Tsaile/Wheatfields, Ariz. — The Navajo Division of Transportation (Navajo DOT) is proud to announce that Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren has officially signed a $30.1 million contract to reconstruct 7.2 miles of N12, stretching from Whiskey Creek to Wheatfields Lake. This major infrastructure project marks a significant investment in the transportation network of the Navajo Nation.
President Nygren emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “This road project will be a huge benefit to the community of Tsaile/Wheatfields and the neighboring communities and visitors. It’s a step forward in improving the quality of life and accessibility for the Navajo people.”
The type of work will include: 7.2 miles of roadway construction, grading and sub-grading, bridge replacement at Whiskey Creek, shoulder widening, installation of fencing and cattle guards, Wheatfields lake parking area, and all other miscellaneous work.
Navajo DOT Director Tom Platero echoed the President’s sentiments, highlighting the broader impact of the reconstruction. “This project will improve the transportation network on the Navajo Nation and enhance the safety of the road. It’s a critical upgrade for both daily commuters and visiting travelers.”
The project is a collaborative effort made possible through the support and partnership of several key entities. Navajo DOT extends its sincere gratitude to the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority, the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Navajo Region, Wilson & Company, Crystal and Tsaile/Wheatfields Chapters, and other stakeholders who played a vital role in reaching this milestone.
Construction is expected to begin in the coming months, with Navajo DOT committed to ensuring minimal disruption to local traffic and maximum benefit to the community upon completion.

Of the 14,200 roads, only 1,500 miles are paved. 7.5 miles will be reconstructed at a cost of $30 million. Do the math to estimate how much money it will need to repair paved roads and pave the remaining unpaved 14,000. Much of these are already in the plans and little nygren takes credit as usual. Just like US Highway 64 between Shiprock and the New Mexico/Arizona Stateline, a federally funded reconstruction road project managed by the state of New Mexico. And who is taking the credit?
On the bright side, at least a small percentage of the Rez roads are slowly being addressed.
