Lenovo thinkpad p15 gen 1 gpu replacement
My laptop stopped working, I took it to a repair shop and they told me there were too many ic that did not work and that they could not repair it because they dont have a motherboard replacement. I checked online but the motherboards are too expensive.
here is the specs on my laptop. I was thinking of buying an used one on ebay. Because the laptop has a modular gpu i thought about changing the gpu on the one im gonna buy to the one my broekn laptop has which is the one on the picture will it work ?
Or are there anything i should be aware of to be able to do it ?
I can answer this, as i switched my GPU. You should look if all thermal pads are present, if not use some quality ones like Arctiv TP3, i used 1,5mm. Then if you get errors every startup after switching gpu, something like configuration has been changed. You need to write either your old modell number to your mainboard or modelnumber of a T15p Gen if you used a 2070 Super or 2080 Super. The tool for that is "Lenovo U1 Tool" probably not allowed to link it here, just google it.
If somebody else found this thread and wants to know. I used a RTX 2080 Super in a P15 Gen 1 with T15g Gen 1 Modelnumber, works just fine
wait is it easy? I thought that lenovo had made it almost impossible to switch gpus between models. Does this mean that i can theoretically mount an rtx 3080 from t15g gen 2 in the p15 gen 1 or are the daughter boards different?
yeah super easy, you should replace thermal pads for better ones and thermal paste for ptm7950 anyway, otherwise it gets too hot. But like you said, Gen 2 Board are different, which is a shame, Dell has a better design.
nevermind, the gen 2 daughter boards are different from gen 1 daughter boards
