Spring Ball Primer: Way Too Early Offensive Depth Chart

Spring ball is nearly here and with that comes a depth chart projection

Sammy MoraSammy Mora

March is here, which means it is officially the month when spring football is set to start for the Utah football team. Morgan Scalley enters his first season as head coach with a mix of returners and new additions from the prep ranks and the transfer portal for this season. While it remains to be seen if Scalley will bring back depth charts for this team, we decided to take a stab at what it could look like two weeks from the start of spring football.

2027 Top247 rankings: Showcase events yield new five-stars, others make major moves in spring refresh

Spring practices for college football teams might be starting this week, but that doesn't mean high school recruiting will take a back seat.

Spring practices for college football teams might be starting this week, but that doesn't mean high school recruiting will take a back seat. In fact, it's quite the opposite. With the NCAA's dead period now over, the race to build the foundation of top-ranked recruiting classes is here. The next few weeks are reserved for junior days while the spring evaluation period will set the stage for June's official visits and the eventual flurry of commitments.

Who are the coveted prospects? The updated Top247 for the class of 2027 hopes to provide some answers.

SEE THE FULL TOP247 PLAYER RANKINGS

After giving our rankings a mid-junior-season audit in October, we once again made a ton of changes to the top of the board Wednesday. Fueling all the movement are state playoffs runs, major all-star games and early stops on the offseason camp/tournament circuit.

While the past few months have certainly allowed us to get more familiar with the class, it's still relatively early in the cycle — and that means more changes are coming. The first 32-player, five-star field for 247Sports are set to be released in May before a late-summer update will lead into the all-important senior seasons.

SHOWCASE EVENTS YIELD NEW FIVE-STARS

For the second straight year, the Navy All-American Bowl, Under Armour All-America Game and Polynesian Bowl mixed underclassmen with upperclassmen and that once again provided an invaluable data point as plenty of soon-to-be seniors competed in a best-on-best setting. Those three events along with breakout performances elsewhere have produced four new five-stars.

6. Jalen Brewster, DL (Texas Tech commit): Brewster was the story of the Under Armour All-America Game, at least when it came to the juniors. A stout and powerful 3-technique, Brewster was a constant disruptor during practices and just as much of a nuisance in the actual game as he was credited with one sack, one pressure and one tackle for loss.

A special athlete for someone already carrying 300 pounds, Brewster pairs elite get-off with exceptional balance. He can wedge his way through gaps but also generate easy up-field push with his brute strength. Brewster is recovering from a shoulder injury, but he's one of the biggest difference makers in the entire class when he's healthy.

8. KJ Green, EDGE: Green finished his senior season with 18 sacks, and a solid overall showing at the Polynesian Bowl. His ability to dip around tackles and flatten the corner at his age is rare. So are the change-of-direction skills, which are echoed by top-flight testing markers: 4.32 seconds in the short shuttle, 7.23 second in the three-cone drill.

The biggest knock at this juncture for Green will be his weight as he was under 215 pounds this past summer, but in-person evaluations suggest that he should have no issues eventually carrying 245 pounds or more. He has also shown that he can play through contact. Green is set to announce a commitment Aug. 8 on CBS Sports.

10. Donte Wright, CB (Georgia commit): Wright was a standout performer at both The Opening Los Angeles and Battle Miami. A coverage ace for a storied Long Beach Poly program as a junior, Wright stays on top of routes with his smooth transitions and can recover like few others with his track speed. He anticipates breaks, battles with his hands and isn't afraid to mix it up in run support either.

It's going to be hard for anyone to unseat John Meredith III for the title of CB1 in the class, but Wright is working himself into the conversation with his lanky frame and top gear. He's now slotted as the No. 1-ranked prospect in California.

12. David Gabriel Georges, RB: Georges joins Georgia commit Kemon Spell as early five-star running backs in the class. It's not often that we have ball carriers this high up in the Top247, but both Georges and Spell are different. They have chances to be offensive centerpieces for College Football Playoff contenders.

Georges, this past fall's MaxPreps National Player of the Year, is an uptempo runner with a rocked-up frame who can power between the tackles and then bounce runs to the outside. The Canadian transplant averaged 10.3 yards per carry as a junior, rushing for 1,756 yards and 27 touchdowns. That included a 431-yard, seven-touchdown outing in Tennessee's Division II Class AAA semifinals.

QUARTERBACK PICTURE CLEARING UP

Elijah Haven (Photo: USA TODAY Sports)

Elijah Haven remains the No. 1-ranked quarterback and the lone five-star passer in the Top247 following a stellar finish to his junior campaign. The Gatorade Player of the Year in Louisiana set a state record with 73 total touchdowns (62 passing, 11 rushing) while leading his school to a 13-1 record and its first state championship since 2004.

A super-sized signal-caller at 6-foot-5, 215 pounds that can finish above the rim, Haven showed noticeable growth while targeting the intermediate parts of the field as an 11th grader. He still has to keep improving the timing and decision-making, but he's got best-in-class traits and one of the best resumes in the class.

While Haven sits in pole position, a few other quarterbacks are already firmly in the five-star conversation.
