Wuguttans were a species of large, deadly creatures with black fur found on the planet Kashyyyk. Due to the difficulty in capturing them, zoologists were unable to determine if they were more feline or ursine. In 228 BBY, the Nihil spy Nan Hague noticed a wuguttan outside the window of her hut on Kashyyyk. The same wuguttan was later attacked by the sentient carnivorous plants known as the Drengir, and killed two of them before falling to them itself.

Biology and appearance[]

Wuguttans were a species of large creatures with black fur. Zoologists disagreed on whether they were more feline or ursine, and were unable to definitively determine how to classify them due to the difficulty in capturing them.[1]

Behavior[]

Wuguttans were deadly creatures, and attempts to capture them resulted in the deaths of several dozen zoologists. They were capable of quickly moving through tree limbs.[1]

History[]

Wuguttans were found on the Mid Rim forest planet Kashyyyk and were among the many dangerous creatures the planet's native Wookiees warned their children about.[1] By 228 BBY,[2] several dozen zoologists had died in attempts to capture wuguttans, after which scientific interest moved on to less dangerous creatures.[1]

That year,[2] while the Nihil spy Nan Hague was staying in a Wookiee village on Kashyyyk, she saw a dark shadow flicker across the window of her hut and turned to see a wuguttan darting through tree limbs before it become hidden by leaves. Hague did not recognize the creature, but correctly assumed it was one of Kashyyyk's many dangerous denizens and blamed the feelings of unease and fear she had been feeling on it startling her.[1]

The wuguttan then neared a group of Drengir, a type of sentient carnivorous plant. The Drengir, who already felt withered from a previous encounter with the Wookiees and members of a Jedi team, were unaware of the species' history, but sensed the danger the wuguttan posed. Although they were aware they could find easier prey if they continued to search, the Drengir felt compelled to attack the wuguttan as it approached. The wuguttan killed two of the Drengir and clawed a branch of their leader, the Great Progenitor, so badly she could barely move before it was killed. Despite its large size, it provided little sustenance after being divided among all of the Drengir present. While looking down at the wuguttan's remains, the Great Progenitor felt a compulsion to bury what was left of it in shallow soil to prepare an enriched bed for the Drengirs' seeds to take root in.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

A wuguttan appeared in the 2025 young-adult novel The High Republic: Into the Light, written by Claudia Gray as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase III.[3]

The implementation of the Guardian Protocols, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia places in 229 BBY, took place one week after Starlight Beacon's fall according to The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 1. As The High Republic Adventures (2023) 16, which features the Stormwall going down, takes place one year and a few months after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, it must be set in 228 BBY. The events of The High Republic: Tears of the Nameless also take place in 228 BBY per the reasoning here. As The High Republic: Into the Light states its events occur after the events of Tears of the Nameless and before the Stormwall goes down, they must also take place in that year.
