For the Summer Games, one athlete representing Italy first competed at the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, taking part in the sport of shooting. At the Games of the II Olympiad Paris 1900, Giangiorgio Trissino became the first athlete representing Italy to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing silver in the mixed equestrian long jump event. At the same Games edition, George Trissino also became the first athlete representing Italy to win an Olympic gold medal, competing in the mixed equestrian high jump event and finishing in a tie for first place. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Italy first competed at the I Olympic Winter Games Chamonix 1924, taking part in the sports or disciplines of bobsleigh, cross country skiing, military patrol and ski jumping. At the V Olympic Winter Games St. Moritz 1948, Nino Bibbia became the first athlete representing Italy to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s skeleton individual event.

Italy won 17 medals at Beijing 2022, which was the NOC's largest total medal haul since Lillehammer 1994. The NOC's Beijing medal tally included two golds - curlers Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner made history for Italy by winning the NOC's first curling medal after their triumph in the final of the mixed doubles event, while short track speed skater Arianna Fontana won gold in the women's 500m event, just as she had done at PyeongChang 2018. Fontana also took silver in the women's 1500m event and in the 2000m mixed relay, making her the only Italian to win three medals in Beijing. In addition to Fontana, fellow short track speed skaters Pietro Sighel, Yuri Confortola and Andrea Cassinelli also picked up more than one medal in Beijing, with all three claiming bronze as part of the men's 5000m relay team and silver in the mixed 2000m relay. In speed skating, Francesca Lollobrigida claimed silver medals in the women's 3000m and mass start events at her third Games, while snowboarder Omar Visintin also picked up two medals at his third Games, claiming bronze in men's snowboard cross and silver in team snowboard cross alongside Michela Moioli. One other Italian won more than one medal in Beijing - Alpine skier Federica Brignone, who took silver in women's giant slalom and bronze in the women's Alpine combined. Also in Beijing, cross-country skier Federico Pellegrino took silver in the men's sprint, just as he did at PyeongChang 2018, while luge slider Dominik Fischnaller claimed bronze in men's singles after finishing fourth at PyeongChang 2018 and sixth at Sochi 2014. Biathlete Dorothea Wierer also added a bronze in the women's 7. 5km sprint, having previously won bronze in mixed relay events at both the 2018 and 2014 Games.
