What makes it unique:
This "opulent" estate was in practically the same condition it was when it was built in 1984 by a contractor magnate named Jimmie Lee “J.L.” Johnston, who lived with his family in the home in the coastal community of El Granada, said Compass realtor Patrick Ryan, who listed the property. From the abundance of rare purpleheart wood (Peltogyne porphyrocardia), to the carpet-lined pools, to the open-glass elevator and the helicopter pad, Johnston's vision for the home was a very particular aesthetic, and not for everyone, said Ryan. "It's one of the most unique properties I've ever seen, and certainly on the San Mateo County coast," said Ryan, who added that the home was "extremely" well built. However, less than a decade after building it, Johnston made a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing and the home was bought in a foreclosure sale for $2.1 million, according to court documents and Ryan. The new owners used it as a residence and kept Johnston's luxurious details throughout, like the expansive red carpet, three-story chandelier of 3,000 clear crystals, 18-karat gold-plated fixtures, fish-shaped saltwater swimming pools, a rotating dining table (so guests can see the ocean) and a gargantuan main suite. "'Massive' is a word that was used," said Ryan. At least a few buyers were interested in purchasing the home for their nonprofits, he said, adding that he was not privy to the actual buyer's identity, since the purchase was made through an LLC.
