Iryna Zarutska killing Wikipedia article incident

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Following the stabbing incident at Charlotte, North Carolina on August 22, 2025, the controversy occurred on Wikipedia due to the alleged nomination of the article's deletion.

Background

[edit]
Iryna Zarutska stabbing incident occurred at Charlotte, North Carolina on August 22, 2025.

On Friday, August 22, 2025, at Charlotte, North Carolina, Iryna Zarutska, 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, was stabbed to death by 34-year-old Decarlos Brown while riding a train home from work.[1]

Controversy

[edit]

On Sunday, August 24, 2025 (the creation date of an entry), two days after the incident, one of the Wikipedia editors allegedly attempted to delete the entry regarding Zarutska's death, arguing that it does not meet the notability.[1] Because of this, the outrage erupted among social media users, arguing that the online encyclopedia "was erasing her story," as well as the similar US crimes warranting permanent entries.[2] Not only Wikipedia editors allegedly attempted to delete the entry, but according to The Free Press, Wikipedia editors allegedly fought to remove the name of an accused murderer Decarlos Brown Jr.; however, one editor "jumped in and removed the alleged assailant's name."[3] Therefore, this alleged action cites the violation of WP:BLPCRIME policy, even the crime policy is stated that editors must consider that those individuals who are not public figures who are accused of crime are innocent until proven guilty unless they are convicted of a crime.[4]

In over 24 hours, the entry was subjected to nearly 350 modifications, and the editors ultimately voted to keep the article.[3]

Reactions to the Wikipedia entry controversy

[edit]

According to Tara Servatius, the host of "The Tara Show" on 98.9 WORD FM, individuals affiliated with the left-wing were allegedly "canceling Iryna Zarutska for the crime of embarrassing them by dying."[5]
