written like weird and cynical pomo books of the 90s, underneath that hate there’s a lot to be said about how sad and listless the experience of being a teenager in general is and esp when ur shaped at a rlly young age from traumatic events that had nothing to do w u. most of the characters r just rlly sad and depressing ppl but cover that up w irony, zillenial ass vn. think nicole is like so insanely well written esp w how she deals w her trauma.

one of the only pieces of media ive consumed where it rlly gets across how sociopathic and entitled being a teenage girl is. ik this was written by a man but more often than not I felt that this was fairly empathetic towards the women in the game. think “hell is a teenage girl” type media only works for me as parody or melodrama, when aiming for realism it kind of falls entirely flat for me bc being a teenage girl feels too big to be constrained as realistic fiction. it’s why margaret (2011) hits hard for me but lady bird (2017) doesn’t

lowk huge into every single ending just being on a sliding scale of bad, there’s no true or good ending, it just all sucks lol. much like how being a teenage girl in hs sucked and much like how there’s no true experience to that or to womanhood in general. rlly rlly cynical worldview so I do get if someone doesn’t fuck w it but for me it worked so wonderfully bc wasn’t scared to show realistic scenarios and conversations just done through a v heightened way

-finally did read the comics after watching the series and i think they're both like pretty expertly done. esp in terms of characterization of knives, character is almost an afterthought in the movie where as she's rlly focal in everything else and for good reason. so much of the comic is about how everyone is looking to take advantage and manipulate her mostly bc of her age. shit made me miss old friends and rethink past actions.

-why in the movie is the knee joke about the only lesbian character and how it basically boils down to haha a cismale made a lesbian cum hahahah like thats fucking weird esp considering in the comic that's a joke about envy like why was it changed to roxie edgar wright ur fucking weird dude!!
-think the series might be the better version though, think it's rlly smart in how it goes about reckoning w a problematic past and updating it for modern audiences and like how one can right their wrongs, real good shit tbh.

my laptop is literally so dinky that I had to play this in the lowest resolution available which tbh w the wavy and v colorful graphics and vhs filter improved on the games aesthetic and overall feel. felt like how it was supposed to be played.

feel like the artist most comparable to doseone and vellman’s vibe and worldview is late career korine. like his work post spring breakers, dior commercials and all. undeniably corporate and clean while still holding on to some form of street cred/punk outlook. more or less a parodies of the modern world and all of its problems but one that treats all of its characters and their problems w love and affection, totally sincere and serious despite the playful tone. everything is so heightened, james franco playing everytime by britney on the piano while teenage girls holding guns surround him and a projectionist saying the state of cinema is a repeating violent gif of a doberman w a gun is the exact same vibe and outlook on the world. good shit, looking forward to the next doseone/vellman game and also aggro drift !!

world’s first and maybe only hippy game. very slow and dazey, even sludgey. usually cannot vibe w the vast majority of platformers bc my reflexes are absolutely fucked and I just don’t fuck w games that are challenging or fast like rlly at all. skill issue or how about more aptly a preference issue. these last couple years I’ve been trying to take everything more leisurely, to calm down and take things not just in stride but w patience too. this game is like that idea in video game form which is rlly fucking cool. and bc it’s so slow and tired I didn’t fall off of it like I do w metroid or mario, those are cool games sure but idk idgaf bc I’m eepy and everything makes me so nervous I don’t need games to make me nervous too lol. cool vacation beachy fucking vibes here too even in the darker worlds like it all feels like one small little adventure, a nice sightseeing tour. idek what I’m trying to say but I live in an area most would consider like a vacation hotspot but so often it’s loud and aggressive in a way I don’t vibe w unfortunately, I like playing short breezy adventures bc there’s smth very no thoughts head empty about it and I like that. was playing this at like ten am the other day bc got woken up by a storm and couldn’t fall asleep for a few hours but after playing this for like half an hour/2 levels I got drowsy and tired and fell tf back asleep for a bit. shit made me wanna go to the beach and get an arizona tea and maybe like some sushi and relax and look at the waves crash into one another, I haven’t done that in a while and I’m going to later this week :-)

tbh I don’t understand how ppl can write so many words about this game and make so many vids about it idk ig im built diff. not saying that as like a dig either, I listened to a few of those essays and thought they all were rlly well made but idgaf about the mechanics of this or how wario handles or w/e. I got everything I need out of this bc the first level I played has maybe one of the cutest songs I’ve ever heard and the last level I played has a stoned looking dragon painted on a wall that looks like it belongs in a mini golf place

have been getting rlly into 5th wave emo as of recent bc honestly have listened to a lot of older emo bands and i wanted to see what the new scene is like. so much of it barely even resembles emo but behind the glitchiness and screams is a very real sense of emotion though it’s often times incomprehensible and not transcribed, you can feel what the artists are feeling, the passion and the pain is always there. and the album covers are so so gorgeous and reflect this as well, pulling from every piece of internet esoterica and history to make these covers that look lived in. crypt underworld reminds me of a lot of the best of 2020’s emo , it’s pulling from every facet of internet history and archaic 90s video game documentation to make something truly dense and incomprehensible. idk I found my house’ doomwad usage of memes and figures like shrek to be rlly fucking annoying and steve buscemi how do you do fellow kids core. it consistently took me out of the new sincerity storytelling when juxtaposed w deeply ironic images. but I was not annoyed seeing pixelated matthew lilliard shaggy or I love lucy here, this is a game that builds on every single thing that came before it, not just video games. games and the culture of them, experimental videos and movies and shows, you can feel and also see everything this was inspired by within the game. I never felt lost or alone and confused in lsd dream emu or other random 90s ps1 walking sims, I felt like I always saw the most of it pretty early on but because this is building off of decades of games similar to it I never felt like I saw all of crypt underworld. I was always able to uncover something more. it’s the final video game bc it’s taking inspiration from every game before it.

(kind of a rambly review whatever fuck it lol. got way too high last night after crying too much and was playing this while watching tv w my boyfwend. my eyes felt dry asf and burned which feels appropriate for the type of game this is. if anyone checks this out I think u should naturally explore all the different worlds here before concentrating on locked doors. was rlly fucking confused on how to open the doors until hours in but I was able to appreciate the visuals and designs of the world without worrying about how to open the doors. idk how similar the gameplay loop here is to prev. games by the same dev but u should kill creatures take whatever u come across like meat/bones/seeds sell them to the pilgrim inside the labyrinth use the money u got to buy the prize capsules across from her and rinse and repeat to get more keys from capsules. it’s a very charming and like dazey and calming loop but it’s also hella confusing and I wanted to leave this here for anyone that’s as much of a ditz as I am. this game slays <3)
