OPEC+ increases oil production as strikes continue in the Middle East
OPEC+ nations, meeting virtually Sunday, agreed to increase oil production slightly as a new wave of strikes bombard Iran and the surrounding region.
The group of leading oil-producing nations said it would raise its daily output by 206,000 barrels a day after pausing incremental production increases earlier in the year. In the fourth quarter, OPEC boosted production by 137,000 barrels per day.
The group, in a statement, did not mention the conflict, but said it will continue to assess market conditions.
Iran forms leadership council to run country after killing of Khamenei
Iran formed a leadership council to administer the country in the wake of the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The country’s constitution stipulates that if the supreme leader is no longer in power, a provisional leadership council comprising the president, the head of the judiciary, and a senior cleric from the powerful Guardian Council should assume his responsibilities until a new leader is elected by the 88-member Assembly of Experts.
The council includes Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, 67, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, the head of judiciary.
Arafi is an established cleric with a track record in government institutions who was also a confidant of Khamenei. He currently serves as deputy chairman of the Assembly of Experts and has been a member of the powerful Guardian Council, which vets election candidates and laws passed by parliament.

Five people were killed in a direct missile hit on a residential building near Jerusalem, Israel police said in a statement on Sunday afternoon.
Approximately 18 people were injured in the strike on the city of Beit Shemesh, police said.
“As a result of the direct hit, severe damage and collapse of the building occurred,” police said.
Iran launches another wave of attacks on countries in the Middle East
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it has launched another wave of missiles and drones on countries in the region.
Plumes of smoke were seen rising from an area near a port in Abu Dhabi after loud blasts were heard over the city. It’s unclear what struck the area.

Almost 20 people hurt after Iranian missile hit Israeli residential building, rescuers say
Nearly 20 people were injured, including two critically, as an Iranian missile hit a residential building near Jerusalem, according to Israel’s emergency response service.
Two more were seriously injured, including a 10-year-old girl, Magen David Adom (MDA) said, and one person was moderately wounded.
Video from the scene from MDA showed firefighters trying to douse flames and smoke rising from what appears to be a major impact site.
This appears to be one of the few direct impacts on Israel despite waves of Iranian retaliatory attacks. We’ll bring you more as we get it.
