Re:Moto G23 Bootloader unlock request

Hello! I’d like to know how to unlock the bootloader on my Moto G23 to either roll back to Android 13 or install a more stable custom ROM.

Unfortunately, recent updates have only made the device perform worse.
I’ve owned several Motorola devices, and even on the most budget-friendly ones, unlocking the bootloader was straightforward.

While the fastboot flashing unlock command is available, it seems that the CID key either doesn’t match or is missing from the firmware.

It’s disappointing to see Motorola taking the same restrictive approach as other brands.
I chose your product because I expected user-friendly policies
, but now I’m left with buggy firmware and no way to unlock the bootloader.

Please, hear me, Motorola...

Hello  @EasyRoot ,

I know how important it is for you to unlock this phone's bootloader. I'm afraid this model isn't eligible for bootloader unlocking. We'll merge your post with an existing thread.

Re:Moto G23 Bootloader unlock request

I must say that the Android 14 update has been nothing short of an unmitigated disaster on my budget Motorola phone; I am beyond belief as to how everything went from bad to worse. I really do feel that I had been duped into buying a barely functional device. It drastically dropped in performance-the phone became barely usable for anything other than the bare minimum. It freezes any day now-be it switching between applications, browsing the Internet, or even just taking a photo. That's how bad it has become, and I feel I'm using an old rather than a new phone. It takes ages for the apps to get loaded up, and the response of the system is just that sluggish-doing any work on it simply feels like working on some old-time device. It always freezes up completely, and I had to restart the phone. What happens is that whenever I open something, it struggles for the phone to even start loading, and halfway it crashes, nothing started up. The operation of the system goes so slow that I am not even able to surf the Internet because the phone totally lags. And do not even get me started about multitasking-no such thing. In fact, it does not even let me switch between apps without going berserk. Messaging and calling have also become frustratingly tough nowadays.

The most irritating thing is that the fluidity of the system goes to very bad. Animations jerk, lag, and slide really slowly across the screen, creating a feeling that the phone is working in slow motion. It's just that Motorola didn't even bother to optimize this update in the least. Using this phone is like using it in the early 2010s; it can barely run even the most basic things. Every tap, every swipe on that screen just feels like an eternity for the action to finally register, and sometimes nothing happens: the screen flickers, it freezes, and the phone just locks up on you without warning. I don't know what happened between the release of this phone and this update, but it is just like the company surrendered with the device. I am out of words to describe my frustration of continuing to stay with a phone that behaves like this. Irrespective of the price value, I really do not feel this should be acceptable in 2024. I have invested in this phone, thinking it should give me a smooth and functioning experience. I really am feeling with this device that Motorola totally misled their marketing.

And we are not even talking about the battery-that used to be decent and is now a constant nightmare. It just goes down and down at this insane rate, while literally the phone is doing nothing. I have never seen any phone go down that fast, and I don't know why it does. At least the battery life used to last through the day, but nowadays I'm just happy if I can get a couple of hours in one go before having to plug it in. So, powering off extra apps, power-saving adjustments; nothing saves it, this crazy speed. Well, I really thought that budget phones got better over the years, but, boy, this is a step backward. It's like Motorola deliberately started the update, just to make everything worse. In this case, the phone itself becomes unsuitable for ordinary use-the battery is highly annoying in seeking a charger anywhere that was never required earlier. The other big problem right now is with Bluetooth.

It used to work fine, but it is now just full of interferences, delays, and it just randomly disconnects. It is just cutting out all the time, and I am always reconnecting those Bluetooth devices. Video plays are just nightmares; there is always this delay between the audio and the video. It is just nearly impossible to get through or enjoy anything. That is just a basic feature; it should not be problematic, yet here we are, stuck with a phone that can't even get Bluetooth right. Infuriatingly, one would have thought that even for a company like Motorola with this many years of experience, things like Bluetooth would have been fine. I tried different headsets and speakers; it is across the board. How does Motorola not manage to get this thing working?. But the cherry on top is that the bootloader being locked makes me absolutely helpless in self-repair, including even going back to the previous version of Android. I couldn't install a custom ROM and for all practical purposes am stuck with this phone, which got broken through the very update that was supposed to fix it.

What good is a locked bootloader, anyway, when the device is already broken? Devices like the G31 and G41 have this very same chipset and yet they allow for an unlockable bootloader. Yet for whatever reason, Motorola has decided to block that here. Why are budget models treated worse than their brethren upstairs? I really do believe it's deliberate on the part of Motorola with this phone; it would be extremely hard for users to effect their own repairs. Actually, this company is doing literally all it can to make sure customers can't take any action against the problems that it causes. And to top it all off with such a lack of transparency on top of that failure to unlock the bootloader-well, that's just insult over all that injury. The other tradition in which Motorola shows how absolutely it does not take customers seriously is this: the support from Motorola is one big joke. I have reached out so many times for support, and all I get are copy-pasted responses without them helping solve the problems.

That to me feels like they do not care for anything, at least when it comes to customers who buy budget phones from them. What I get as responses are general instruction lines that don't do anything toward the solution of these problems. They never admit the problems are awful, but utter some of the same remedies already tried in vain. Each time I write to support, I get that feeling of talking with a robot. That makes me very angry: just seeing a company which does not even try to fix their products or help their customers out in any way seriously. Now, I've been left with a hardly functional phone. Motorola's support service is fully useless in any of these issues. This is the support team for what? If they do this-reply irrelevant and repetitive responses? I'm tired of them all. And never will I buy anything from Motorola.

Time and again, this company managed to disappoint people without giving a second thought to any customer, let alone its product alone. Lack of updates, performance, locked bootloader, super poor customer service would be nice reasons to swear off the brand. This is completely unacceptable on Motorola's part; whoever listens to me will never buy their devices. That is how they treated their customers, especially budget model users; that is just disgraceful. I feel totally betrayed by Motorola and won't make that mistake again; MSI has earned my trust. Worse to understand is how such a long-time player in this space could design something so unreliable with such bad support. This is the future of Motorola; count me out. They have lost me as a customer for life, and not even my worst enemy would want me to recommend this phone or any other Motorola device to him. Not now, not ever.

Re:Moto G23 Bootloader unlock request

I totally agree, I thought Motorola would be better than other companies, but in the end I was unpleasantly disappointed. Here are the main problems I encountered:

1. Delays with updates - and when they do come out, they are often raw and full of bugs.

2. Inability to unlock the bootloader - this seriously limits the customization options for the device.

3. No firmware rollback - if the update is unsuccessful, it is impossible to go back to the previous version.

4. Ban on entering BROM mode - access to low-level operations is closed, and there are apparently no testpoints either.

5. Removal of CID keys - it looks like the company cut them out on purpose, and they are unlikely to return.

6. Quality of support on the forum - the support is just terrible; the answers are mostly template-based, as if bots are answering there.

7. Bugs in the kernel for the Moto G23 - drivers from another model were uploaded to GitHub, what the hell is this???

I spent so much time trying to improve this device and now I am just disappointed. I hope for the next OTA update that will probably bring back CID keys, but looking at the support, expectations are minimal.
