HOLLYWOOD -- 'Gremlins,' a film about nasty little beasties, has snapped up five 'Saturn Awards' with honors for best horror film, best direction, best special effects, best music and best supporting actress.
The film by producer-director Steven Spielberg won the most awards Sunday in the 12th annual Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films presentations at the University of Southern California cinema school.
'The Terminator' was voted the best science fiction award and 'Ghostbusters' won best fantasy film of the year.
Jeff Bridges won the award for best actor for his performance as the alien in 'Starman,' and Daryl Hannah was voted best actress for her performance as a mermaid in 'Splash.'
Tracy Walter and Polly Holiday won best supporting performance awards, respectively, for 'Repo Man' and 'Gremlins.'
Little Noah Hathaway won the best juvenile performance award for his role in the children's fantasy film, 'The Never Ending Story.'
Best directing honors went to Joe Dante for 'Gremlins.'
Only Dante, Bridges and Walter, among the major winners, attended the hour-long presentations.
The other winners were: best costume, Bob Ringwood, 'Dune;' makeup Stan Winston, 'The Terminator;' special effects, Chris Walas, 'Gremlins;' music, Jerry Goldsmith, 'Gremlins;' screenplay, James Cameron and Gail Ann Hurd, 'The Terminator.'
The George Pal Memorial award was presented to director and special effects innovator Douglas Trumbull.
