Chery Automobile’s Executive Vice President, Li Xueyong, announced today the world’s first mass production application of pure electronic mechanical braking (EMB) technology in a car. The EMB technology is set to debut in the Exeed EX7, scheduled for launch in the first quarter of this year.

Li Xueyong highlighted the rigorous three-year development process, during which Chery’s team successfully tackled engineering challenges related to millisecond response times, precise control, and extreme reliability. This EMB system fundamentally redefines braking by eliminating traditional hydraulic pipelines, instead utilising electrical signals for direct brake actuation. This innovation is expected to shorten stopping distances, enhancing instantaneous safety for drivers.

When integrated with Chery’s upgraded “Flying Fish Chassis 3.0,” the EMB system imbues the Exeed EX7 with “intelligent nerves,” promising a higher dimension of stability and safety across all driving conditions.

The Exeed EX7, previously known as the Exeed Exlantix ET7, underwent a name change in January, alongside the Exlantix ET6, which was renamed EX6.

The Exeed EX7 was revealed in MIIT filings last November. The range-extended version of the Exlantix EX7 will feature battery capacities of 39.816 kWh and 39.9168 kWh, offering pure electric driving ranges of 182 km and 203 km, respectively. The pure electric model will be equipped with a substantial 97.682 kWh battery, providing impressive ranges of 682 km and 726 km.

Electronic Mechanical Braking of brake-by-wire is an advanced automotive braking technology that completely eliminates traditional hydraulic or pneumatic components. Instead, it transmits braking commands via electrical signals to achieve braking functionality. EMB systems represent a significant trend in the evolution of automotive braking towards electrification and intelligence, and are regarded as one of the “ultimate solutions” for automotive braking.

Editor’s comment

It’s worth noting that Li Auto’s upcoming L9 Livis will also feature a pure EMB system, which Li Auto claims to be the world’s first. This likely explains why Chery executives today announced their model as the first mass-produced vehicle equipped with EMB. After all, the Li Auto L9 Livis only appeared in the MIIT’s declaration catalogue this month, while the Exeed EX7 was listed three months prior.

Chery’s off-road sub-brand, Jetour, has released official preview images of the Zongheng G600, a luxury plug-in hybrid SUV. Moving away from the concept first seen at Auto Shanghai 2025, the official “co-creation” campaign marks the transition toward production for the Zongheng series, which Chery positions to cover price points from 400,000 yuan (58,000 USD) up to 1.5 million yuan (217,500 USD).

Visual Overview

The official teasers confirm a silhouette consistent with the Zongheng G700. Key design elements include high-clearance wheel arches, a roof-mounted luggage rack, and a vertical front fascia featuring C-shaped LED lighting. While the earlier prototype showcased digital side mirrors and hidden door handles, the production unit is expected to balance these features with hardware required for its off-road function.

Market Context

The Jetour Zongheng G600 enters the full-size luxury off-road segment, characterised by a focus on advanced hybrid technology, high ground clearance, rugged design cues, and premium interior materials often aimed at both urban and overland enthusiasts. This places it in direct competition with the GWM Tank 700 Hi4-T, which launched with a starting price of 428,000 yuan (62,050 USD). Jetour’s global sales reached 622,590 units in 2025, laying the foundation for the brand’s shift into the premium market.

Predicted Powertrain & Architecture

Based on the GAIA (Global Architecture for Intelligent All-terrain) platform shared by the Zongheng series, the G600 is expected to utilise the Kunpeng Super Performance Electric Hybrid (C-DM) system.

  • Engine: Predicted 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid-specific engine (45.5% thermal efficiency).
  • The transmission is expected to be a 2-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT).
  • The architecture will likely involve an 800V silicon carbide platform that supports high-speed power output.

Predicted Battery & Range

The G600 is anticipated to feature 800V 4C charging technology, with the brand targeting a range recovery of 400 km in 6 minutes. While battery capacity is unconfirmed, the series typically employs CATL LFP packs. The G600 is expected to offer a 1,400 km (CLTC) combined range, matching its stablemates.

Market Positioning

The Zongheng G600 is a core part of Jetour’s “Travel+” 3.0 strategy. Production will take place at Chery’s dedicated off-road plants, supporting the brand’s goal of reaching 1 million annual units by the end of 2026. Cumulative global sales for the Jetour brand surpassed 2.15 million units in early 2026.

Middle East conflict disrupts Chinese auto Exports with ripple effects to Europe

Chinese automakers are experiencing significant disruptions to their export operations as conflicts in the Middle East intensify, affecting not only direct sales to countries like Iran but also crucial transhipment routes through Dubai that serve markets across the Middle East, West Africa, and North Africa.

“Our Iranian business has completely stalled,” an export manager from a state-owned Chinese automaker told Caixin. The impact extends well beyond Iran, as another automotive trade professional explained: “Many Chinese car companies use Dubai as a transhipment hub to reach other Middle Eastern markets or West and North Africa. Now that this transit point has become unsafe, the entire operation is affected.”

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as China’s third-largest automotive export destination in 2025, following only Mexico and Russia. According to data compiled by Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association, exports to the UAE reached 567,000 vehicles last year, representing over 70% year-on-year growth. Notably, this figure far exceeds the UAE’s domestic auto sales of less than 400,000 units, highlighting Dubai’s critical role as a distribution hub.

“Dubai essentially functions as a forward warehouse,” explained one automotive trade professional to Caixin. “Many companies ship vehicles to Dubai in advance before redistributing them to final destinations. In 2025 alone, our company shipped nearly 30,000 vehicles to Dubai.” This strategy leverages Dubai’s geographic advantages, financial conveniences, and tax benefits.

Maritime shipping remains the primary and most cost-effective transportation method for Chinese automotive exports to the Middle East. Jebel Ali Port in Dubai, the region’s largest port, serves as the central hub for roll-on/roll-off vehicle transport and a key gateway for Chinese automotive exports to the Middle East.

The situation deteriorated when Jebel Ali Port was attacked in the early hours of March 1, temporarily halting operations. Although port operator DP World announced the resumption of normal operations at four berths by 6 PM the same day, shipping companies have largely suspended services, leaving ports effectively idle despite being technically operational.

The impact extends to European markets as well. The European Union represents China’s third-largest regional export market for automobiles, receiving over 1.3 million vehicles in 2025 and serving as the primary destination for China’s new energy vehicle exports. With Red Sea-Suez Canal routes under high risk, shipments must be rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope, adding 10-15 days to transit times.

According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), China exported a record 7.09 million vehicles in 2025, marking a year-on-year increase of approximately 20%. CAAM had previously forecast a modest 4.3% growth to 7.4 million units in 2026, but these projections may now need revision as regional conflicts threaten China’s overall automotive export landscape.

Chinese companies invested a lot in the region’s logistics infrastructure. As reported by People.cn, in February, just days before Israel’s attack on Iran, a shipment of Chinese automotive parts arrived at Jebel Ali Port and was transferred to an overseas warehouse in the Jebel Ali Free Zone for distribution throughout the Middle East. This warehouse, built by COSCO Shipping and Chery, occupies 19,000 square meters and aims to reduce response times for regional automotive customers from weeks to days.
