This is a list of known game engines.

  • ScummVM does get referenced on this page because it's the main active engine recreation project (there's almost no other project like it)
  • This page is not limited to the ScummVM project, while they have allowed some non-adventure games to be added like RPGs & strategy games, other projects are needed for engines they most likely won't accept.
  • Engines with historical significance are highlighted in yellow.

Sirius Publishing TQuest 1996 Treasure Quest became infamous after the publisher offered a 1 Million Dollar prize to the first person who finishes the game but this prize had a deadline, December 31, 1999. According to the publisher, the prize was won by P. Dreizen of San Francisco, California, in May of 1998.

Multi-Genre

These engines were used to make games of varying genres, and benefit the most from engine recreations do to the large variety of titles made with them.

Some of these engines such as Macromedia Director and mTropolis were also used to make non-game related software.

Atlas None 1994 47+ Developed by Davidson & Associates, It was used make many kids games and oddities like What's Her Face!, Superstar Rivals and the 2002 adaptation of American Idol. It's place in Video game history is in edutainment, Atlas was used to make entries in classic franchises like the Davidson's Learning Center series, Blaster series, and the JumpStart series. it was used to make quite a few Fisher-Price games as well.

HyperCard None 1987 Developed by Apple, HyperCard was used to make hundreds games and software for MacOS computers from 1987 to roughly 1999. An engine recreation for modern computers would have a major impact on video game and software preservation but this would also be a huge project as well.

It was first used to make "Monster Maker Ultra Edition" and games for Hasbro like Operation & Tonka Construction 2, it would later get used to make educational titles like Arthur's Camping Adventure, Blue's Room & three Clifford The Big Red games.

In an unexpected change in circumstances, there is a chance of it getting added to ScummVM, as Jupiter was used make two adventure games(Mysterious Journey II, Sentinel: Descendants in Time)

ToolBook None 1990 Developed by Asymetrix. ToolBook is authoring platform that was to make video games and software, most of which are undocumented making impossible to say how many games / software were made with it. Although ToolBook has always been marketed, to varying degrees, towards the education sector, Asymetrix would later almost exclusively target the e-learning market once it became clear that they couldn't compete with platforms like Macromedia Director or even mTropolis. The final version of ToolBook was release in 2012 with support ending in 2017.
