Ask SQSH Board to Remove Luka Cai as E​.​D.

Over the past year, SQSH has lost many good people. Although this happens naturally every year as people serve their allotted time as volunteers and move on to the next stages of their lives, this year has been different. SQSH has gone from having between 70-90+ volunteers in the past, to now having 15-25 volunteers. Staff has gone from 9 members to 3, with all 6 who left having been harmed by executive director Luka Cai. Through Luka's mismanagement and abandonment of their duties, the Helpline may now have to take steps back and reduce the services offered to community members if it can continue at all. 

 

 

Policy is changing behind closed doors, with effected people excluded from meaningful conversations in the development of new policies.  Accessibility and ethics seem like boxes to check, or qualifications to subvert, and not ways to include all interested parties. And most importantly, people are becoming afraid. Afraid to disagree, afraid to speak up, afraid that there is no safe choice whether they stay or leave.. 

 

In a recent meeting, multiple people said that they would like to see Luka Cai step down from the position of Executive Director, but were concerned about what Luka would think, or do to them or SQSH in retaliation. For anyone who feels capable, this is one way that we can stand together. Hopefully, our voices can create a chorus that will finally be heard. 

 

We ask the new Board of SQSH to remove Luka Cai from their position as ED and from any management of SQSH. Although this is not what anyone wanted, it has become clear to the signatories of this petition that there is no other way for SQSH to avoid a wreck than to remove Luka Cai from the helm.

As a former, recent staff member, I have witnessed the patterns of harm, abuse of power, retaliation and lack of accountability escalate and multiply. Staff & volunteers have addressed this directly with ED, HR and Board, and yet no change occurs. I remain a vocal advocate of a changeover in executive leadership as silence would be complicity in further harm, and the people that labor to keep SQSH operational deserve leadership that embodies queer liberatory values in action.

I joined SQSH because of its radical values and as time has passed it has been beyond disappointing to witness and experience white supremacy and capitalistic values and actions as the priority of this org. It has become clear that Luka would rather fight for power and control than do what would be best for both the org and those the org is aiming to help.

SQSH has little to no connection with Black Queer St.Louis folks and it’s not because of the services and volunteers. Folks have directly names Luka as being the main source of harm and uncomfortability with supporting the org. The lack of self reflection and accountability on how they are further contributing to white supremacist culture is the direct reason.
