Contracts 905 to 909 were previously referred to as the contracts for the MRT Downtown Extension. There has since been a change. All contracts concerning the MRT Downtown Extension are now referred to as the MRT Downtown LINE PHASE 1. This is reminicent of the former MRT Marina Line (which has since become Phase 1 of the MRT Circle Line). So speculation that the MRT Downtown Extension was part of the Circle Line is indeed proving to be pure speculation as its now part of its own line. Though not officially announced, this change in name when awarding contracts does prove that LTA has since firmed up its plans for the DTE, now DTL.

On a side note, another fact to ponder over is that
1. Earlier contracts have asked for contractors to be prepared for constructing a shell box for Marina Bay Station Interchange
2. Tunnels fron Bayfront to Promenade are stacked twin tunnels = 4 tunnels
3. Overrun tunnels from Bayfront towards Marina Bay Station

So it does APPEAR that there will be tracks leading from Marina Bay Station to Bayfront and on to Promenade. And this could be the Circle Line Stage 6 we are thinking about. After all, what other line seems conveniently placed to connect to Marina Bay Station, and continue on with this possible Marina Bay-Bayfront-Promenade mini line?

LTA is one confusing authority.

Why Petir station? Bukit Panjang would have made more sense I suppose, since it could be integrated with both the LRT and the bus interchange. And a new, permanent bus interchange could be built together with the MRT station. Oh well, wait for more information I suppose.
I think they are going to build a new LRT station above the so called "Petir" DTL station

So how is the line going to be built? Below Bukit Timah Canal?
It will stick to the Bukit Timah Road side mostly, instead of going under the canal.

From the LTA website:

Public Contribution to Station Naming

6. With the alignment and station locations finalised, working names based on station location have been assigned to the DTL2 stations for ease of reference. However, we will be seeking feedback and ideas from the public on the naming of the stations (excluding Little India, Newton and Botanic Gardens Stations as they are already official station names).

7. Stations names should:

* Identify the location readily so that all commuters can easily remember the names and identify the area of the station
* Illustrate the history and heritage of the station surroundings if relevant
* Reflect the multi-racial, multi-cultural character of Singapore if possible.

8. The public will be able to send their suggestions to LTA from end July 2008. More details will be provided nearer to the date.

9. The 12 DTL2 stations are:

* Rochor Station*
* Little India Station (Interchange for DTL2 and NEL)
* Newton Station (Interchange for DTL2 and NSL)
* Stevens Station*
* Botanic Gardens (Interchange for DTL2 and CCL)
* Duchess Station*
* Sixth Avenue Station*
* Blackmore Station*
* Beauty World Station*
* Hillview Station*
* Cashew Station*
* Petir Station*

* These are working names only.

Also, the above plans of the stations can be better seen here: http://www.lta.gov.sg/images/20080715-DTL2.pdf

Stage 2 of Downtown Line rail network to be ready by 2015

15 July 08

SINGAPORE: Residents living in the north-western part of Singapore can look forward to faster and more direct access to the city centre, when construction of Stage Two of the Downtown Line rail network is completed in 2015.

The 16.6 kilometre-long line comprises one depot at Gali Batu and 12 stations stretching from Rochor, along Bukit Timah Road and Bukit Panjang, to Petir.

It will have three interchange stations - located at Botanic Gardens, Newton and Little India.

Besides Petir and Rochor, other stations are situated near Cashew, Hillview, Beauty World, Blackmore, Sixth Avenue, Duchess and Stevens.

The construction of Stage Two of the Downtown Line rail network is set to begin in mid-2009.

When ready, this stage of the line is expected to cut commuter travel time by some 30 per cent. For example, the current hour-long journey from Bukit Panjang to the city will take just 40 minutes.

Stage One of the Downtown Line, from Bugis to Chinatown, will be completed by 2013. Details for the final stage, to be ready by 2016, have yet to be finalised.

The Downtown Line is part of Singapore's extensive rail network extension plan, which aims to link up most parts of the island.

Land Transport Authority's chief executive, Yam Ah Mee, said: "The expansion of the rail network and the increased density of the rail network is an important part of encouraging the public transport ridership.

"And with this plan, commuters will then have a choice to transfer between buses and trains, and with the many interchanges, they then have the choice of reaching their destination as quickly as possible."

Commuters are certainly looking forward to the new line.

"It will be better if we have the MRT station... so we can cut down the time travelling and we don't have to wake up so early," said a commuter.

"It's more convenient to travel to town from here instead of taking a bus," said another.

"Coming from the city... back to Bukit Timah, the traffic jam is incredible," said a third.

It is estimated that the S$12 billion Downtown Line (DTL) will have an average daily ridership of 500,000, of which about 180,000 commuters are expected to pass through the Stage Two line.

The LTA said land acquisitions for the DTL Stage Two will be minimal. It is limited to a vacant two-storey building at Halifax Road and two strips of land measuring 2 metres by 240 metres, along Upper Bukit Timah Road.

With the alignment and station locations finalised, the LTA is seeking suggestions from the public to come up with possible official names for the stations, excluding the three interchanges.

Station names should reflect the location, history or multi-cultural character of the site. You can send your suggestions to the LTA from end-July. Details will be provided nearer to the date.

Separately, the LTA said construction for all five stages of the Circle Line is progressing well. This line rings the city, connecting all Mass Rapid Transit Lines running into the city centre.

Transport Minister Raymond Lim toured the Esplanade Station on Tuesday. It is one of six under Stage One of the Circle Line.

The Esplanade Station is rather spacious. It spans three levels and it is one of the more connected stations in terms of linkages with surrounding developments. It has four entrances linking to the many hotels and malls around Marina Bay and Suntec City.

When fully ready, commuters can travel to locations throughout Singapore without having to pass through the city centre. The aim is to reduce crowding at City Hall and Raffles Place stations.

The Rochor station looks really really close to the next stop, Little India. I guess its no choice but to provide a connection to the NEL and also helps to deal with the Bugis crowd.

The Rochor station is beside where the former flats at Short Street used to be, which is now a piece of vacant land. Whatever comes up on that land will have the perfect integration with the DTL 2.

I am also hopeful that the new station at Beauty World will help rejuvenate that area and turn it into a mini-hub.

I think Rochor is going to be the interchange station...

Anyways, I won't be surprised if the DTL was split into 2 different lines operationally in the far future - i.e. Petir to Bayfront (and to Marina Bay?), and Promenade to Expo, with Bayfront and Promenade being the stacked interchange between the east and the west lines of the DTL (with the circle line also interchanging at Promenade)

Interesting. I wonder which line will it interchange with...
I don't think that it will be an interchange with any line. Just because it is stacked doesn't mean that it has to be an interchange. It could be due to land constraints. In the possibility that it is an interchange (as or not as a result of the stacked configuration), one can think that perhaps it will be the Thomson Line.

pardon my ignorance, but what does 'stacked' mean?
Stacked in the sense where one track is physically "stacked" or placed on top of the other. In the case of Stevens station, one level will be one platform for each direction, whereby they are directly on top of each other. So far, the stacked formation has been used exclusively at certain interchange stations to provide easy cross-platform transfer between lines. There isn't any stacked station that exists as a stand-alone station yet.

No. It is not gonna to be interchange. It would be first station to be using two platforms aligned according to stages (Stage 2 and Stage 3). DTL is not a split line. So you would just go down or up from platform to another to catch the train out.

This explains why in the DTL 3 document, there is DT21/DT21a. This is for Rochor. Very unique station.

People may be confused initially, but eventually they'll get used to it. After all, this is not the only country in the world to have a metro line which passes through a station twice or goes in a loop before continuing its journey there on.

thanks for the clarifications, jedialf and mrtfreak. i've seen the plot where the stevens station will eventually be. it's really small... guess that's why this will be stacked.

i cannot imagine what traffic will be like at the traffic junction when this station is up and running next time. how i wish there'll be underpass from dunearn road side. from the pics, it doesn't seem to be so.
