For the Summer Games, one athlete representing ‘China’, at that time, first competed at the Games of the X Olympiad Los Angeles 1932, taking part in the sport of athletics. At the Games of the XXIII Olympiad Los Angeles 1984 Haifeng Xu became the first athlete representing the People’s Republic of China to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s shooting 50m pistol 60 shots event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing the People’s Republic of China first competed at the XIII Olympic Winter Games Lake Placid 1980, taking part in the disciplines of alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, figure skating and speed skating. At the XVI Olympic Winter Games Albertville 1992 Qiaobo Ye became the first athletes representing the People’s Republic of China to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing silver in the women’s speed skating 500m event. At the XIX Olympic Winter Games Salt Lake City 2002 Yang Yang (A) became the first athlete representing the People’s Republic of China to win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the women’s short track speed skating 500m event.
As host to the 2022 Games, the People's Republic of China won more gold and total medals in Beijing than ever before, including its first gold medal in snowboard, a first medal of any colour (bronze) in skeleton, and its second ever gold medal in both figure skating and speed skating. The People's Republic of China also topped the freestyle skiing medal table with four gold and two silver medals in Beijing. Chinese athletes also took part in luge and Nordic combined for the first time at the 2022 Games. Eight Chinese athletes won more than one medal in Beijing, but only two won more than one gold - freestyle skier Eileen Gu was the most successful with two gold and one silver, while short track speed skater Ren Ziwei won two gold. The NOC's youngest medallist in Beijing was men's snowboarder Su Yiming, who took slopestyle silver and then won big air gold just a few days shy of his 18th birthday. Su was the youngest male from any NOC to win gold in Beijing, while Gu was the second-youngest female (behind ROC figure skater Anna Shcherbakova) to win gold in Beijing.
