  • Got more than one question? Number them in a single comment so Rachel can answer everything in one place.

  • Comments will open for questions on November 8th at 12:00 AM ET (Midnight) to 6 PM ET

  • Rachel will begin answering live from 7:00 PM ET until 8:00 PM ET

💬And now, a message from Rachel herself:

Hi! I’m excited to be here to talk about my books and, of course, the Heated Rivalry show! I’m not usually on Reddit, but you can find me on Instagram at rachelreidwrites.

We're about to begin! Here's an updated message from Rachel:

Hi everyone! Thanks so much for the questions and for reading my books! It’s been so awesome seeing all the excitement about the show all over the internet too. I’ll just start by saying I can’t answer any questions about the show’s content, about the book I’m working on now, or about things I think may or may not happen for the Game Changers gang after The Long Game. The reason I can’t talk about the show’s content is probably obvious. As for my next book, I’ve decided to wait a bit to announce it or talk about it because I don’t want to compete with the show hype. I’ll probably announce it in January. And the reason why I don’t want to talk about post-TLG headcanons is because I am working on some stories that I hope to share soon.

Hi Rachel, I've loved your books for years and have reread them a million times. I'm so exited about the adaptation!

My question for you is: did you intentionally write Shane as neurodivergent/autistic? As a queer autistic individual who has a successful career, I see a lot of myself in Shane and I definitely place him on the spectrum in my mind. Was this a conscious decision on your part to make him neurodivergent in one way or another? If not, what were your thoughts when creating his character? Shane is my all time favourite character in the GC universe, so anything you can share about the creation of his character would be amazing. Thanks!!

47

When I wrote Heated Rivalry, I wasn’t specifically thinking about Shane being neurodivergent because I wasn’t particularly informed about that sort of thing. He was just uptight/anxious/focused etc. I then went through the long and complicated journey of getting my neurodivergent oldest child diagnosed, and I learned a lot then, and since. So by the time I wrote The Long Game, I had a better understanding of Shane, I think, and I realized that, yeah, he’s probably autistic. But I also doubt he’ll ever realize it himself. My approach to the two MCs in my book Time to Shine was more deliberate. Casey has undiagnosed ADHD, and Landon has undiagnosed autism. Again, they may never look into getting diagnosed, but I knew going into that book that it was a love story between someone with ADHD and an autistic person.

Thanks so much everyone for the great questions. Sorry I couldn't get to all of them (I really tried!)

I hope everyone loves the show (I know you will).

Hi Rachel! First of all, thank you for sharing this books with us, they are so beautifully written and we are so grateful to know Shane’s and Ilya’s story.

  1. Does Shane ever get a cat?

  2. Some people (me) have started watching hockey because of these books and started rooting for the Senators, what are your thoughts on attracting fans to the game?

  3. Was there a specific moment during Hollanov’s relationship when Yuna and David saw how good they were for one another?

  4. If they hadn’t been professional hockey players, what would Shane and Ilya do for a living?

Again, thank you for sharing their story and greetings from all the way in South America!

40
  1. Maybe...

  2. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to do that to you or anyone else haha.

  3. Oh I think right away. Like, when Shane is having a mild panic attack right after his parents learn about their relationship, Yuna and David see Ilya comforting him. That's probably the moment right there.

  4. Shane would be, like, a personal trainer. I like to think that Ilya would work with kids. Or dogs. Or both.

126

Echoing the second question!!! Before picking Heated Rivalry, I couldn’t have told you what a puck or a slap shot was — and now, a few seasons in, you could probably quiz me on the NHL 🙃.

Hi!

  1. Wondering if youve thought about giving us a glimpse of Shane and Ilya's life playing on the same team or post retirement maybe as a short or even a novella. I know you decided not to continue writing Luca's book, but there had to be little snippets of shane and ilya in there, right? RIGHT?!

  2. You've mostly written sports romances, is there another genre that you're interested in writing?

Thanks so much for giving us ilya and shane and cant wait to read your next work :)

67

I would love to write something else. I love writing stories about hockey players falling in love (obviously), but I do feel like a break from that would be nice. I’d actually like to try to write something that isn’t a romance (though I think anything I write would probably have a romance plot in there somewhere).

88

We would read anything you choose to write, I think!

Hi Rachel! Ottawa is my hometown which made Role Model especially fun for me to read, so I was wondering- Who told you/how did you find out about Taffy Lane? When I was house shopping I refused to even visit a house for sale on that street because it would be such a massive pain in the rear to live there in December 😂 the kids sure love going there during the holidays to get in the spirit!

32

Jenn Burke, the wonderful Ottawa-based author of MM paranormal romance (check out her Not Dead Yet series!) told me about Taffy Lane. It was EXACTLY what I was hoping for when I was looking for a ridiculous festive activity for Harris and Troy. It looks so nuts.

Hi Rachel!!! Absolutely LOVE all your books. Ilya is one of my all time favorite book characters and I am always hoping for more of his internal monologue. Any plans to write a bonus scene of the Wedding at the Pike’s home from Ilya’s persecutive? I would love to hear how smitten he was during that scene.

Second question along those same lines, any plans to write any other scenes from HR or TLG from one of the opposite perspectives?

Third question: did you give Connor or Hudson any advice about playing these characters you created?

57

Re: Connor and Hudson

Not at all. No advice was needed. Connor and Hudson already had very knowledgable guidance from Jacob Tierney, plus they both just really understood their characters right away. I can’t even tell you how perfect they are in these roles.

142

I had a lot of fun writing the Las Vegas hotel scene from Ilya’s POV, but I haven’t felt too inspired to write any other scenes from the opposite characters POV. Sometimes I think about writing scenes from a secondary character’s POV (Hayden, Yuna, etc). Not sure if I’ll ever actually do it.

a) What have you learned about yourself, as you’ve evolved as an author? and b) Can you please rank your MCs in order from least capable of assembling an IKEA Billy Bookcase to most capable?

🫶

72

I've learned I am a very slow writer lol. But more importantly...

Who is best at building an IKEA Billy Bookcase:

1 - Kip (helpful, capable, experienced in manual labour)
2 - Ryan (I think he has basic handyman skills)
3 - Harris (probably has at least 6 in his apartment, all messy)
3 - Eric (very smart, grew up poor, probably hasn’t touched an IKEA product in years, but still knows how to build a cheap shelf)
4 - Scott (same as Eric, basically, but slightly less smart)
5 - Fabian (not a huge fan of IKEA aesthetically, but it’s affordable. More likely to grab a shelf someone else left on the curb)
6 - Shane (probably has never had to assemble IKEA furniture, but would enjoy the challenge)
7 - Kyle (capable, but not interested)
8 - Troy (no patience for it)
9 - Ilya (would never)

172

Oh man, imagine Troy and Ilya building one together

Hi Rachel! I have loved your books for years and re read them a million times, and I keep changing my mind as to when Shane and Ilya fell in love. Was there a specific moment in mind for you?

I also have another question, how do you have your tea?

These books mean so much to me and I’m so grateful for the world you’ve created ❤️

49

I think the moment he fully realized he was in love was when Rose broke up with him. I think he started to realize during the tuna melt scene, then panicked and ran. Then he started dating Rose and thought he could maybe have a “normal” relationship, but then when he saw Ilya in the nightclub, it was like a truck full of feelings hitting him. He was still trying to deny those feelings until Rose basically forced him to acknowledge them. That was the turning point for Shane. He’s still afraid and anxious about being in love with Ilya, but he at least can admit to himself that it’s true and that it might be worth fighting for.

how do you have your tea?

My go-to is Earl Grey with milk, but I’m open to all tea. I’m more of a coffee drinker, though.

117

Is there a specific moment for Ilya?

He seems like he’s already aware of the danger in Vegas, and by tuna melts he knows what’s going on, but I’ve always been super curious about that period of time between 2014-2016 if there’s anything you’d be willing to share!

Hi Rachel,

How did you manage to write Ilya that Russian? As a native speaker of Russian it always surprised me how you managed to give him mannerisms of someone who spent their childhood surrounded by post-Soviet society that well.

64

I really appreciate that. Thank you. I answered this question somewhere else, but I'll just say again that I listened to a lot of real Russian NHL players and paid attention to their vocabulary and how it evolved over the years.

Hi Rachel! Thank you so much for taking your time to do this! I first read the GC series a couple years ago and Shane and Ilya remain one of my favorite book couples. It has been incredible being able to witness this transformation! Congratulations!! My questions are:

  1. Are there any new things in the script that seeing now you would have liked to explore more in the series or vice versa?

  2. Do you have any thoughts on Ilya’s obsession with Shane being boring? I love how much Ilya references Shane being boring yet loves him more than anyone or anything.

  3. How has your experience been seeing this tv show adaptation? For any future works would you like to continue with a tv show approach or would you ever like to see one of your work turn into a movie?

  4. How have you felt with all the new press and fans that have risen since the news of the tv show was released? Any thoughts you would like to share on Shane and Ilya’s relationship or about yourself with existing and new fans?

Thank you so much again! Edited to make spelling correction and fix a question.

20
  1. Can't answer, sorry!

  2. Do you have any thoughts on Ilya’s obsession with Shane being boring? I love how much Ilya references Shane being boring yet loves him more than anyone or anything?

It’s just easier for Ilya to roast Shane for being boring than it is for him to admit that he is head over heels in love with him. And later, after he has admitted it, it’s still just fun. And I think Shane loves it.

3. How has your experience been seeing this tv show adaptation? For any future works would you like to continue with a tv show approach or would you ever like to see one of your work turn into a movie?

My experience has been incredible. Maybe I’m biased, but I think this show is the best adaptation I’ve ever seen. I would really love to see more seasons of Heated Rivalry, obviously, and I would love to see Ryan and Fabian’s story brought to life. I think The Shots You Take would make a good movie 🙂

4. How have you felt with all the new press and fans that have risen since the news of the tv show was released? Any thoughts you would like to share on Shane and Ilya’s relationship with existing and new fans?

I’ve been pretty overwhelmed, to be honest, but not in a bad way. It’s been amazing, seeing all the love for the characters. Truly a dream come true. But it’s always a little stressful to have so much attention. Writing is generally a pretty lonely occupation, so I feel like I opened a door and there was a giant stadium full of people holding Ilya and Shane signs on the other side. It’s very cool, but, yeah. Overwhelming.

Hi Rachel! Thank you so much for bringing us the best hockey boys in the world. I first read Heated Rivalry during the 2022 Winter Olympics, and until today, Ilya and Shane are still my absolute favorites and i still can’t believe we’ll get to see their story come to life soon!

Here, I have two questions:

  1. So I’ve always been curious about something like this: In the 2014 Vegas night, Ilya was already falling hard for Shane, but Shane didn’t know it. And when Shane fled the Montreal nightclub and cried alone in the car, Ilya never knew that either. Moments like these make me wonder if they’ll ever share those experiences (maybe at some point in the future) and finally know what the other was feeling at that time. Do you think they’ll ever get that chance?

  2. In 2022, back when you were still on twitter, i found your twitter account and saved a few screenshots of your ilyashane-related tweets because they were really fun, just like little easter eggs. I’ve cherished them ever since and haven’t shared them publicly, just keep them as snacks for myself. Since you were no longer there, I think it is necessary to check with you first: Would you be comfortable if I share a couple of screenshots of Ilyashane-related tweets in the sub or on other public platforms?

40

I can't answer the first questions, sorry. But as for the second one: Oh god. Maybe? Are the tweets good? I’m embarrassed about everything I’ve ever said ever. Share one here so I can judge.

62

Sure! I selected one and it's like this:

hi Rachel, I’ve been a fan of yours for quite a bit now, and I think you‘re really cool :D! just a silly question I’ve had on my mind for awhile:

  1. is there any reason behind Shane and Ilya being numbers 24 and 81 respectively? heck I’m curious as to if Hunter and Barrett have reasons behind their numbers as well or if it even goes as far as Shane and Ilya‘s hotel room numbers having meaning, or maybe you just picked your favorite numbers/ones you thought looked cool.

like I said, it‘s a silly question I’ve had on my mind since I read the books; thanks for doing this ama <3!

28

I wouldn’t say there’s a meaning. I picked 24 because it’s a good hockey number, and one of my favourite numbers generally. Ilya’s number was actually chosen during a discussion in my Discord server (while I was writing TLG). I thought a number in the eighties felt right, because it’s kind of obnoxious. 81 was decided on because it’s aesthetically pleasing, and because it looks like the word “BI”. The hotel room numbers were definitely just pulled out of the air haha.

Hi Rachel! Thank you so much for all the joy and tears these books have brought me. Truly grateful for you and your art.

  1. When you look back at them now with the benefit of a few years of hindsight, is there anything you’d change? Not looking for specifics, but do you ever think about a scene and be like man, I wish I would have had Ilya say that or Shane do this?

  2. Have you seen anyone guess the correct title of Episode 3?

30

I’ll start by saying that I’d love to make changes to all of my books. It’s hard for me to read my own books because I desperately want to tinker with them and make them better. I’ll talk about HR specifically here, though. My biggest regret with that book is that I was overly concerned with length. It was my second book, and I knew Game Changer had been overly long (I could talk about changes I’d make to GC if I wrote it now but we’d be here all night). So with HR, for whatever reason, I was obsessed with making it less than 90k words, even though is spans many years. Because of that, I think the middle section is too short. I don’t like that Shane’s parents disappear for the whole middle of the book, I don’t like that I didn’t show Shane winning his first Cup, etc. And guess what? If my fantastic editor, Mackenzie Walton, hadn’t gently suggested that the book could be longer, the Vegas hotel scene wouldn’t have been in there either. I’d cut it for length before sending the manuscript to her.

But here’s a small thing I wish I’d done in HR: At the All-Star weekend in Tampa, when they’re in Ilya’s hotel room, Shane should have apologized about bolting out of his apartment after the tuna melt scene. I don’t blame him for not (he was kind of a mess in that hotel room), and maybe he did off page, but I wish I’d shown him apologizing.

And, yes I have seen a few people guess the tite of episode 3 correctly :)

Hi Rachel, so excited for the show! I have a few questions about it.

  1. Were you consulted during the screenwriting process or did you just see the finished scripts?

  2. Was there any part you were nervous about being adapted until you read the scripts or visited the set?

  3. Has the renewed interest in HR changed the way you view it and your other earlier works? Did it make you wish you could go back and change anything?

36
  1. Were you consulted during the screenwriting process or did you just see the finished scripts?

Jacob sent me a very early version of the script for the first episode. He was very excited to get my feedback, which was really touching. All of the scripts are so good, and I loved reading them. I thought it would feel weird, reading someone else’s take on my characters/story, but it was honestly thrilling. I really didn’t have any notes.

  1. Was there any part you were nervous about being adapted until you read the scripts or visited the set?

I was nervous about the producers finding the right actors to play Ilya and Shane. I tried to manage my expectations about that in advance because it just didn’t seem likely they’d find actors who checked all the important boxes for both characters. But I also knew that Jacob understood how important all of those boxes were. And in the end, he found two perfect actors for the roles! Like, beyond my wildest dreams. I’m so grateful.

  1. Has the renewed interest in HR changed the way you view it and your other earlier works? Did it make you wish you could go back and change anything?

Yes. I'm going to answer another similar question about changing things, but going back and changing things, but as for how I view it, this whole year has made me think a LOT about Ilya and Shane specifically. I’ve seen so much deep analysis of the characters and the stories, which is touching and also really wild because I never expected these books to be reread and discussed and analyzed. They’re romance novels, so you expect, as an author, for the books to be read quickly and forgotten about. It’s really thrilling to have created characters who stick around in the imaginations of readers.
