Something I started just after the new year, but failed to finish quickly - so I'm glad it is done. :3
The idea of drawing a mermaid OC came quite a while back - with a combination of Max Whittemore's comic, and another comic I stumbled onto with mermaids. So eventually, I came out with a sketch - and decided to make this come across a little bit like a lesson between a young mermaid and an older mermaid about the ecosystem in which they live. :3
Mermaid Biology
When it came time to actually drawing this, I wanted to seriously consider what a mermaid might be like anatomically, and biologically. Naturally, most would imagine a tail starting at the waist, just below the belly button - however I wanted to consider my own interpretation of mermaid anatomy to take some actual nerdy reasoning into consideration, which I feel is worth outlining with this piece. :3
The Tail
The tail of any creature does not start at the waist, but a little further down. In terms of mammals, for example, it starts beyond the hind limbs. If you were to imagine a mermaid who also had legs, the tail would start where the human tailbone starts and ends.
Genitals / Reproduction
Another thing I took into consideration quite seriously (relating to the anatomy of where the tail begins) was a mermaid's sexual capabilities based solely on reproduction and their young. If one was to believe the tail started as high on the body as the waist, having the genitalia and such of fish, one would then come to the conclusion that mermaids reproduce like fish.
However, I would argue that in reality, given that the mermaid is for the most part mammalian in design, and is essentially a human with a fish tail (who can also breath underwater, but that is another minor alteration), then those very features would require a human-like reproductive approach, as well as a human-like gestation. I cannot imagine that a being, which is essentially human, could actually grow in a small egg, separate from their mother - it is just a process and environment I don't believe the human part, which is the most part, of a mermaid could possibly develop, unless mermaids were mostly fish (although yes, I know that technically we are all fish, cladistically).
For that reason, I designed them as such so the genitals are human-based, as well as the reproductive system. The notion of a pregnant mermaid shouldn't be that difficult, anyway - marine mammals get pregnant, and sharks are fish, and they give birth to live young.
Anyhoo, I think that's about enough of me being a nerd - plz enjoy le arts. xD

Following the notion of edtropolis' S-Tails, I created what I have now come to call S-Tarri. She is slightly different from TD-Tarri in that she is regular-sized, has different ears... though still sports a larger-than-usual tail.
Guess she and S-Tails have tails in common. :whatever:
