Guys, all four major AI companies; Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and xAI have contracts with the U.S. government, particularly through the Department of Defense. In July 2025, the DoD awarded each of these companies individual contracts valued at up to $200 million to provide advanced AI capabilities for national security purposes, including warfighting, intelligence, and enterprise systems.
Yeah but the shape of it is different per company than the 200 mil grant. See OpenAI's May 20 senate hearing where both Cruz, Altman and Smith pushed acceleration, see Anthropics long standing contracts with the govt. It's not as cut and dry as they "all got 200 million," but I do think you are squaring off a good point that no one here is clean.
I’ve been trying to tell people this for the better part of a year. The whole concept of Anthropic is “AI might end us all..which is why WE are the only ones who can be trusted to build it”. It’s such a ridiculous ethos.
I mean it's really not surprising at all, none of these top AI companies actually care about regular people, it's just all about profit and control. Our only form of protest would be a mass boycott/cancellation but AI has already become so mainstream and integrated into people's lives/work that a boycott would never work anyways.
If you read Dario's statement objecting to the DoD, he said quite clearly that he was quite happy for his AI model to be used by America to win wars. He just doesn't think they're smart enough yet for fully autonomous murdering, with the key word being "yet". He also doesn't support AI powered mass surveillance of US citizens, because that's illegal.
But he doesn't mind Claude being used for everything else in the US war machine. Maybe the DoD (Dept of war) will just use ChatGPT for mass surveillance and claude for programming.
I don't think there's any secret drive here for power and money.
Too bad GPUs are so expensive, or else I would be running a few models on a dedicated system, as long as AI requires enormous amounts of GPU power, there's no stopping those who hold a monopoly over the best GPUs
Did someone confirm that Anthropic has agreed to mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons after all?
Because if not, I don't see what is so hilarious. People were responding to Anthropic taking a stance on those two issues in particular. Anthropic was already working very closely with the federal government before all of this.
Honestly though I think people were really responding to Anthropic telling the Trump administration to eat shit (even if it was just a negotiation tactic).
Why do I feel like this whole sub right now is bunch of astroturfing by both sides. I know that’s kinda reddit in general these days but this sub has been kind of a shitshow lately with the ChatGPT/Claude stuff.
I’m betting people who know actual things all over the us government finally filtered that up to dingus and they realized how massive of an undertaking it would be to rip all of it out and how much it would cost.
Anthropic, ChatGPT, Gemini, xAI — they all have contracts with the US government it's obviously. And there're no good alternatives to replace them. If you really don't want to support the "war machine" then just self-host it.
I represent financial institutions and big tech. Right now, everyone’s looking at a six month timeframe to get Anthropic out of their stacks unless this is fixed. Every big company does business with the US government or provides products or services to others who do. They cannot use a debarred provider or it risks their own status.
So I can promise one of two things will happen: (1) Anthropic will do a deal with the US government, or (2) Anthropic will become a distressed asset and be purchased at a 70% discount or greater by another enterprise software company who already works with the US government. Top contenders are Google which owns 14% and Amazon which owns >20% IIRC.
This isn’t a matter of ideology. No enterprise software provider can get debarred by the US government and survive.
...weren't their concerns pretty narrow? And they were already doing a lot that didn't violate the two things they called out? This just feels like the government backing down after trying to force them to concede. And OpenAI not meeting their standards.
All of the virtue signaling Claude supporters the past week are super quiet right now. Any of them going to admit they were wrong? Nah, probably not even a single one.

I’m just waiting for the mergers and takeovers to start happening.

From a pretty well known tech reporter who is probably the worlds biggest OpenAI hater:
“Dario Amodei Is An Even Bigger Liar Than Sam Altman, He’s Just Better With The Media”
That’s a pretty damming statement given the source
I’ve been trying to tell people this for the better part of a year. The whole concept of Anthropic is “AI might end us all..which is why WE are the only ones who can be trusted to build it”. It’s such a ridiculous ethos.
Anthropic works with Palantir…..
This has been pretty clear to a lot of us already
A shame people are demonizing open ai for being pretty much the same thing as every ai company
QuitGPT “users” won’t ever think they got played like a fiddle, and will keep mentioning red lines
Meanwhile…

Always can push for open source models!

I just assumed it was all the CIA anyways🤷♂️
Mfs gonna uninstall and go back to ChatGPT for nth time
Except when you start to use Claude and realise it doesn’t sound like a sycophantic cringe bot like ChatGPT
I started using Claude this week and it’s night and day to ChatGPT. ChatGPT got weird
Open source and local models
Yeah it’s a laugh riot watching ai companies compete to be the first to help build a better panopticon.

Hilarious
the show must go on! 😂 it’s all theatre.

So are we planning to cancel our ClaudeAI memberships and subscribe to OpenAI enmasse next week?
Ok..... So is Grok, ChatGPT, or Anthropic in cahoots with the military?? Which one?
I guess the answer is yes.
