For the Summer Games, athletes representing Germany first competed at the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, taking part in the sports or disciplines of artistic gymnastics, athletics, road cycling, track cycling, weightlifting and wrestling. At the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896 athletes representing Germany won a first Olympic medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s artistic gymnastics parallel bars team event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Germany first competed at the II Olympic Winter Games St. Moritz 1928, taking part in the sports or disciplines of bobsleigh, cross country skiing, figure skating, ice hockey, military ski patrol, Nordic combined, ski jumping and speed skating. At the II Olympic Winter Games St. Moritz 1928 athletes representing Germany won a first Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing bronze in the men’s bobsleigh five-men event. At the IV Olympic Winter Games Garmisch Partenkirchen 1936, Christl Cranz became the first athlete representing Germany to win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal, competing in the women’s alpine skiing combined event.
At the 2022 Games in Beijing, Germany topped the medal table in bobsleigh and luge, and also in skeleton for the first time. The NOC won both skeleton gold medals on offer in Beijing, via sliders Christopher Grotheer and Hannah Neise in their respective men's and women's events. In bobsleigh, Germany claimed seven out of 12 medals in Beijing. Francesco Friedrich and Thorsten Margis triumphed in both the 2-man event and as part of the 4-man crew, just as they had done at Pyeongchang 2018, while Laura Nolte and Deborah Levi were victorious in the 2-woman event in Beijing. In luge, Germany swept all four gold medals. Johannes Ludwig and Natalie Geisenberger triumphed in their respective men's and women's singles events, while Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt won the doubles. The four luge athletes were also victorious in the mixed relay. After Beijing, Geisenberger, Arlt and Wendl are equal on six career Olympic gold medals, the most gold for any luge athlete, while Geisenberger's bronze from 2010 makes her the only athlete to have won seven Olympic luge medals. Also in Beijing, Katharina Hennig and Victoria Carl won Germany's first cross-country skiing gold medal since 2010 with victory in the women's team sprint classic, while biathlete Denise Herrmann-Wick won the women's 15km individual race. Nordic combined athlete Vinzenz Geiger won the individual Gundersen normal hill / 10km event. Germany also claimed its second ever freestyle skiing medal in Beijing, thanks to Daniela Maier's bronze in women's ski cross. In Alpine skiing, 18-year-old Emma Aicher was part of the silver medal-winning mixed team and was Germany's youngest medallist in Beijing, as well as the youngest Alpine skier from any NOC to win a medal in Beijing. The German men's ice hockey team were unable to recreate their historic run to the final at PyeongChang 2018, however, and were eliminated at the first knockout stage in Beijing.
