. But the original Elites weren't online so it wouldn't really have mattered, but it's still a distinction to be made.
As others said, it’s a salute. And it has been established as “o7” with in game voice overs also sometimes saying “oh seven, commander”. Which is good in my opinion because “<o”, while more accurate would be a bit judgemental (“less than oh, commander”), and I have two cats to judge me already.
When I was curious about what that meant in this subreddit, I got condescending responses just because I was in the dark about something that's been around a long time. Glad to see different responses here.
It’s what people think a salute is. A more appropriate salute is o> because saluting so that your arm looks like the number 7 is ridiculous and impossible for normal humans.
As other said, it's a salute. I personally prefer using a capital O, as the hand is closer to the "forehead", making it look more like the real thing: O7
It's a salute. I think it probably originally got popular inEve . The o is the head, and the 7 is a bent arm.
I was surprised to find out that it is pretty popular inff14 too
I usually saw o/ in FF14. Raised fist of "Lets go!" instead of the salute.
I can confirm it originally got popular in EVE Online in 2004. EVE is still going strong btw

P.S.: Does "patch day, no play" still a thing? :D
Yup. Came from Eve Online before Elite Dangerous got released.

We don’t do that second one. Unless you’re imperial, anyway.
It is known..
(I legitimately LOLed at that one.)
o = head
7 = upstretched arm, hand bent to forehead in a saluting motion
Glad I can help for this one, it represents a molecule with 7 Oxygen atoms.

The small letter o represents a person's head, and the seven represents an arm with a hand. It's a salute o7 means salute, greetings, or I salute you.
