Really not much to say to uninformed takes like this other than “do better”. Both in the research on what you’re writing about but also like, go build something better. Deploy it, scale it, grow it. I would happily concede to someone actually building a better decentralized social network.

I have a lot friends that are all in on atproto and Bluesky. I think that's a mistake so I wrote a blog post about it. Don't hate me. I genuinely do care. kevinak.se/blog/be-wary...

It's extra hilarious how most of the bad arguments in there would be dispelled by asking any chatbot a single question about atproto
One reason I'll be at Atmosphere this year is because, watching recordings from last year, I was blown away how mature the discussion was Lots of "this is complex & full of compromises, so let's talk about choices" - and zero naive "my latest algo solves civics by insisting everyone think like me"
Is it not the case that the way it is currently built, most users end up on Bluesky and that most users will be toast if Bluesky turns hostile?
That is not the case. The system is designed around a future where the company becomes the adversary. We talk about this quite a lot.
So how does the system handle a case like this when Bluesky becomes adversarial and decides "nah, we're not going to let users access their rotation keys"?
Bluesky can’t refuse you access to something they don’t have. You generate and store your rotation keys yourself.
This is only true for those that are not using Bluesky as their PDS host. atproto.com/specs/account "...Users should take special care to select and assess their PDS host when they delegate management of their identity to that host (eg, when using a did:plc)."
Nope, this very account is currently hosted by Bluesky and has a rotation key registered.
Ok, let me rephrase: every user except the ones that have gone out of their way to use a separate rotation key, which in practice is 99.99999% of users 🤷‍♂️
Sorry, but this does not make much sense to me.
I don't know how to explain it in any other way. Bluesky holds the signing and rotation keys for the vast majority of their users.
Correct, but that’s beside my point.
Man. I hope all those data analysts don't get hold of my disappointment with 21st Century filmmaking. I might be ruined.
