This page is about the character. For the anime episode, see Episode 11.

Rem (レム) is a maid in service of Margrave Roswaal L. Mathers alongside her sister, Ram. She is one of the main supporting characters of Re:Zero, with major roles in Arc 2, Arc 3, and Arc 7, and a supporting role in Arc 8, Arc 9, and Arc 10. During the first half of Arc 2, she was the secondary antagonist.

Born the younger twin of Ram, Rem, have an inferiority complex, was attached to and only relied on her sister, caring for no other. Following her sister after the destruction of her home with the Oni Clan, she became a maid of the Roswaal Manor, working hard to bear the burden that her sister no longer can with the intent of becoming her horn in her place.[5] However, she began to open up after Natsuki Subaru's arrival to the mansion, falling for him. At the end of Arc 3, she had her name and memories eaten by Lye Batenkaitos and subsequently fell into suspended animation. She later awoke at the end of Arc 6 bearing amnesia.

Appearance[]

Rem has medium-length sky blue hair that covers her right eye, large light blue eyes, and young features. She also has hair clips towards the left side of her hair, a flower-shaped ribbon on the same side of her hair, and a maid hairband. She looks nearly identical to her sister apart from her hair, eyes, and ribbon coloring. She usually wears a maid uniform, and since her chest is slightly larger than her sister's, she secretly changes the measurements to hide it.

In Arc 6, Rem was dressed in a long-sleeved pink dress with white frills at the hem of the long skirt, pink boots, black leggings, and a pink cloak to protect her from the sands of the Augria Sand Dunes. She continues to wear this uniform.

When she was young, she wore a white kimono and a pair of zoris, a native dress of the onis, and her hair was styled the same as in the present day.[6] After joining Roswaal Manor's staff, she began to don her maid uniform.

Personality[]

Rem is a competent, loyal person who always tries her best. Initially, in public, Rem is someone who maintains an emotionless expression, not displaying feelings like sadness or anger to maintain formality. She speaks politely to others, even if she dislikes them internally. Additionally, she possesses a sharp tongue and can unknowingly say blunt or critical things to the people she interacts with. While calm on the surface, in intense situations, Rem often gets tunnel vision and locks onto a singular objective. She tends to try to do everything on her own, bearing the burden of everything on her shoulders. Initially, from her perspective, only Ram and things directly related to Ram were important. This leads Rem to make rash decisions to protect her community, without needing to think twice about the situation. Working at Roswaal Manor, she also holds respect for its master, having been thankful for his actions towards demi-humans.[7] More than anything, due to the way she grew up, Rem harbored excessive feelings of attachment, gratitude, and respect towards her older twin sister, Ram. Because she was always alone, her sister's care became a source of comfort, yet at the same time, something that caused her to feel as if she was suffocating.[8] She is fully aware of how extraordinary her sister is, which she looks up to her for, but at the same time, not being able to understand the things that she can have made her feel worthless.[9] Throughout her life, she constantly put herself down while propping her sister up, which, combined with the fact that she was born with one horn and was significantly weaker than her brethren, has led to an inferiority complex, and this complex deepened as a result of her guilt from feeling the slightest hint of joy after her sister's horn was severed, leading her to aim for becoming a perfect servant to atone for what she felt she had robbed from Ram.[10] This also leads her to understand others who have a similar complex, like Frederica Baumann has about her teeth.[11] Burdened by a sense of atonement toward Ram, she overworks herself, doing things in a way she believes her sister would.

Despite what happened to her village, though she was saddened by their deaths, she harbored little sorrow for the deaths of her kinsmen, having been grateful that she still had her sister,[12] and the only reason she initially agreed to take revenge with Ram was for Ram's sake rather than her own. During her time at Roswaal Manor, though her sense of inferiority and guilt never diminished, she felt more fulfilled than she ever did in her village, which weighed heavily on her conscience, as she was aware the only reason this was the case was because her kinsmen were killed.[13][14] Simultaneously, her anger and attachment toward getting the revenge that her sister desired also diminished, as she was becoming happier while living at the manor.[15] That being said, her sense of hatred will resurge when put into said environment. Because of this incident, she has a deep sense of hatred for the Witch Cult and believes that nothing good can come from the Witch’s scent, and upon smelling it in her youth, she became quick to act, vengeful, and highly aggressive, to the point that she was willing to torture a man to death to draw out information about his co-conspirators.[16] Even in the present day, that loathing led her to suspect, torture, and even kill Subaru on one occasion, as she suspected him to be a member of the Witch Cult because of his strange behavior and the scent wafting from him.

Thanks to the assistance of Subaru, Rem’s narrow worldview began to expand. No longer thinking of herself as her sister’s substitute, she started developing stronger bonds with the people around her. Rem felt grateful to Subaru for helping her move forward and developed a deep love for him, becoming one of his most loyal followers, to the point that she always believes in him as her "hero" no matter what, even if Subaru himself for some reason loses faith in his abilities, thereby serving him as an important emotional support even when she is not around, though she still maintains a low opinion of herself and can fall back into self-deprecation when comparing herself to Ram. It is because of this that she started to understand Garfiel Tinzel's behavior when he was around her sister, which she at first did not understand. After her confession, she becomes more open and honest about her feelings for Subaru. She boldly declares her love to the people around her. Her heart opened in a true sense, and she diminished the emotional restrictions she once had. Likewise, Rem displays great protectiveness, healing and defending Crusch against Regulus and Lye, two Sin Archbishops, even though her loss was certain.

After having awoken from her year and a half slumber, Rem acquired amnesia which left her in a state similar to that of Crusch at the end of Arc 3. In this state, rather than referring to herself by her name as she had before, she referred herself with I or my (私, watashi), and she tended to refer to Subaru as that person (あの人, ano hito). She was very wary of everyone, especially Subaru, even going as far as trying to strangle him twice and set up decoy paths and traps in order to get away from him, as she considered him dangerous due to a combination of the overwhelming Witch's Scent seeping from him after his numerous deaths, as well as his resentment for Spica and refusal to help her in her current state, as Rem saw her as just an innocent child.

After some time, she became less wary of those around her, and she came to accept her name as her own, despite initially not feeling as though it was. She often showed kindness to people like Katya Aurélie, acting similarly to how Subaru was to her as Katya tried to push her away, and she has shown to similar fondness to Ram as she used to. Thanks to Subaru's influence, she became willing to take gambles during times when her situation was uncertain,[17] including taking irrational options when provided with rational options,[18] and thanks to Priscilla Barielle, her sense of self became stronger. Though she still acts particularly harsh towards Subaru, she has also shown her protective side as well, going out of her way to attack Todd when he was in danger, as well as a slightly envious side, which she displayed numerous times when he interacted with Emilia. She has shown to dislike how he takes on burdens by himself, and she still feels guilt about the way she acted around him, to the point that she feels she must make up for it before she can truly apologize.

History[]

The Oni Sisters of the Hidden Village[]

Rem lived with her father, mother, and her elder sister Ram in an Oni village. Initially, because they were born with one horn each, it meant they were defective in the view of the Oni community, who believe in individual strength above all else, and were despised for it. They were to be killed as part of the custom of Oni to protect their pride as the strongest of the demi-humans. However, just before the execution, Ram displayed the potential of her power to protect them both, which shocked the community and caused them to kneel. Being allowed to live thanks to her older sister, who had an aptitude that had not been seen since the era of Witches, Rem spent the rest of her days in her shadow. Despite the presence of her sister also raising expectations for herself in the community, she could never meet them or surpass her sister in any area, which earned her disappointment from the other villagers. However, Rem loved her sister and accepted her place behind her and her parents still cared for them both deeply, even if she herself found it difficult to believe in front of the brilliance of her older sister.

One day, Rem awoke and panicked when she saw that her sister was not with her. Deciding to go and find her, she left her house, meeting her neighbor, who showed her concern and called Ram’s name with an honorific. Her heart slightly hurt, Rem raced off and eventually found Ram, who reassured Rem. Afterward, Ram felt a visitor had approached the village and went to confront him. Meeting an old giant who claimed to know and wanted to meet with Setanta, Ram, who was wary of him, took him to meet the chief. After meeting with him, Setanta introduced the man as Cromwell, though the giant claimed he now went by Rom. Though Setanta ordered Rem to go home and Ram to stay behind, Ram harshly refused and left with Rem, leaving Setanta and Rom to talk to each other. Though Rem was concerned if Ram was okay to do that, Ram reassured her, and after using her magic to deal with a chore, the two went to play and collect yams for steamed potatoes, and Rem forgot Ram’s serious expression as she pondered the meaning of the meeting. When they returned to the village, they came across an angry Setanta and Rom, who had apparently declined Setanta’s request. With Rom leaving and telling Setanta not to treat Ram as a kid only when it was convenient, he left the village, telling the girls to be good sisters.

Sometime later, Rem awoke to find that Ram was missing. Deciding to find her, after burning her hand on the doorknob, she realized her house was on fire, and she bust down the door to find Ram. She eventually made it outside, only to find the village ablaze and littered with oni corpses, including her parents and neighbor. She also bore witness as Setanta fought off strange, robed men until he was eventually killed. When the men decided to kill Rem, Ram appeared, slaughtering the men. However, as an explosion threatened to kill Rem, Ram grabbed her and leapt away. Taking injuries as she continued fighting, she was eventually faced with one of the men, who prepared to kill them. As he swung, Ram stood in front of Rem to protect her, and her horn was severed. Rem passed out from the shock. Ram, despite her injuries, managed to grab Rem and run, escaping the men. However, they eventually collapsed on the mountain road, where Roswaal L. Mathers discovered them on the way to their village. Upon meeting Ram, who asked to save Rem, Roswaal asked what she could offer him, to which she offered herself, saying that she couldn't make decisions for Rem.

When Rem next awoke, she was in Roswaal Manor, and Ram, whose face was pale, was next to her. Recalling what happened to the village, she was despondent. Then, a maid, Frederica Baumann, appeared in the room to retrieve Ram, introducing herself and slightly startling Rem with her teeth, which made them both feel guilty. As Frederica scolded Ram and mentioned her broken horn, the memories of what happened at the end of the attack on the oni village ran through Rem's mind, and in her panic, her horn protruded from her head and she thrashed around, forcing Ram and Frederica to hold her down. After Ram bit down on her horn and made her pass out, Ram passed out beside her, leaving the indignant Frederica to deal with the mess. Later, Rem woke up, and Ram wasn't beside her. Instead, Roswaal was, and he bluntly told her that everyone had died, picking at her emotional scars and at her bond with Ram, frustrating her to the point that she snapped at Roswaal, which was his goal, to make her more responsive. Afterward, she demanded to see her sister, and though Roswaal stated that it would not be good for either of them, he ultimately allowed her to see Ram, and Frederica led her to Ram's room, who claimed that Roswaal wasn't a bad person despite the way he speaks.

Upon arriving at Ram's room, she was surprised to see it covered in numerous locks and a magic circle, which Frederica unlocked. Despite Rem's instincts urging her to back away, she entered the room, only to see Ram writhing in pain as her mana was running wild and locked down to the bed. After being told that Ram had been holding this in until after she saw Rem was okay, Rem ran back to her room, where she begged Roswaal to save Ram. Like with Ram, he asked what Rem could offer him in return, to which she offered herself. Pleased with her response, he muttered that taking the sizes for the maid outfits should be left to Clind, and he went to deal with Ram's rampaging mana. Later, when Ram awoke, she and Rem spoke, with Rem revealing that she offered herself to serve Roswaal. Ram, who realized that they were being toyed with, explained that she did the same for Rem, making Rem happy. Afterward, the two embraced, and with Ram claiming that the men who destroyed their village got away, she decided to claim retribution on them, and Rem, who wasn't particularly sorrowful about the destruction of their village, agreed.

Later, Clind prepared maid outfits for Ram and Rem. Ram notes how there are almost exclusively demi-humans working for Roswaal, to which Frederica explained that Roswaal took in demi-humans with nowhere to go, and he gave them a job and an education without asking for anything in return. They notice how it was different for Rem and Ram, which Frederica suspects is because the sisters would have rushed out of the manor otherwise, which Ram could not refute. Over the following month, the two were taught by Frederica and Clind how to speak and act as a servant and a basic education. However, it is also discovered that the loss of Ram's horn interfered with Ram's work. The need for retribution within Rem also began to wane, and one day, she spoke with Roswaal about her life in the manor, and the weight of her conscience about living there. The conversation moved to how Rem noticed the Witch Cult was responsible for the village's destruction, which Roswaal unintentionally confirmed. Roswaal discouraged her from vengeance, and Rem said she would speak to Ram about it. When Ram appeared for Rem, the two left the room, and Ram noticed her formal speech, and the two spoke about their relationship with Roswaal. As they walked, however, Rem got lost in her thoughts, and when Ram called out to her, she spoke formally again, something which worried Ram.

Another month passed, and in the time the two were at the manor, she had seen numerous servants go to work at other mansions once they were confirmed to have received satisfactory education. One day, Roswaal prepared to set off for the Sanctuary, intent on bringing Ram with him. Soon after, after convincing the two it was for their own good to be separated, he and Ram left for the Sanctuary, Frederica giving a letter to Ram to give to her brother, Garfiel. The next day, Clind tasked her with cleaning the basement on Roswaal's orders, and he left. Having to take the other servants to take on new posts, Frederica also left, leaving Rem behind at the manor alone. With the key to the basement, she made her way there, where she noticed a horrid but familiar stench. Led by her nose, she found herself in front of a sealed door, and despite her caution, when she heard the clicking that she heard the night her village was destroyed, she busted through the door and came face to face with one of the men responsible for attacking that night, Fogg, and he set off an explosion and sent her flying. Despite receiving a heavy blow, Rem was able to stand back up and keep fighting, getting hit by numerous explosions. Noticing that their bad scent appeared before the explosions, she used that to avoid the worst damage, and she assaulted her enemy. Eventually, she grabbed a magic stone and tossed it towards one of the man's explosive traps, setting it off. She attacked once again, but he set off all of the explosions, destroying the room. Protected by a collapsing shelf, the man managed to escape the room, only for Rem, now holding her morningstar, to appear behind him and take off his arm. Hitting him numerous times, she decided to use healing magic, which she used instinctively, on him, torturing him for his name, Fogg, and the names of his comrades, Sergei, Sado, and Faust. Then when she killed him, she passed out. She was later found by Clind, beaten and bloody, and he took her to her room. When Roswaal and Ram returned, Ram stuck by Rem's side, and when she later awoke, she spoke with Roswaal, claiming that she would act as Ram's horn and substitute.

Another month later, Roswaal, Frederica, Ram, and Rem visited the Royal Capital, which was celebrating the Tammuz Festival, to buy a gift to celebrate the birth of child of House Miload. Deciding to split up to search for a gift, Roswaal took Ram with him while Frederica took Rem, and the two decided to meet up again later. As the two looked at the stores, Frederica asked about the kinds of gifts that Rem and Ram would give to each other, setting off Rem to go and buy a gift for Ram now that she had the chance. However, Frederica stopped her, and having been inspired by Rem's answers and responses, they looked through various shops. Eventually, however, Rem's nose caught a whiff of the same scent that came off of Fogg, and she followed it, leading to a bag containing a magical miasma stone. Deciding to reunite with Roswaal and Ram, the former of which had bought gifts for the latter, they discussed the possible plans that the Witch Cult were scheming. Deciding to split again, Roswaal and Ram went to alert the capital's guardsmen while Frederica beastified and took Rem with her to look for the scattered stones, which Ram had predicted the locations of.

After dealing with the stones, the two came across Sado, the man planting them. Having been prepared to escape at a moment's notice, he dodged Rem's morningstar, which she had been training with, and summoned other Witch Cultists to hold them off while he flew away. Although the two were cornered and were nearly forced to retreat, much to Rem's outrage due to knowing that she would never come across the man again, a young Reinhard van Astrea appeared and offered to hold off the remaining Witch Cultists, allowing for Frederica and Rem to chase after Sado. However, as the two approached more heavily populated areas and Sado was off in the distance, the two were forced to stop. However, thanks to her Clairvoyance and Synesthesia, Ram was able to see through Rem's eyes, and using her new wand fashioned from her horn and gifted to her by Roswaal, she used her magic to sever Sado's limbs from afar, effectively defeating him. Rem and Frederica chased after Sado. After meeting him, Rem attempted to question him, but the man merely said that he pitied her and gave his name before he died, giving her no answers and frustrating her. Afterward, Reinhard appeared, having successfully captured all of the Witch Cultists alive, and after deciding to preserve the scene to allow Frederica to revert back and clothe herself, she and Rem left, with the intent to explain things to the guards. As they left, Rem solidified her resolve before mentioning they would have to find a gift for House Miload now.

Ten days later, Roswaal brought Rem and Ram to the Miload Manor, where they met the pregnant Grace Miload, Roswaal's excuse for bringing them being that they ought to see childbirth for themselves, and his continued interactions with Grace made Ram grumpy. After a short conversation, Rem and Ram went to another room, where, after a different conversation about being unable to kill time and how Rem did so in the village, interacted with the servants of the manor. Three days later, Dudley Miload was late in returning to the manor, and when a young man arrived to tell everyone that the carriage broke down, Roswaal and Rem went to retrieve him, leaving Ram to keep Grace company. After arriving at his carriage, the young man brought Rem forward to witness the bloody corpses. When she brought out her horn, she was nearly incapacitated by the man's poisoning of mana. When the man blew away the carriage Roswaal was in, the young man, Sergei, summoned several Witch Cultists before attempting to strangle Rem to death, only for Roswaal to appear and blast them all with magic and retrieve Rem. Deciding to handle them, Roswaal sent Rem back to the manor, blowing away the cultists that got in her way. When she eventually returned to the manor, she found Faust, the last of the men who attacked her village, grabbing Ram by the throat, intending to throw her into the explosive traps set in the garden. Seeing this, Rem hit him in the head with her morningstar. With Ram on her back, the two avoided the explosions that followed them, and Rem struck him. When he attempted a sneak attack, she managed to counter him, breaking his weapon with her teeth, and she struck him numerous times while piercing through the upper floors. After pushing through the roof, Rem struck the man and sent him flying into the explosive traps, and when Ram threw his burning leaf tobacco into it, they went off, reducing the man to ash.

Later, Roswaal returned, having killed the Witch Cultists and brought Sergei back for the twins to kill. Afterward, Limrear appeared, saying that the baby had been born but that Grace didn't have much time left. In the room she was in, several bloody rags were nearby, and the baby was in the arms of a servant. Waking Grace, she gave her baby the name Annerose, and she asked Roswaal to take care of her. Dying, she said that she loved Roswaal, and she laughed when he returned her words, saying he was a bad liar. In the end, she died, leaving the servants to cry. After this, Roswaal became Annerose's guardian, and House Miload was put under his control. Many of the remaining servants who survived resigned, and Roswaal decided to have Clind and Frederica serve at House Miload, with Roswaal choosing to have his hobby of taking care of and training demi-human servants being performed at the Miload Manor and by those two. A year later, Rem and Ram visited the Oni village's grave and performed their funeral rites with alcohol given to them by Roswaal.

Abilities[]

Oni Bloodline (鬼の血族, Oni no Ketsuzoku): As she is an Oni, Rem can enter her Oni form, manifesting a single white horn on her forehead. Like the rest of her race, she has physical attributes that surpass that of regular humans, and those attributes are enhanced further when she manifests her horn. She is capable of killing witchbeasts with her bare fists and showed no strain in carrying Subaru. Even as a child, she was capable of crushing the heads of fully grown men by slamming the hilt of her weapon into them or shatter a knife with a bite.[19][20] However, her ferocity is also increased, and if she is not careful, she could lose herself to her instincts and try to kill everything in sight. Furthermore, if she overexerts herself while her horn is manifested, it is likely that the recoil would render her weak. As a twin, Rem was born with a single horn that appeared smaller than an average Oni's, meaning her power in her Oni state was lower than her kin's. Similarly, being Ram’s twin, Rem can temporarily act as her horn and give her access to more of her power. However, doing so interferes with her body’s internal mana circulation, which once made it difficult for her to use her legs.

  • Unknown Ability: Rem can smell the Witch's Scent, something that only a few individuals in the series so far, are capable of doing. It is currently unknown how Rem is capable of doing this, though it most likely stems from the night her village was attacked and destroyed by the Witch Cult, as prior to that event, Rem never displayed such an ability. It is revealed by Echidna in Re:IF Kasaneru that this is a natural ability of the Oni tribe as well as their purpose for existing despite the fact that her sister does not appear to possess this power.
  • Limited Regeneration: While her horn protrudes from her head, her body's regenerative capabilities are increased.[21] Although not absolute or perfect, it can prevent her from racking up too many wounds at once. Combined with her healing magic, she can avoid fatal attacks much easier.
  • Blade-like Nails: While enhanced by her horn, her nails become sharp enough that they can easily rend through flesh.[22]
  • Heightened Mana Sensitivity: During the events of Arc 9, with her horn protruding from her head and absorbing mana, Rem's sensitivity to changes in it became heightened. During her battle with Yae Tenzen, she realized her potential with this and had become capable of sensing intent through the emotional changes that are hidden in mana, allowing Rem to defend or act appropriately when in the face of unexpected or unseen attacks. The greater her opponent's bloodlust, the more sensitive she was to it, allowing her to react quicker. This also allowed her to determine the intent of her allies by perceiving their mana, allowing her to react appropriately even without words. Since Subaru has changed the events leading to this ability's awakening, she does not retain this ability.
Rem receiving a warning from Ram, through Synesthesia.

Rem receiving a warning from Ram, through Synesthesia.

Synesthesia (共感覚, Kyōkankaku): An ability that she shares with her sister. It allows them to share their feelings with each other, something which can allow them to alert the other of possible danger.[23] If Ram is in intense danger, such as being on the verge of death, Rem will feel those feelings as well, something which will make her feel pain and pant, such as in one failed loop. This ability also allows the two to sense each other over larger distances, albeit vaguely. Most importantly, however, this allows Rem to share Ram's burden when she needs to access more of her power, essentially allowing her to act as Ram's "horn". This being said, the one time this was shown to happen, Rem was unable to use her legs properly, as her internal mana circulation had been greatly disturbed.

Magic (魔法, Mahō): Rem is skilled at water magic. Roswaal, who taught her how to use it, estimates her skills being above average but nothing exceptional. She is able to attack and heal using her magic.

  • Healing Magic (治癒魔法, Chiyu Mahō): Rem summons water mana to heal the wounds of herself and others.
  • Huma (ヒューマ): Rem creates a shining water barrier that blocks other projectiles and sorts of magic. However, if the incoming magic is stronger than the shield, it will get through it and cause damage to the user. She can also shape her ice in any manner she needs to, similar to how Aldebaran uses his earth magic, such as creating midair platforms, wrapping ice around her neck for defense, or creating layers of ice to increase the weight and power of her morningstar.
    • El Huma (エル・ヒューマ): Rem forms and shoots multitudes of ice spears which easily pierces through and crushes flesh that vanish a moment afterwards. She is also able to freeze liquid such as blood, effectively creating deadly spikes out of her enemies' blood, impaling unsuspecting foes.
    • Ul Huma (ウル・ヒューマ): Rem materializes and shoots three pillars of ice, each as thick as a hundred spears bundled together.
    • Al Huma (アル・ヒューマ): Rem creates a sharp ten-meter-long spear of ice.

Equipment:

Rem wielding her morningstar.

Rem wielding her morningstar.

  • Morningstar (モーニングスター, Mōningusutā): Rem wields a giant metal spiked ball on long metal chains called a morningstar. Rem is easily capable of causing significant damage to her target with it, whether that be tearing limbs from a person's body or even smashing their heads into paste. She can also use the chains for defense, using them to help deflect attacks. Even after she fell asleep for more than a year, Subaru kept her morningstar polished and clean to ensure it did not become damaged.
  • Walking Stick: During the events of Arc 7, due to the complications with her legs throughout the arc, Rem was forced to use a long cane-like walking stick whenever she walked. She eventually stopped using it once she was able to walk on her own.

Trivia[]
