Iran ‘focusing on hurting the United States’ with Gulf attacks

When asked by Al Jazeera whether it’s a good idea for Iran to be making enemies of its Gulf neighbours with its attacks, Hassan Ahmadian, of the University of Tehran, said “not at all … I don’t think it’s a rational choice”.

However, Iran is actually “focusing – as the official line goes – on US forces, on US bases and basically US interests in the region. And those interests seemingly, as we see in the attacks, include global oil and gas markets,” said Ahmadian.

Iran is “focusing on hurting the United States in the way that can hurt many in the region as well”, he told Al Jazeera.

Iran is targeting energy infrastructure in Gulf countries to “ratchet up the pressure to force the United States to rethink its aggression against the country through driving up prices of oil and energy prices globally”, added Ahmadian.

Macron says France will increase nuclear warheads amid global uncertainty

The French president has announced that his country will increase the number of nuclear warheads in its arsenal for the first time in decades.

Speaking on Monday at the L’Ile Longue military base in northwestern France, home to the country’s ballistic missile submarines, Emmanuel Macron said he had decided to raise the number of warheads from the current level of fewer than 300.

He did not specify how many would be added. It would mark the first increase in France’s nuclear stockpile since at least 1992.

Macron said the move was aimed at clarifying the role of France’s nuclear deterrent in Europe’s security architecture amid what he described as growing global threats and uncertainty surrounding US security guarantees to European allies.

Macron also said France would allow the temporary deployment of its nuclear-armed aircraft to allied countries and announced that France, Germany and the United Kingdom would work together on “very long-range missile projects” as part of deeper cooperation on strike capabilities.

Berlin to evacuate German children, pregnant women from Middle East

The German government is preparing to evacuate vulnerable nationals stranded due to the conflict in the Middle East, including children, sick people and pregnant women, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul says.

Aircraft will be sent to the Saudi capital Riyadh and Muscat in Oman, Wadephul said.

Up to 30,000 tourists from German travel agencies are believed to be affected by the escalating regional conflict, which began on Saturday with US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Tehran has since retaliated, attacking US forces in Gulf states such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates that also serve as key international air transport hubs.

A spokesman for the German Defence Ministry had said earlier on Monday that evacuations would be a “last resort”.

Wadephul said the Foreign Ministry would send crisis support teams to Muscat, Doha and Dubai, while “further teams are investigating the situation at the border crossings”.

German nationals could be encouraged to cross the border into countries such as Oman and Saudi Arabia whose airspace is still open. A team from the German Embassy in Cairo is assisting with the border crossing from Israel.

Israel’s forced evacuation orders trigger ‘mass displacement’ in Lebanon

    By Zeina Khodr

    Reporting from Beirut, Lebanon

The Israeli army has threatened to carry out a series of air strikes across numerous areas in Lebanon, singling out, for example, every branch of al-Qard al-Hasan, a financial institution affiliated with Hezbollah, and saying it will target all of its branches across the country.

There is widespread fear in Lebanon that this could escalate into days of sustained violence.

There was a smoke rising from Beirut’s southern suburbs, a cluster of neighbourhoods that are now largely empty. Since the early hours of the morning, the hundreds of thousands of residents who live in this area have fled.

Israel is clearly maintaining pressure, saying it has launched an offensive against Hezbollah and expects several days of fighting. Officials say they intend to intensify and expand the strikes, warning that Hezbollah will “pay the price” for firing a barrage of rockets across the border in the early hours of the morning, which Hezbollah described as retaliation for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

When Israel issues forced evacuation orders, it effectively triggers mass displacement. Families are forced to leave quickly and seek shelter in safer areas. That, in itself, creates another humanitarian crisis.

We’ve been on the streets since around 3am, watching families pack whatever they can and leave. There was a steady stream of vehicles heading out. We’ve seen people sitting in their cars along the roadside, searching for shelter – in schools, mosques, or hotels.

In southern Lebanon, the Israeli army has ordered evacuations in dozens of towns and villages near the border. Many of those communities are now largely empty.

People are afraid. While Israel sometimes issues advance warnings before strikes, several of the attacks in the past few hours appear to have come without warning. Often, when that happens, the targets are specific individuals.

Russia, UAE reiterate call for ceasefire in US-Israeli conflict with Iran

Russia’s Foreign Ministry says President Vladimir Putin and United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan have reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire between Iran, the US and Israel during a phone call earlier today.

According to the Russian statement, the two leaders discussed what Moscow described as “tragic developments” in the Middle East.

Both sides emphasised the importance of returning to political and diplomatic efforts.

The Russian statement described recent military action against Iran as an “unprovoked act of armed aggression against a sovereign UN member state”.

The UAE president, according to Moscow, said Iran is attacking his country “despite the fact that UAE territory is not being used as a launchpad for attacks against Iran and [the Iranian attacks on the UAE] are therefore unjustified”.

US expects strikes to ‘encourage internal unrest’ or ‘regime change’ in Iran

    By Alan Fisher

    Reporting from Washington, DC

Hegseth says the US “didn’t start the war”, framing the operation as retaliation for actions attributed to the Iranian government since the 1979 revolution.

He cited several incidents, including Iran’s support for proxy groups and the alleged use of improvised explosive devices in Iraq that killed US soldiers.

The stated US objectives are to degrade Iran’s naval forces, ballistic missile capabilities and nuclear infrastructure. US officials described the air operation as highly successful so far. However, there is no clear timeline. Although Trump suggested it could last up to four weeks, his defence secretary declined to commit to a specific duration, saying it would not be an “endless war”.

There also appears to be an expectation, at least rhetorically, that pressure from these strikes could encourage internal unrest and potentially regime change.

However, experts note that regime change would likely require a significant ground presence – potentially hundreds of thousands of soldiers – rather than air operations alone. Meanwhile, opposition groups inside Iran remain unarmed and unsupported, and recent protests have already resulted in thousands of deaths, raising concerns about further crackdowns.

So while US officials say they have clear military objectives – eliminating Iran’s missile capacity, neutralising its navy and preventing it from obtaining a nuclear weapon – it remains unclear how those goals translate into political outcomes on the ground in Iran.

Iraq now ‘directly affected by course of war’, says foreign minister

Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has said his country is now “directly affected by the course of the war”, warning its continuation would exacerbate instability and create chaos in the region, according to the Iraqi News Agency.

Hussein spoke to the phone with British Minister of State for the Middle East Hamish Falconer, during which they discussed the developments of the war and its regional repercussions.

The call included “a comprehensive assessment of the field and political situation,” during which Falconer reviewed his country’s new position, explaining “allowing US forces to use some facilities, while working to facilitate the related procedures”, the news agency.

Hussein stressed “the necessity of intensifying international and regional efforts to reach an immediate ceasefire, which would contribute to containing the escalation and creating the conditions for restoring stability.”

Israeli military releases further details on Hezbollah commander killing

The Israeli military has released additional details about the killing of a senior Hezbollah figure in Beirut.

Earlier, the army said it had killed Hussein Makled, described as the head of Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters, in an overnight strike on the Lebanese capital.

In a statement, the Israeli military said Makled had held several positions within Hezbollah’s intelligence apparatus over recent years and was appointed to lead the unit after his predecessor, Hussein Hazima, was killed in October 2024.

According to the Israeli military, Makled was responsible for compiling intelligence assessments on Israeli forces and coordinating with senior Hezbollah commanders to plan attacks against Israel.

The military added that it would continue operations against Hezbollah.

US mission in Iraq tells nationals, personnel to shelter in place

The US embassy in Baghdad says it has told US nationals and mission personnel to shelter in place, warning of threats posed by Iran-backed groups active in the country.

“The U.S. Mission in Iraq advises U.S. citizens to exercise increased caution, maintain a low profile, and shelter in place until further notice,” it said in a statement, adding that it had directed all staff to do the same.

The embassy warned that “Iran-aligned terrorist militias continue to pose a significant threat to public safety”.

Yesterday, hundreds of pro-Iran Iraqi protesters clashed with security forces near the embassy, with authorities accusing demonstrators of firing live rounds that wounded security personnel.

It had been their second attempt to enter the area after clashing in the morning with heavily deployed security forces.

European gas prices soar by nearly 50 percent as Qatar halts LNG output after Iranian attacks

Benchmark Dutch and British wholesale gas prices have soared by nearly 50 percent, after major liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter Qatar Energy said it had halted production due to attacks in the Gulf country.

The Dutch front-month contract at the TTF hub, seen as a benchmark price for Europe, was up 14.56 euros ($17.04) at 46.52 euros ($54.45) per megawatt hour (MWh), or around $15.92/mmBtu, by 12:55 GMT, ICE data showed.

Prices were already about 25 percent higher earlier in the day, but extended gains after Qatar Energy’s production halt.

Benchmark Asian LNG prices jumped almost 39 percent on Monday morning with the S&P Global Energy Japan-Korea-Marker (JKM), widely used as an Asian LNG benchmark, at $15.068 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), Platts data showed.

“If LNG/gas markets start to price in an extended period of losses to Qatari LNG supply, TTF could potentially spike to 80-100 euros/MWh ($28-35/mmBtu),” Warren Patterson, head of commodities strategy at ING, said. The British April contract was up 40.83 pence at 119.40 pence per ‌therm, ICE data showed.
