Myrient's content has been successfully archived by the Minerva project, as announced in pic related.

Your ROMs aren't going anywhere.

Here's the site: https://minerva-archive.org/

it's currently down as they convert the data into torrents.

99% of torrents aren't being tracked by copyright infringement watchdog groups. Only recent major releases. Don't download shit like Avatar.Way.of.Shit.2024.x265.AXXO.mp4.torrent. No one is looking at rom packs.

You're seeding as you download so you're just as guilty of distribution of copyrighted materials as the pirate.

Torrents have the tendency to die unless they're super popular, and I have personally been sent letters from my isp (nothing happened, I should have framed the letter or something). DDL if you can is usually how I handle things, though I never even used this myrient place so I feel like all this drama is a bit overblown. They're usually 1 to 3 GB although they're on 4GB discs.
If you got a blu ray burner you can burn M Discs with 100 GB of space per disc and cram like 30 onto one disc, and they come in packs of like, 7. It's a bit pricey to get your foot in the door but once you got it, it's not bad for long term storage, doesn't break down like CD/DVD.
>>
>>734770190
most "nointro sets" are fine, but there's also no such thing as a nointro set

nointro is a database, not a set
the database gets updated frequently, a set is not updated and is just a snapshot in time

for what it's worth, there is no such thing as an m-disc that is greater than dvd capacity

What the fuck do these retards have to get to 400 fucking TB. They must have every single file like 10 times duplicated on average.

And why make an archive that just indiscriminately keeps everything like this? So that each of us will then have to go through the effort like I had to, to deduplicate shit and search for the proper version every time? Because some retarded illiterate wants the "Spanish" translation?
There should only be at most 2 versions of any game. The original and the translation to english if original is not english. Exceptionally if there is another version less censored than the original, somehow, keep that. Also exceptionally, re-releases that add something to the game but honestly put that shit in like a separate torrent.
That's it.

They don't. I'm 38, and the guys I went to high school with were always asking me to pirate stuff for them, or to tell them how I pirated something. It was baffling to me, because nobody showed me, I just figured it out. It wasn't hard.

They couldn't do it. Years later I find them all broke and bleeding money into Crunchyroll, Netflix, Spotify, Disney+, Hulu, etc.

If you are so lost in life as to have made it your mission to play a bunch of obscure roms, I hope things get better for you in a much more substantial way. And if you are within viewing distance of a normal life, why would you care? It takes like two afternoons to find and archive your entire childhood and maybe $200/year in total to ensure you always have the data. It's not 2002 anymore, you aren't at risk of losing years of your life to a hard drive failure or never being able to find your favorite game again.

Companies can pay jeets to sit and seed a torrent queue and take note of every IP that connects and file copyright infringement claims directly to ISPs. Direct download via HTTPS is not capable of this unless the domain has already been seized and compromised. DDL is objectively safer.

I imagine the archive site itself would be the sole seeder for all the niche stuff 99% of the time.
It's no worse than being the sole DDL source for those items but for all the popular shit, torrents alleviate a lot of the bandwidth from the archive site so they can "re-distribute" that to those niche ones (cost-wise)
>>
All these issues people have with torrents are primarily a problem for public tracker plebs. With a closed private system, everyone is incentivized to keep things seeding, which ensures most if not all content hosted has a healthy stock of seeders at any given moment. On the off chance something does hit zero seeds a call can be put out and people who answer it and begin seeding it again get rewarded for keeping it alive.

>>
>>734779398
They wouldn't know if you DDL. That's what makes them safe. Torrents are insecure by their nature. A DDL is a secure connection between you and the server you're downloading from. Only your ISP can see that and they aren't going go out of their way to snitch on you to the IP holder and aren't even actively monitoring your traffic like that. A torrent is like an open swap meet where anybody can just show up and there's nothing stopping the cops (IP holder) from just sitting in the parking lot and writing down everyone's license plate (IP) number.

In America the police/legal system wont be involved. They learned pretty early on suing the shit out of grandmas because little Billy downloaded Metallica off of napster was a bad look for them. Instead, IP holders and ISPs basically have an agreement that if the IP holder catches one of the ISP's customers (That's all they can trace your IP address to without some kind of investigation) torrenting something they own, the ISP (who actually know who you are) will agree to discipline the customer and potentially cut them off from the internet if they keep doing it.

The downside is that zoomers are going to get raped by their ISPs because they don't want to pay for a VPN
anyway, a lot of people don't seem to understand that they'll also be seeding the shit they downloaded which means they shouldn't end up being unable to download some obscure shit due to lack of seeders

Anyway, this is better than the entire archive just disappearing because it was too expensive to keep up so all the bitching unwarranted

I don't know if you remember early GBA roms had these annoying intros from the group that pirated/dumped the game. This had been a thing for a while at the time, even old pc games that needed cracks had intros with flashy animations and shit, other earlier consoles than gba and later like the dreamcast had them too, basically everywhere. But early GBA you couldn't escape the rotating intros and flashy stuff.
No intro are simply releases / dumps that don't have any group intros.

No-Intro started during the GBA days around 2006 when "scene" (Day-0) dumpers would add "cracktros" without actually cracking anything. These used to be some of the only versions of the ROMs available in around 2001-2007. The cractro scene started during the early days of cracking Amiga and other old computer games.

>Those faggots are really picky with game versions
They're really not. As long as you avoid pre-patched translation patches and do them yourself you'll virtually always have the correct hash, and for anything you're getting that isn't a hack or a translation patch it's just the No-Intro or Redump dumps of the games.

DS and PSP games use the shitty PAL versions because of "Muh language support" with no way to convert the saves even though they're an American-centered website, anything disc-based is virtually always USA-only unless there's some PAL60 mode or extra content on the PAL releases which are unbelievably rare, and anything cartridge-based is nearly always leaning towards USA versions over PAL ones unless the PAL ones were the only region it was released in. With the Wii games you have to check their supported hashes because a good chunk of them require the shitty PAL versions for the "Muh language support" reason and since 50hz isn't as much of an issue anymore they don't care.
>>
>>734848193

Youngest millennials are probably the most baseline "Competent" because computers hit the sweet spot of accessible, in most homes, and also just enough power for the user to experiment and explore, and just enough that you had to "Learn" how to use a computer to use it, rather than everything being a one touch app. A lot of the basics became second nature and knowing some of the deeper stuff was common in order to make things work or adjust things or just stuff like zipping files.

I'd say 1990 to 1997 was probably the best years to be born in, being ~10 to 4 when XP launched meant you had basically the best OS for learning.
>>
>>734848872

Emuparadise is still there but it has filters to keep people and lawyers out and that greatly reduces the bandwidth demands. Really it's the only way to go for static sites.

Myrient is organized and validated really well. That's the only reason it had any value.

As fucked as if there's something obscure with zero centralized servers.

I mean, pleasuredome is still around even if it's just one guy posting magnet links to github. Which is frankly all it ever needed to be.

You're not poor are you?
>>
Sooo these are just the usual redump torrents that have been around since forever? Is this aimed at zoomers who don't know how to pirate games?
>>
>>734848718
ipfs is a good middleground between torrent and ddl, and has a built in (cryptoshit) seeding economy that works surprisngly well
not sure how well it scales to 400tb of content though
>>
>>734771915
For all we know the minerva guys could be a server of 1000 people who have been downloading off myrient for years and only now pooling it all together.

Good goy, don't download ROMs today. You'll always have a chance to buy them later!

I haven't used it in a long minute, but the tooling used to be pretty shit. On paper it looks good, but in practice it's nih bittorrent for crypto scams and zoomers.

Every reply in every myrient thread for the past couple days was "wow what a retard for hosting it all on a server and not in torrents." Now the script has flipped and it's "wow only retards use torrents, everything should be hosted on a single centralized fallible server." /v/ is just that contrarian.
>>
>>734852482
>v/ is just that contrarian

no, it's not

So what? There's plenty of ROM sites and vimms lair is at the top. I'd never even heard of myrient before this fiasco.
>>
With Myrient shutting down, what's going to happen to hShop? Will that one stay up?

That was when children was well-educated and know their places to never visit adult sites. Now, you won't believe how many fucking young teenagers struggles spell words nor even know how to read.
>>
>>734834051
>I'm 37
>I have been pirating since 2003
>i dont know what "no-intro" is
>what is "redump"?
>what "scene"?
>never heard of any of that terminology
you are not 37 years old, or you haven't been pirating since 2003, or both, cause all of these terms are literally the essential core and minimum base knowledge of ANYTHING pirating related, ESPECIALLY from that era
>>
>>734852671
>there's pleny of ROM sites and one of the sites with the slowest speed imposed bu the site and extremely limited selection of games is the best, and i've never heard of this site with literally all games from all consoles all available for download at the max speed allowed by your IPS
holy cope
>>
>>734852981
>Now, you won't believe how many fucking young teenagers struggles spell words nor even know how to read.
and to think that there was an era where teenagers where more versed in CSS than some professionals(at the tme) and they were styling their tumblr pages to the limit and constantly asking the site to allow for more code customization, meanwhile teens of today couldnt do a Hello World batch script if their life depended on it....hell, who am i kidding, they don't even know how to unzip a file
>>
>>734853257
I mostly buy the games I like because I'm not a poorfag anymore. I don't play thousands of games. No need to know any of that when you download from Vimm, you just click on the console, the letter and the game and that's it.
>>
>>734853712
that has literally nothing to do with what i said
you being 37 and not knowing what those terms are is impossible if it is true that you've been pirating since 2003, and using vimm is not an excuse cause vimm wasnt a thing back then
>>
>>734776097
i fucking hate limewire. my sisters used it for pirating shit when i was really little, all i used the pc for was looking at youtube videos and cheat codes/glitches for games. when the pc got shit-tons of viruses, i got blamed for it and was banned from the pc until i was like, 15. and the only reason my mom let me use it again is because i learned how to fix it whenever it had a problem.

sure, the site has been around since what, 1998? but we're talking about a time when downloading a since 128kpbs mp3 song took minutes, so while the site did exist back then, it wasn't as usuable as all the other alternatives of the day.
and lets not pretend everyone used it either, the site owner himself has always been transparent about once stressing about not having a lot of traffic, that only relatively recently(still in terms of many years) it's picked up pace, but that it's still a low level traffic and that is the main reason why he's been able to run the site for so long, both in terms of costs and in terms of it not blowing in popularity to the point he'd have to update his infrastructure beyond what he initially created back then.
So no, when I say "vimm wasn't a thing back then" i dont mean "Vimm's Lair site didn't exist", rather that it wasnt a thing most people used or even knew about, so lets not pretend it was some main stream site everyone relied on, it wasnt, and it wasnt to the point it allowed him to keep a low profile for all these decades.

It's the same as saying "internet wasnt a thing in the 90", of course internet existed in the 90s, but it wasn't this wide spread thing everyone and their mom used, it wasnt part of the average person's life.

Also, rich coming from someone who claims he's been pirating since 2003 when you say you don't know what "scene" is, considering the pirating scene existed since back in the 80s and still does.

1) Get a VPN
2) Turn on VPN
3) Torrent
Is it really that hard?

There's no such thing as hidden gems any more. Everything with any redeeming value has been stripmined and documented by memesters, tubers, forums, ... Just pick a console and a genre and do a deep dive. I didn't play F-Zero GX or Elemental Gearbolt until pretty recently, and they're both excellent if not obscure.

You don't need myrient for something like that either. Myrient is for autistic shit like MSU-1 sets or finding a flac copy of Seiken Densetsu Ongaku Daizenshuu Disc 19. Which if you recognize the first two words you'll probably recognize the album once you hear it.

This never happens unless you're dealing with especially deranged porn site operators who are OK losing tons of money going after pirates. Copyright infringement generally isn't even a civil matter let alone criminal.

Reminder that you can help preservation by submitting dump metadata to Redump (optical media) and No-Intro (cartridges and digital downloads, including DRM-free PC releases).
https://dumping.guide/
http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=Dumping_Guides

For the record, this infograph (back from 2022) is not about missing official releases for those consoles. All of them were dumped. It's meant to indicate how many got a single dump, and how many got 2 or more.

>what drives do I need to dump CD games?
http://wiki.redump.org/index.php?title=Optical_Disc_Drive_Compatibility:_CD
For PS2 and PC DVD games, any DVD drive will work fine.
>why are verifications important?
>Verifications are vital in verifying that the information in the database is accurate, and that a dump is reproduceable by another person using the same tools and methods. An existing dump could be erroneous due to a variety of factors, including user error, hardware and software issues, and more. Furthermore, even when someone is doing everything correctly and has adequate software and hardware, there is a chance that their dump could be incorrect, due to the way data sectors on a disc are read and validated (especially Compact Discs). In most cases, the data will be read and verified successfully, but the process of reading data is not infallible, so there are times when a second dump of the same disc could provide differing information. Verifications help to identify and correct some of these issues.

The software used for this purposes is MPF (Windows-only), which serves as a frontend for DIC and Redumper (and Aaru too).
https://github.com/SabreTools/MPF/releases/latest
You can also use their standalone versions (ALSO available for Mac and Linux):
https://github.com/saramibreak/DiscImageCreator/releases/latest
