For the Summer Games, athletes representing the United States first competed at the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, taking part in the sports or discipline of athletics, shooting and swimming. At the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, James B. Connolly became the first athlete representing the United States to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s athletics triple jump event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing the United States first competed at the I Olympic Winter Games Chamonix 1924, taking parting part in the sports or disciplines of cross country skiing, figure skating, ice hockey, Nordic combined, ski jumping and speed skating. At the I Olympic Winter Games Chamonix 1924, Charles Jewtraw became the first athlete representing the United States to win an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s 500 metres speed skating event.

At Beijing 2022, the United States won nine gold medals for the fifth-consecutive Winter Games. Snowboarding produced the most gold with three, as Chloe Kim successfully defended her 2018 Olympic title in the women's halfpipe. In women's snowboard cross, Lindsey Jacobellis won gold at her fifth Winter Games, 16 years after having to settle for silver in the same event at Torino 2006. Jacobellis also won gold in mixed team snowboard cross alongside Nick Baumgartner, making her the only US athlete to win multiple gold medals in Beijing. In bobsleigh, Kaillie Humphries won gold ahead of silver medallist Elana Meyers Taylor in the newly-added women's monobob event. It was Meyers Taylor's fifth Olympic medal, which is the most for a women's bobsleigh athlete. Freestyle skiing produced the most total medals for the United States in Beijing with eight, including gold medals for Alex Hall in men's slopestyle and the mixed aerials team. In figure skating, the United States won more than two medals for the first time since Salt Lake City 2002, with Nathan Chen winning gold in men's singles, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue taking silver in ice dance, and a gold medal in the team event. In cross-country skiing, the United States won more than one medal at a single Games for the first time, with Jessie Diggins taking silver in the women's 30km and bronze in the women's sprint, becoming the first cross-country skier representing United States to win more than one medal at the Winter Games. Also in Beijing, the US women's ice hockey team took home silver after losing to Canada in the fourth consecutive Olympic final between the two teams. In speed skating, Erin Jackson's gold in the women's 500m was the NOC's first gold in speed skating since Vancouver 2010.
