in all seriousness though a fandom doesn't die when there's no new episodes or games or "content" to play with and it doesn't die because people aren't as loud as the day it first came out either. if you're still creating then the fandom is alive. if your mutual who has since moved on still reblogs a post about it every four months then the fandom is alive. if there is even one person out there still engaging in, creating for, or just enjoying that show or that game or those characters, then the fandom is alive.
"fresh content" isn't the soul of a fandom. you are.

We've gone from Tanuma being distressed that Natsume never tells him anything to Natsume providing him a daily update about how the yokai are terrorizing him this time. I'm happy for them

My thoughts have been swirling around the lizard recently. Specifically two questions come to mind:
To what extent do others perceive the lizard tattoo?
How does Natori experience the lizard tattoo?
We know that people with the ability to see yokai can see the lizard. However, in the anime, the lizard's appearance is usually accompanied by a sound effect, like skittering or slithering (idk if there is any indication of a sound effect in the manga). Is it actually making a noise or is the sound just used to immerse the audience into the strangeness of the mark? Could people who perceive yokai hear it moving if they listened closely?
I'm also wondering if Natori can somehow feel the lizard crawling on his skin. This seems less likely given the way that he describes discovering it when he was a child (visually noticing it). The thought of him feeling it crawling constantly is actual nightmare fuel to me lol.
Anyhoo, I might be overthinking it, but happy to hear other theories or thoughts on Natori's tattoo.

Natori's mask is an idealized version of a man. Not even an idealized version of himself, but something else entirely. As much a character as any other he plays. Natori doesn't believe any of the stuff he spouts- or if he does it's only skin deep. It's someone he would like to be. Someone nicer and friendlier and good with people. Someone desirable. It's a heavy weight that he willingly carries every day because anything is better than looking in the mirror and seeing himself
Matoba would tell you he doesn't have a mask, and he might even believe it. Mask? What mask? Maybe there was one, once. He was too young to put it on, so his parents did it for him until he could tie it on himself. "The Matoba Heir", "The Strongest Exorcist Family", "Hunters", "Hunted". These are heavy titles, many would drown under them. But now their weight keeps Matoba grounded. Who is he without them? Some stranger, probably. If there is a mask, he has grown to fit it perfectly. It is him. Not even he knows what's underneath.

hc that people just assume Natsume doesn’t speak Japanese as a first language when they meet him but then they actually have a conversation with him and he talks like a weird mix of city dialect + ancient prose that’s genuinely baffling. Like why is does foreign-looking high schooler talk like he’s from the Heian era.

you said you like tanuma/natsume and heartfelt, emotional themes so i went very symbolic with this, haha. i really love the idea of using imagery from the fish pond in tanuma's backyard to represent these two and their dynamic, so that became the concept i ran with. i'll explain my whole thought process below, but in the meantime i hope you like it! 💖

But I wanted to say what I wanted to say when I saw the episode:I CANNOT believe it took 83 chapters/7 seasons for us to learn Natsume and Kitamoto are the kind of book nerds who will get excited discovering a used book store and say stuff like "I bet there are hidden treasures here" and "wow it's so irresistible" THIS IS IMPORTANT INFO YUKI MIDORIKAWA MA'AM i needed to know this earlier!I guess now that I think of it there have been times Natsume's just reading somewhere, like the time he got nailed in the head with a ball. And I can see how liking reading could have come about, lonely children love the sweet embrace of the library (source: was a lonely child who basically lived at my school library).But yeah, Kitamoto's just a big ol' nerd. Moshang: Shang Qinghua is the unwanted child of divorce and Mobei-jun had a negligent father and a caretaker uncle who wanted to kill him. If they had kids they would both struggle with showing affection but would absolutely lay down their life for their child. I think they'd need a nanny but I would trust them with a baby. Bingqiu: I would not trust Luo Binghe with a baby unless it was his idea to have kids. If Shen Qingqiu said he wanted a baby, Binghe would agree and then stand over the crib in the middle of the night contemplating smothering the kid and blaming it on sudden infant death syndrome so he would have his husband's undivided attention.
