"There aren't that many trans people designing tabletop RPGs, Tumblr just gives you a skewed impression" buddy, I have recruited collaborators for past projects from tabletop RPG forums whose population runs 90% straight and male and still ended up having to make last-minute corrections to the credits page because one of those collaborators came out as trans in between the initial submission of proofs to the printer and the final approvals. Possibly Tumblr is not the community that's giving us skewed metrics.

I saw your ask about eight leggie horses and I gotta know-- what kind of weird horse words would crop up for Pegasi, d'you think? I imagine there'd be crossover from ships for directional things, but... maybe stuff from hawking? cuz I get a lot of my Pegasus headcanon from @skycowboys, but more info from other horse folks is good I think.

If you’re thinking about English specifically, the British Isles are decent sailors, but the finer points came later in the culture/language than horse-obsession. Anglo-Saxon words around sailing do exist, and you could probably mine Norse vocab for more good stuff, but the really complex and fabulous tall-ship stuff entered English later. Based on absolutely nothing and not being a linguist, I think a lot of flying-horse terms would have started in Anglo-Saxon, with a basic fascination with the local animal.

and then they’d really be mixing it up with French and crystallising in Medieval English, with various invasions and new overlords, and flying horses being used in the conflicts. There might be a few little Celtic holdouts. So - yes, great idea for navigation, but I would personally aim to mine Norse vocab rather than tall-ships for flying horse navigation words if you wanted to imply a long and deep relationship.

I do think falconry terms would come up a lot! Certainly with behaviours. In addition to horse-specific behaviours that get their own words, like shying, bolting, cribbing, rearing - I suggest that flying horses would add rousing (fluffing up feathers) warbling (stretching the wings up over the back) winnowing (flapping wings without flying) and crabbing (mildly scuffling with each other over food.) it would be especially immersive to come up with reasonable new behaviours of their own for winged horses, and vaguely Old English names for them.

Oh falconry terms for pegasi is a GREAT idea! I've always stayed in equestrian realm, since that's what I know. I have a whole topic to deep dive on now!

The Art Gallery has gotten a facelift!

I redesigned the gallery page to best show off the wonderful work everyone has been creating. And it's... well, you'd better go look.

Here's a couple little teasers for you...

All previously submitted pieces should now be in the new Art Gallery.

If you've created anything using the repository references, you can have it featured on the Art Gallery / community fridge too! Submissions are currently (and should always be) open.

You can message me here about including your art on the page, but there's now a snazzy new submissions form too.

Art of all skill levels, styles, and mediums is accepted as long as it is a) safe for work and b) not made using Generative AI.

So far we've got practice sketches, clay sculptures, OC's, linocuts, woodburning, doodles, gel pen art, collages, and even a snow sculpture! What will you add?

(Seriously, let me show off the cool stuff you make, it's my pleasure).

one thing i love about OTGW is that despite being a story about The Unknown and all the terrible dangers that lurk in it, the story’s main message is “things are rarely as scary as they seem.” the Woodsman scared the boys repeatedly, but he was really a good man trying to help them and in fact saved their lives multiple times. the inhabitants of Pottsville seemed ominous and ill-intentioned, but stopping to speak to them showed that they were benign folks who just came off a little creepy. the “fearsome gorilla” was just a man in a suit and the “ghost” was just an unexpected roommate. even Auntie Whispers, a terrifying witch-woman who seemed to be abusing her ward, turned out to love Lorna and was only trying to protect her from evil forces—and it was Wirt facing the evil spirit head on that finally exorcised it for good.

even the main characters’ arcs reflect this: Wirt is scared of rejection and humiliation from Sara and Jason Funderberker, but after returning to the real world, Sara is more than receptive toward him and Jason Funderberker isn’t even an issue. Beatrice is too ashamed to face her family after turning them all into bluebirds, but at the end of the story it’s such a non-issue for them that they only use the incident to affectionately tease her and everybody is perfectly happy.

and it all cumulates in the final episode when Wirt and Greg finally face the Beast. for the entire series the Beast has been a looming figure of evil, something dark and strange and unimaginably powerful that you never, ever want to meet. but when Wirt actually dares to face the monster head on, not running or hiding or falling for its tricks, he destroys the Beast in less than a minute! the monster that’s been terrorizing the woods for who knows how long, preying on fearful travelers and eating the souls of its victims, is extinguished by simply blowing out a lantern.

OTGW hammers it home that as much as it scares you, you have to face the Unknown in order to move forward. maybe its scary. maybe it will suck. but when you do confront your problems directly, it’s almost as never as bad as it seems.

I remember one time I was doing an ADHD evaluation with a kid who had asked to go to the bathroom like 3 times during the 30-ish minute part of the interview where we asked his mom questions, so I knew that was his go-to excuse when bored. We get started on the WISC-V after the interview and within 30 seconds of vocab starting he asks if he can go to the bathroom, and I say:

“No.”

And this kid rolls his eyes because DUH and he says “Why not?” all cranky-styles, so I said

“Because you don’t need to go to the bathroom, you’re bored and you need to move. If you need to move, tell me and I’ll let you know if we’re at a part of the test where we can pause. Like, for example, we can pause right now if you wanna race me around the building.”

And this kids face fucken LIT up. We did three laps around the outside of the building and came back in and he finished like 3 subtests and asked if he could move so we got up and tried to see how high we could jump for 3 minutes and the finished the rest of the assessment with one bathroom break. And that was all it took tbh, this kid was SO capable he just needed to move and hadn’t been allowed to do so before. I also like making people mad by pointing out that I know what they’re up to, then just giving them permission to do the thing they were sneakily trying to do in the first place. It’s like being affectionately annoying and it’s part of how I connect to others.

sortahawkwardReblogged honey-wine-and-timecapsystFollowI love animation history and one of the things that always baffled me was how did animators draw the cars in 101 Dalmatians before the advent of computer graphics?GIF by madeleineenglandAny rigid solid object is extremely challenging for 2D artists to animate because if one stray line isn’t kept perfectly in check, the object will seem to wobble and shift unnaturally.Even as early as the mid 80’s Disney was using a technique where they would animate a 3D object and then apply a 2D filter to it. This practice could be applied to any solid object a character interacts with: from lanterns a character is holding, to a book (like in Atlantis), or in the most extreme cases Cybernetic parts (like in Treasure Planet). But 101 Dalmatians was made WAY before the advent of this technology. So how did they do the Cruella car chase sequence at the end of the film? The answer is so simple I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me sooner:They just BUILT the models and painted them white with black outlines 🤣 That was the trick. They’re not actually 2D animated, they’re stop motion. They were physical models painted white and filmed on a white background. The black outlines become the lineart lines and they just xeroxed the frame onto an animation cel and painted it like any other 2D animated frame. That’s how they did it! Isn’t that amazing? It’s such a simple low tech solution but it looks so cool in the final product.GIF by madeleineenglandtranshuman-priestess@transparent-plastic-robotgirl check it outquasi-normalcyAnother little detail I notice; it looks like they've marked the tires so the animators can keep their rotation constant from frame to frame.5321,77431,265

At the same time, Beijing promised to exempt people from taxes on childcare services — nurseries, kindergartens, and other services meant to make raising a child easier. For decades, China punished its citizens for having “extra” children, pushing the country into a “low fertility trap.” One continuity remains, however: neither during the period of the “one child policy” nor during the current push to boost fertility has Beijing listened to women. In response to state pressure, Chinese women have become more radicalized — and they increasingly prefer not to have children at all.sprinkledsaltMore from the article:In its attempts to stimulate population growth, the government completely ignores women’s perspectives, which only worsens the situation. In the article “China’s Low Fertility Rate from the Perspective of Gender and Development” (2021), researchers Ji Yuxiang and Zheng Zhou note that domestic labor still falls almost entirely on women, even as they are expected to build careers. Motherhood results in slower career advancement for women, a 30–40% drop in income, and additional burdens at home. These losses cannot be offset by a 10,000-yuan payment. In October 2020, Chinese social media began circulating a translation of the article “We Are Not Flowers, We Are a Fire”, which sets out the principles of the South Korean radical feminist movement known as “6B4T.” This ideology calls for rejecting heterosexual relationships, marriage, childbearing, emotional labor for men, and adherence to beauty standards. The name is a direct reference to the Confucian code of gender relations “Three Obediences and Four Virtues,” which places women in a subordinate position, requiring them to obey their father before marriage, their husband during marriage, their son in widowhood, and to preserve “moral purity,” modesty, and domestic skills. The radical approach of 6B4T contrasts with the ideas of earlier women’s-rights movements in China, note researchers Shu Li and Yijia Gu of the University of Melbourne. For women aged 18–30, refusing marriage and choosing voluntary childlessness have become a way to avoid economic and psychological pressure. Young women mock official slogans and government incentive programs on social media: on Douyin (China’s TikTok) and Weibo, hashtags such as “don’t marry and don’t give birth to live in peace” (不婚不育保平安), “better to invest in yourself than in a child” (生孩子不如养自己) and “being childfree is fine” (丁克也很好) are popular. Against such sentiments, the introduction of a 13 percent tax on contraceptives looks more like an act of desperation than an effective measure. It's just incredible how this keeps happening in all different parts of the world. Governments genuinely can't believe that women are deciding that no, they don't want to do the vast majority of labor in a family and have their careers get derailed by becoming mothers, and flimsy compensation from the government won't change their minds. I've written before that people refuse to consider that even with all help and opportunities available to them, some women will still never want children, but as others have said repeatedly, if people really want modern women to have more children? Then they'd attack the patriarchal system that leaves women earning less money on average than men when they have children, and that tells men it's fine for them to treat their wives like domestic servants and never clean a fucking dishAnd then the article ends with this added misogyny:Birth restrictions helped entrench this practice: if a family was allowed only one child, that child had to be a boy. As a result, the number of sex-selective abortions using ultrasound diagnostics increased. In the 1990s–2000s, some provinces saw the ratio of newborn boys to girls reach 120 to 100 (the biological norm is about 105 to 100). According to estimates by demographers, by the 2020s China had more than 30 million “surplus” men. Entire “bachelor villages” emerged, where residents over 30 had never married. The gender imbalance has increased risks for women across the region. Human Rights Watch reports that each year thousands of women and girls are taken from Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam to China, where they are sold as “brides” and kept in domestic servitude. In Cambodia, according to the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, criminal networks have formed that abduct women for the Chinese “market.” Recruiters promise jobs or “marriage to a well-off man,” but in reality the women become victims of traffickers. Cases of “brides” being resold from one family to another are widespread. Overall, according to the 2023 Global Slavery Index, about 5.8 million people are living in modern slavery in China. A generation raised amid intense economic competition, expensive housing, and the one-child norm increasingly sees motherhood as a form of bondage and rejects it. The state, however, continues by inertia to rely on the same tools it used forty years ago, viewing women’s bodies merely as a means of reproducing the population. But it is no longer possible to return women to the model of “laborers by day, mothers of the nation by night.” Efforts to increase pressure only fuel resistance, as in the case of 6B4T. And the more radically the authorities try to control fertility, the more painful the side effects become.157227
