For the Summer Games, athletes representing France first competed at the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, taking part in the sports or disciplines of artistic gymnastics, athletics, track cycling, fencing, shooting and tennis. At the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, Alexandre Tuffèri became the first athletes representing France to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing silver in the men’s athletics triple jump event. At the same edition of the Games, Eugene-Henri Gravelotte became the first athlete representing France to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the men’s fencing foil event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing France first competed at the I Olympic Winter Games Chamonix 1924, taking part in the sports or disciplines of bobsleigh, cross country skiing, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, military patrol, Nordic combined, ski jumping and speed skating. At the I Olympic Winter Games Chamonix 1924, athletes representing France won a first Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s military patrol team event. At the II Olympic Winter Games St. Moritz 1928, Andrée Joly and Pierre Brunet became the first athletes representing France to win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the Figure skating mixed pairs event.

Nearly 100 years later, at Beijing 2022, France produced its best ever Winter Games performance. The NOC won five gold and seven silver among 14 total medals in Beijing, surpassing the five gold and four silver won at PyeongChang 2018. On both occasions, and as has been the case for most of the 21st century, biathlon produced the majority of France's gold medals. Of the 24 Winter Games gold medals France has won since Salt Lake City 2002, 12 have come in biathlon, and six of these were won by Martin Fourcade. At the 2022 Games, Quentin Fillon Maillet's two gold among five total medals made him the second French biathlete after Fourcade to win more than one Olympic gold. Fillon Maillet was one of four athletes from any NOC, including two other biathletes and a cross-country skier, to win five total medals in Beijing. Another French biathlete to win gold in Beijing was Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, whose victory in the women's 12. 5km mass start was France's first gold in a women's biathlon event since 2006. Also in Beijing, France won its first figure skating gold medal since 2002 with victory in the ice dance event by Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, while Clement Noel's victory in the men's slalom was France's first Alpine skiing gold since 2006. Also in Alpine skiing, Frenchman Johan Clarey took silver in the men's downhill at age 41 years and 30 days to become the oldest athlete to win an Alpine skiing Olympic medal.
