For the Summer Games, athletes representing Switzerland first competed at the Games of the I Olympiad 1896, taking part in the sport or discipline of artistic gymnastics and shooting. At the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, Louis Zutter became the first athlete representing Switzerland to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing silver in the men’s artistic gymnastics vault event. On the same day, Zutter became the first athlete representing Switzerland to win an Olympic Games gold medal, competing in the men’s artistic gymnastics pommel horse event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Switzerland first competed at the I Olympic Winter Games Chamonix 1924, taking part in the sports or disciplines of bobsleigh, cross country skiing, figure skating, ice hockey, military patrol, Nordic combined and ski jumping. At the I Olympic Winter Games Chamonix 1924, athletes representing Switzerland won a first Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s military patrol team event.
At Beijing 2022, Switzerland enjoyed its most successful Winter Games ever with seven gold, two silver and six bronze medals helping the NOC to surpass its previous best of seven gold, two silver and two bronze from Sochi 2014. Nine of Switzerland's medals in Beijing came in Alpine skiing, including individual gold for Beat Feuz (men's downhill), Marco Odermatt (men's giant slalom), Corinne Suter (women's downhill), Lara Gut-Behrami (women's super-G), and Michelle Gisin (women's combined). Switzerland's other two gold medals both came in freestyle skiing, with Ryan Regez winning the men's ski cross ahead of compatriot Alex Fiva in second place, and Mathilde Gremaud winning the women's slopestyle in addition to claiming bronze in women's big air. Also in Beijing, the Swiss women's curling and ice hockey teams each contested their respective bronze medal matches, but lost on both occasions.
