Between the world’s ongoing Heated Rivalry psychosis and the emotional rollercoaster of figure skating at this year’s Winter Olympics, we’re currently getting a little bit of a glimpse into what it was like in the 1990s—when America was absolutely obsessed with ice sports. Thanks to the “Miracle on Ice” hockey game at the 1980 Olympics and the ascent of Kristi Yamaguchi, Nancy Kerrigan, and Tonya Harding, the pump was primed for a decade of full-on ice sport fever. And 1992 gave us two iconic films to keep that energy going into the era of Michelle Kwan, Tara Lipinski, and Wayne Gretzky: The Mighty Ducks and The Cutting Edge.
Both are cable classics and unexpected franchise starters beloved by a generation of ’80s/’90s kids. But only one has the brilliant idea to combine hockey and figure skating into a single package. In fact, “what if a hockey player and a figure skater were paired up and fell in love” is such an incredible premise, that the movie basically just needed to be passable to find its audience. And for all its corny, cheesy touches, The Cutting Edge is actually way more than just a passable rom-com—it’s a real gem with one of the most unique female protagonists in the genre.
