‘Mel Brooks: The 99-Year-Old Man!’ Review: Judd Apatow’s Sweet HBO Documentary Aims To Please
Image
Early in Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio’s two-part HBO documentary, “Mel Brooks: The 99-Year-Old Man!,” the titular man himself is seated for yet another interview, for yet another show, that’s, yet again, wholly dependent on Brooks’ talent, wit, and humor to entertain the masses. Apatow, perched opposite the near-centennial comedy legend and inquiring about his hundreds of previous sit-downs, asks if he had to create a public persona just to get through all that talking.

“I did a lot of interviews,” Brooks says. “Half of them were completely fake.”

“Do you think people know who you really are?” Apatow asks.

“No,” Brooks says — and we’re off. The documentary jumps back to his childhood in Brooklyn, when Brooks’ father died before Mel was 3 years old. At 18, he was drafted into the Army to fight the Nazis (an experience he may have drawn from in his screenwriting), but not...

How Mel Brooks Changed Comedy, One Nazi and Fart Joke at a Time
Image
Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: A group of cowboys are sitting around a campfire. They’re outlaws and killers and varmints, the lot of them. Tomorrow, they plan on riding through a small frontier town, and razing this bastion of civilization to the ground. Tonight, they’re feasting on a typical cowpoke dinner of black coffee and baked beans. One of these dingy gunslingers lets out a belch. Then the guy sitting across from him … well, he farts. Loudly. So does another cowpoke. That one’s gassy emission is even louder.

Terry Crews' First Movie Role Was In This Arnold Schwarzenegger Sci-Fi Flop
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Terry Crews is known for many things. The muscle-bound actor has been in everything from the hit sitcom "Everybody Hates Chris" to big action movies like the "Expendables" franchise, and he even flexed his comedy chops as President Camacho in the cult favorite "Idiocracy." For all the success that Crews has enjoyed in Hollywood, though, his career got off to a bumpy start. Specifically, his first movie --- the 2000 sci-fi action flick "The 6th Day" — was a massive flop.

The film takes place in a near future setting where cattle, fish, and other animals can be cloned. Human cloning, however,...

The film features Johnson as a secret agent, and is one of the last projects to feature the action star with a full head of hair.

Get Smart is based on the cult-classic 1960s TV series of the same name, which was created by Buck Henry and Mel Brooks as a spoof of the James Bond-inspired spy craze. It starred Don Adams as Maxwell Smart, alias Agent 86, a spy for the Control agency. The hapless Smart was paired with...

The La La Land, Poor Things, and Bugonia star is now an Academy darling, but she was once best known for teen comedies such as this, which launched her into Hollywood and allowed her to start working to become a certified A-lister.

Stone broke out with 2007's Superbad, quickly followed by two more movies essential to her career, 2009's Zombieland and 2010's Easy A. The latter is a modern take on The Scarlett Letter, following a high school student who lies about losing her virginity, accidentally starting wildfire gossip about herself.

Zootopia 2 Claws Past Avengers: Endgame To Become First Hollywood Film To Make $100M In A Single Day In China
Image
Based in the success and popularity of the first movie, Zootopia 2 always looked likely to be a big hit for Disney, but the animated sequel has surpassed all expectations at the global box office, becoming the first Hollywood movie ever to pass $100 million in a single day in China.

The previous record was held by Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame, which took in $97.5M back in 2019.

We'll have full opening weekend numbers later today, but this puts Zootopia 2 well on track to reach (and pass) its $520M-$575M worldwide debut estimates.

Zootopia 2 and fellow sequel Wicked: For Good have given the box office a much-needed boost after a fairly dreadful few weeks.

Dwayne Johnson's 2008 Action Comedy Was Disliked By Most Critics But Found A Fan In Roger Ebert
Image
2008's "Get Smart" didn't exactly debut to widespread acclaim, but it was a box office success and managed to win over arguably the most important critic of the last few decades. The late great Roger Ebert — who passed away in 2013 at the age of 70 — loved this spy comedy, to the extent it almost secured the elusive perfect Ebert score.

"Get Smart" came in the wake of Steve Carell's ascendence following his role as the lovably clownish Dunder Mifflin boss Michael Scott on "The Office." The one-two punch of that now beloved sitcom and 2005's "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" turned Carell into a full-fledged star. As a result, Carell wound up fronting 2008's "Get Smart,...

Original '60s Batman TV Series And '70s Wonder Woman Costumes Sell For A Combined Total Of Over $1 Million
Image
The 1960s Batman and '70s Wonder Woman TV series are a solid foundation of pop culture. In fact, it'd be reasonable to say the two adaptations are two of the most important pieces of fiction in entertainment, period. Even if you didn't watch them when they were originally on, or caught them on streaming or home video, odds are you're familiar with the shows' extremely catchy theme songs, colorful aesthetics, and, specifically on the Batman side, the unmistakable onomatopoeia sound effects.

In particular, one of the most attractive aspects of the shows were their hero costumes, which are now part of Hollywood history. The shows' cultural relevance is still such,...

Holy Memorabilia! Original ‘Batman’ TV Costumes Fetch Nearly $1M at Auction
Image
How much would you pay at auction for Adam West and Burt Ward’s original costumes from Batman? For a Henry Winkler leather jacket from Happy Days? For a Don Adams shoe phone from Get Smart?

Those items and many others from the world of classic television resulted in $3.17 million in sales (with buyer’s premium) on Friday as memorabilia from the famed collection of Dr. Stewart Berkowitz went up for bid via Heritage Auctions.

Batman and Robin outfits donned by West and Ward on their 1966-68 ABC series together sold for $575,000, while one worn by Cesar Romero as the Joker went for $212,000. Other accepted bids were for costumes sported by Yvonne Craig (Batgirl, $87,500), Julie Newmar (Catwoman, $68,750) and Burgess Meredith (the Penguin, $46,250). Add that up and it’s a cool $989,500.

Plus, a Batscanner console from the Batcave and Batman’s Batarang and holster realized another $150,000 and $50,000, respectively. (In fact, seven...

Here are five of the best…

Steve Carell Tried To Play A Batman Villain Before His Exit From The Office
Image
When Steve Carell left "The Office" in 2011, the show immediately struggled to maintain its high quality in the wake of losing the man who so memorably portrayed Michael Scott. The actor departed at the end of season 7, but by that point, he'd established himself as a bonafide movie star, having starred in the 2005's "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" before making some of his biggest cinematic hits, from 2008's "Get Smart" to 2010's "Despicable Me." But during that time, it seems the actor also had ambitions to break away from comedy and family-friendly fare by playing Batman's most infamous rogue.

According to Vulture, Carell was rumored to be in the running...

Terence Stamp at an event for Valkyrie (2008)
Terence Stamp’s Star Wars legacy is more than a cameo
Terence Stamp at an event for Valkyrie (2008)
It’s with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of Terence Stamp, the iconic British actor who brought gravitas to every role, no matter how brief. While many remember him for his famous role as General Zod in Superman, his role in Star Wars may have been small, but it carried quiet significance both onscreen and behind the scenes.

In Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), Stamp, who passed on August 17, 2025 at age 87, portrayed Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum, the beleaguered leader overthrown just as the Republic began its collapse. Though Valorum appears only fleetingly, the role anchors the start of Palpatine’s sinister rise, marking the turning point of the galaxy.

Anne Hathaway's The Hustle Surges on Amazon Prime 6 Years Later
Image
Anne Hathaway has proven to be one of the greatest actresses of her generation. She rose to fame in the Disney comedy, The Princess Diaries (2001), before taking on more serious roles in Brokeback Mountain (2005) and The Devil Wears Prada (2006). However, it was her powerful performance as a recovering addict in Rachel Getting Married (2008) that earned her first Oscar nod.

She continued to star in comedies, such as Get Smart (2008) and several rom-coms, including Bride Wars (2009), Valentine's Day, and Love & Other Drugs (both 2010). In 2012, she starred as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises and played Fantine, a sex worker dying of tuberculosis, in the musical Les Misérables, winning an Academy Award for the latter.

Hathaway reunited with Christopher Nolan for Interstellar (2014), and will once again for The Odyssey (2026), and continued to showcase her versatility in the comedy The Intern (2015), the heist movie Ocean's 8 (2018), and the romantic comedy The Idea of You (2024). However,...

Nicholas Clapp, Documentarian and Author Known as a “Modern-Day Indiana Jones,” Dies at 89
Image
Nicholas Clapp, a documentarian, author and amateur archaeologist who studied, filmed and wrote about the deserts of the world as a “modern-day Indiana Jones,” has died. He was 89.

Clapp lived in Anza Borrego State Park in Borrego Springs, California, and died Wednesday after a stroke, his daughter Cristina Clapp told The Hollywood Reporter. He had been out hiking the day before.

Clapp started out at the National Geographic Society in the 1960s and was a producer and production manager, respectively, on two Oscar-nominated documentaries released in 1973 and 1975: the Leslie Nielsen-narrated Journey to the Outer Limits, which revolved around a climb of the Santa Rosa Peak in the Peruvian Andes, and the E.G. How Rainn Wilson Really Felt When Steve Carrell Left The Office
Image
One of the most recognizable stars of the century has shared his real feelings about one of the momentous moments in modern TV history.

This year, the most popular American sitcom of the 2000s celebrated its 20th anniversary. While the original British version of certainly made a significant impact in the comedy landscape, the American adaptation has more than usurped it in terms of its ubiquity and recognizability in the popular culture zeitgeist, much of which is due to the series' ensemble cast. During what is widely considered its golden era, the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company was led by its regional manager, Michael Scott (Steve Carell). Although the character began the series with a more abrasive, odious demeanor, Michael was rewritten to be more likable, while keeping many of his eccentricities. Even with some of his bizarre methods of leadership, Michael became one of the...

The Only Main Actors Still Alive From The Virginian
Image
After "Gunsmoke" paved the way for adult westerns on television, the floodgates opened up with every network trying to ride the success wave with oaters of their own like "Rawhide," "Bonanza," and "Wagon Train." Chief among them was "The Virginian," which holds the honor of being the third longest-running network western of all time. The NBC series ran for nine seasons and 249 episodes from 1962 to 1971. The distinction it holds over most of its cowboy television counterparts is that it was the first 90-minute Western series, with episodes running for 75 minutes plus commercials.

Loosely based on Owen Wister's 1902 novel "The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains," "The Virginian" had been adapted four times into feature films, with the version starring Gary Cooper considered among his best movies. Almost three decades later, James Drury performed a test drive for the character in a 1958 episode of the half-hour anthology series "Decision." Considerable...

How the First Nite of Nick-at-Nite Came to Be
Forty years ago, reruns became cool. Before that, they were just considered filler for when TV networks couldn’t afford to run anything else.

But then, on July 1, 1985, Nickelodeon launched their overnight programming block — which ran from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next day — and became the first network to present reruns as more than just time killers. They called it Nick-at-Nite. They ran good, classic television shows that were worth revisiting, offering adults comfortable familiarity as they drifted off to sleep or battled insomnia. It was “Good TV for the TV Generation” as one of their slogans put it. And it was a smash hit that made Nick-at-Nite the largest cable network during primetime.

The initial lineup wasn’t even anything all that exciting either: the live-action Dennis the Menace from the 1950s and 1960s, The Donna Reed Show, which ran during the same era, and the 1960s drama Route 66.

Rainn Wilson Says ‘The Office’ Was a “Struggle” Without Steve Carell: ‘We Knew it Was Coming For a Long Time’
Rainn Wilson recently talked about how things changed on The Office after Steve Carell left. He was a guest on the “Good Guys” podcast with Josh Peck and Ben Soffer, and said it wasn’t easy for the cast or the crew to keep the show going after Carell’s exit in 2011. Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute for all nine seasons, said it was a tough adjustment.

“When Steve left, then it was a little bit chaotic of trying to figure out the tone of the show and who’s the lead,” he said. “How are we telling these stories without, you know, the comic engine of the show, which is Michael Scott? That was also a struggle.”

Even though it was hard, Wilson said Carell’s exit didn’t catch anyone off guard. “We knew it was coming for a long time,” he said.

‘The Office’ Star Rainn Wilson Says the Show Was a ‘Struggle’ After Steve Carell Left: ‘We Knew it Was Coming For a Long Time’
Rainn Wilson recently appeared on the “Good Guys” podcast and opened up about the difficulties filming “The Office” after Steve Carell left the show in 2011.

Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute, discussed his experience working on the comedy series for nine seasons with podcast hosts Josh Peck and Ben Soffer. “The Office” co-star admitted in the interview that it was challenging for the cast and production to continue the show after they lost their leading man.

“When Steve left, then it was a little bit chaotic of trying to figure out the tone of the show and who’s the lead and, how are we telling these stories without, you know, the comic engine of the show, which is Michael Scott, and without one of the greatest comic actors in American history at the center of our show. That was also a struggle.” Wilson explained.

No, Mel Brooks Isn’t Ruining His Legacy
Unless you’ve been living under a rock in an uncombed desert, you’ve probably heard that we’re getting a sequel to Mel Brooks’ classic Star Wars spoof Spaceballs. But that isn’t the only decades-old Brooks movie that’s being mined by Hollywood right now.

It was recently reported that the producers of What We Do in the Shadows are working on a spin-off of Young Frankenstein, which is to be called Very Young Frankenstein. And of course, just two years ago, the Hulu series History of the World: Part II belatedly sequelized Brooks’ beloved anthology film. It wasn’t great either.

Play

This has prompted some critics to suggest that Brooks, who turns 99 years young this Saturday, is actively ruining his comedic legacy by allowing other filmmakers and comedians to fumble his brand. But this argument doesn’t really hold up – not just because Spaceballs 2 and...

From ‘The Admiral Broadway Revue’ To ‘Spaceballs’ & ‘Young Frankenstein’: Mel Brooks’ Career On Stage And Screen In Pictures
Mel Brooks has a goal in life. It’s to be funny and make people laugh. In his book, “All About Me!: My Remarkable Life in Show Business,’ he wrote, “Comedy is a very powerful component of life. It has the most to say about the human condition because if you laugh you can get by. You can struggle when things are bad if you have a sense of humor. Laughter is a protest scream against death, against the long goodbye. It’s a defense against unhappiness and depression.”

It’s a mantra that has served Brooks well since it broke into show business as a writer on NBC’s The Admiral Broadway Revue on 1949. He followed that up by working with some of the funniest people in the early years of TV on Your Show of Shows (1950-’54) with his lifelong friend Carl Reiner, The Imogene Coca Show...

‘The Office’ Star Rainn Wilson Admits Keeping Show Going After Steve Carell Exit Was a ‘Struggle’ | Video
How do you keep a beloved show going after its equally beloved star decides to take their career in a new direction? It’s a question that “Grey’s Anatomy” has been navigating for several years after Ellen Pompeo dialed back her leading turn as Meredith Grey. And before that, “The Office” lost its comic center when Steve Carell exited completely to focus on film work.

“The Office” co-star Rainn Wilson admitted in a podcast this week that it was a struggle for the cast and creative team behind the NBC sitcom to keep it going after they’d lost its star.

During a Monday appearance on the “Good Guys Podcast,” Wilson told hosts Josh Peck and Ben Soffer that “The Office” became “a little bit chaotic” in the aftermath of Carell’s departure.

“When Steve left, then it was a little bit chaotic trying to figure out the tone of...

Check Out Buck Henry’s Brutal Roasts of the Original ‘SNL’ Cast Members
Of all the members of Saturday Night Live’s Five Timers Club (those celebs so hilarious that SNL asked them back to host at least five times), Buck Henry is clearly the most obscure. While Henry did his share of acting, he’s most well-known as a comedy writer, the pen behind classics like The Graduate, Catch-22 and Get Smart. But besides Steve Martin, Henry was the original cast’s most popular host, headlining the show 10 times between 1976 and 1980.

In 1979’s Rolling Stone Visits Saturday Night Live, Henry introduced the Not Ready for Prime Time Players. “Personally, I have never thought that they were very funny,” he explained. “What they have engaged, by doing whatever it is that they do, is not so much my admiration as my sympathy.”

Here are Henry’s scorching-hot roasts of each of the early SNL comedians…

‘The Naked Witch’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: Anthony Eisley, Thordis Brandt, Alvy Moore, Shelby Grant, Tony Benson, Robyn Millan, Warrene Ott, Helene Winston, Burt Mustin, Rudy Haydel | Written and Directed by William O. Brown

In the 1960s, horror films made a pivot from monsters and evil scientists to supernatural evil. The 60s saw witches and warlocks, satanic rituals and human sacrifices. This was a new decade and a more real threat. These films felt real. That neighbour down the street that you seemed to never see could be that threat.

Well, at the end of the decade in 1969, director William O. Brown brought the world The Naked Witch. But this film is also known under a bunch of other names as well, including The Witchmaker, Witchkill, The Legend of Witch Hollow or The Witchmaster. Rapidly approaching its 60th anniversary, the film has been restored and released on Blu-ray thanks to the good folks at Vci Entertainment and Mvd Visual.

Top Gun: Maverick embroiled in another lawsuit
The 2022 mega hit Top Gun: Maverick has been hit with another lawsuit – this one involving its screenwriter’s cousin.

A year after one case was dismissed, Paramount Pictures again finds itself in court in a lawsuit related to its 2022 blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick. This time, the cousin of one of its credited screenwriters is suing the studio, alleging that he carried out uncredited – and unpaid – work on its script.

The lawsuit’s plaintiff is Shaun Gray, the cousin of screenwriter Eric Singer. Gray’s better known for his digital effects work on such films as Get Smart and Piranha 3D, but according to his complaint, Gray spent “five months” working on the Maverick script at the invitation of his cousin.

Maverick’s script was ultimately credited to Singer, Christopher McQuarrie and Ehren Kruger, but Gray alleges that he “wrote key scenes for the screenplay that became the film’s central edge-of-your-seat dramatic action sequences.
