What's the proper disposal of old USB sticks?

I have a bunch of old 2.0 USB drives going back 10 - 15 years that I would like to dispose of. Small 256mb - 500mb flash drives that are all under 1GB.

What's the best way to avoid adding electronic clutter to the landfills?

If you ask me, if you have proper means to double check they have no valuable data, I would just look into what recycling options you have for tech stuff in your area.

An USB contains plastics and some other materials that can be recycled.

But first take a hammer to each drive with a good, hard whack.

I have a plastic bucket in the garage that I toss old electronic bits and pieces (except batteries) into. When it gets full, I take it to the local electronics recycle drop off (in my case the Salvation Army store) where I can dump it into a big bin of recycled electronics junk for free. Also larger items like old computers, old TVs and monitors, anything electronic.

Usually any kind of storage media (disk drives, USB drives, etc) I will physically destroy before recycling, using either a hammer or an electric drill.

Glue them together and make an artistic sculpture!
