READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

if your filesystem doesn't have checksumming at least, it's dogshit and you aren't saving anything important on that storage. you are just an illiterate scrub.

So do you guys use anything for automation for sorting out your backups?

I use Sonarr and Radarr mostly for their ability to refolder and rename what I already have. Be awesome to do that for all my stuff.

Will review the sticky/wiki in full when I get home. I'm looking for other things to do on a windows server. Hoarding media for plex is fine, but I feel like I can be doing more? I already have adblock on a Raspberry pi

I think I'm going to start hosting public game servers with amp. I left a killing floor 2 one on without realizing that it would be available on the server browzer, but seeing randoms on it feels good. It's called cunnygarthia btw.

if I set up a game server on my pc.
Will this impact the security of my network/pc since you have to open ports and stuff like that?
>>
>>108312607
Yes. But that's only because you're adding another attack vector. If the game server on the inside end of the open port is secure then you're good. It's probably fine especially if it's some well known game like minecraft.
>>
>>108312607
It's only as secure as the application that's running on that port. Doesn't matter which/how many ports are open. You could have 1000 ports open with Valheim and be fine, or a single port with a Windows XP print server and get ass blasted.
>>
>>108312638
>>108312873
would running the server in a VM increase the security?

Yes, but minimaly unless you have that vm quarantined from the rest of your network. You could put it on its own vlan, or simply blacklist its ip from any machine that it doesn't need to connect to. Or you could, probably should, have firewalls active on all of your machines and only allow through the connections that they need. Anything that doesn't let you, iot/smart tv type stuff you put on it's own vlan.

Use different plans for different jobs or different subnet works so if someone attacked it's not on the same access as everything else.

This looks interesting. I've had a look at the dashboard and it seems simple enough, do you have any experience launching servers with mods enabled? If it can support that I'd buy, otherwise stick to editing configs in notepad all night. Had a look in their Discord too, the staff seem quite rude desu.

ZFS bros how do we cope with tons of benchmarks like these?

>>
>>108313101
I've been meaning to test out mods on minecraft. It has a file browser in the webui so it looks like you would drop the mods and configs in like any other server. I don't know about other games. I haven't interacted with the server at all but I've learned to take it for granted that devs are all massive fags. I got it because I was annoyes that every game has its own bespoke server config and management meathod. I didn't want to remember or document a bunch of different servers so I found a way to unify them. The licencing terms seem pretty reasonable. The servers are also customizeble, you can create your own kinda' like a docker file. You can also chose when installing amp weather or not it uses docker to containerize the servers.

Sounds a power rail feeding the two NICs is done and busted.
Get a new NIC, I'm sure you have atleast 1 PCIe slot open, you can even repurpose an M.2 slot
Honestly motherboard NICs should be a backup rather than your primary.
>>
>>108314689
The thing is...I have PCIe slots open but with the size of the 2 GPUs on this system, it really doesn't leave much room for additional cards. But I may be able to squeeze something inside with risers.
Regarding your last point, I actually wasn't aware of that practice. I've actually had NICs of all parts fail on me before like this, but looks like getting a PCIe NIC is the best solution. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you again.

Plex is self immolating slowly over time so I would like to swap to Jellyfin, has nice features anyway. But I can't access it from its app on TV or Phone all on LAN (haven't setup a reverse proxy for external yet). I can reach the WebUI, I can reach Plex on the same device. I can ping from it to my PC and the other way around and the gateway (proxmox host). Its running on TrueNAS in its built in Apps which is Docker and all that is in Proxmox, but there is a clear shot to it I'm fairly sure, since the UI can be accessed.

Anyone know wtf this could be?

I have never used raid, can someone explain how it works? Not the types, I mean if a drive fails, how does rebuilding work, is the raid reliant on the boot drive? Say a drive failed, and it was in like raid 5 and say the boot drive failed as well, would you use a specific program to repair it like you would gparted when trying to fix grub or is everything gone if the boot drive failed as well?
If you are in raid 1, can I just unplug both drives, put them in two different computers and both function as if they were just a normal drive, or is the raid software needed for the drives to be read?
I suppose I would be using Debian and Samba since I want to be able to use it as a desktop where it is located as well, does Debian have built in raid features, or would I need to use another piece of software (gui prefered), not set on Debian, just that it's teh default afaik.
Does the file system matter particularly?
>>
>>108315845
Oh I forgot the context is it's a NAS I'm building out of 1TB drives I've pulled from various desktops.
>>
>>108315845
The raid information is stored on the disks so you can transplant them into another computer and assemble the array.
I'm not sure if you could just plug in a raid 1 raid member and have it just work, but I bet you could assemble the raid in a degraded state and use it like that.
I don't know of any os that has full gui raid control outside of truenas, though there's probably a gui frontend for mdadm that'd do the trick. I would recommend trying to use mdadm (the linux raid utility), and samba from the command line. Find a guide. That's how I got started.
Some filesystems (zfs(basedbasedbased), and btrfs) are a filesystem and raid all in one and are their own beast to get into. If you're going to use debian just use mdadm and ext4.
Oh and mdadm should be included in debian, I've never been a debian guy, but every distrobution I've used has had it by default.

I want to make a machine dedicated solely to my porn collection that I can isolate and quarantine. I would keep all the porn and only access any porn through that machine cursed with the task. So I would remote desktop to browse any porn sites and save anything to that machine only. If I kept all the downloaded porn locally on that machine, could I stream to other machines on my network? I don’t want to store it on a NAS or have to copy it over to another machine first to play it there. I want to delegate all porn infection to that one condemned machine and ephemerally stream it to other machines without leaving any trace on those machines.
