It's no worse than being the sole DDL source for those items but for all the popular shit, torrents alleviate a lot of the bandwidth from the archive site so they can "re-distribute" that to those niche ones (cost-wise)

All these issues people have with torrents are primarily a problem for public tracker plebs. With a closed private system, everyone is incentivized to keep things seeding, which ensures most if not all content hosted has a healthy stock of seeders at any given moment. On the off chance something does hit zero seeds a call can be put out and people who answer it and begin seeding it again get rewarded for keeping it alive.

They wouldn't know if you DDL. That's what makes them safe. Torrents are insecure by their nature. A DDL is a secure connection between you and the server you're downloading from. Only your ISP can see that and they aren't going go out of their way to snitch on you to the IP holder and aren't even actively monitoring your traffic like that. A torrent is like an open swap meet where anybody can just show up and there's nothing stopping the cops (IP holder) from just sitting in the parking lot and writing down everyone's license plate (IP) number.

In America the police/legal system wont be involved. They learned pretty early on suing the shit out of grandmas because little Billy downloaded Metallica off of napster was a bad look for them. Instead, IP holders and ISPs basically have an agreement that if the IP holder catches one of the ISP's customers (That's all they can trace your IP address to without some kind of investigation) torrenting something they own, the ISP (who actually know who you are) will agree to discipline the customer and potentially cut them off from the internet if they keep doing it.
