On a whim I decided to look for listings for X230s. I already have one I got for cheap a few years back, I was just curious. Looks like they've gotten pretty expensive recently (at least, compared to the average price I'd see back when I was in the market for one), and there aren't any lots to take parts from and repair to then take one and sell the rest to to make your money back.

T-series are more or less the same. Older X-series have always been relatively expensive.

It's gonna suck if/when my X230 ever dies. Even with coreboot/libreboot compatibility, the T480 just isn't the same.

Anyone have any advice for fixing the bezels on thinkpads? I have a T520 that has a crack in the bezel at the hinge and really don't want it to get worse.
>>
>>108226457
i'm sure you can find replacement parts online. barring that, look for a dead unit with an intact chassis and harvest those bits
>>
>>108225645
>>108225677
those things sure look nice but is there any real use case for x230s these days? at least with the t480, its quad core is still fast enough for web
>>
>>108226457
Epoxy probably, but is it really just the bezel and not the hinge mount breaking off the cover?

>>108226992
I still use my dual-core X270 for web browsing and there's also quad-core modded boards for the X230
>>
How is the T14 gen 1 thought of? I found an AMD model (R7 4750U, 16+512) for a bit more than 495 models (if you throw in having 512gb over 256 then it becomes the same). It is (a bit under) double the price of T480, but a lot of those come as 8+256, and the cpu is more than twice as fast, so going by numbers alone, it seems I'd get more power/ram/storage for the money.

guess i can ask here

i have a t420 and the ram is giving me problems. at least 1 of the module gives me errors with memtest85 on a single specific address

thet pc still works fine btw, it's just that sometimes random bits are getting corrupted here and there, so eventually it's gonna implode but whatever

my question is: should i bother with pressured air on the ram stick or alcoholing the stick's attachment thingy or just throw away the ram?
>>
>>108227621
worth a shot, don't cost nothin.
>>
can someone spoonfeed me please what do I look for on ebay (eu de) if I want a ryzen based Thinkpad with at least vega 6, and ability to get it to 16gb dual channel (either coming with 8+8 or just 8 and I'll get another after?
its either Thinkpads or elitebooks 845 g7.
>>
>>108227688
T14/T16, E14 Gen 2 (or higher) and E15 Gen 2 depending on CPU/E16, P14s/P16s, for example
>>
>>108227688
Just look on Kleinanzeigen.
What's your budget anyway?
>>
>>108227776
don't the 14s have soldered ram?
>>
>>108227837
I did already, its pretty barren.
around 200€
I found 845 g7 4650u refurbs on ebay. thought maybe Thinkpad would be better.
>>
>>108227850
or rather, I looked in my area. I never used Klein with shipping before and never used ebay..
>>
>>108227838
Depends on the exact model, I think. Most have at least one SODIMM slot as long as they aren't the slim models notified by "s" (as in T14s, as opposed to T14), the PXXs models being the exception. But do your research on the exact models available for you.
>>
>>108227917
is it hard to pick ram to work in dual channel along soldered one though? that's why I was confused
>>
>>108227953
It always runs in dual channel when the slot is filled. It's good to use a SODIMM with the same speed as the onboard chips or higher so it doesn't downclock.
>>
I have a X61, W500, X220, T440p and T480. What should I add to my collection?
>>
>>108228019
I see .. thought you had to match it a lot more

I used to rock a T480 but it was in really bad shape. Like falling apart, held together with hot glue. I decided to get a T470 for $60 on ebay because of the part sharing it has with the T480. I was able to keep my ram, NVMe, Batteries.
I love this thing. The keyboard is so much nicer then my old one. I don't notice any performance difference despite it being gen 6. I know shills online won't shutup about the T480, but the T470 is often overlooked and I hope that continues.
>>
I got a t42 for parts that works but has artifacting in the de. Not sure if it's a driver or the ati Gpu is kill, but it has the 1400x1050 panel.
Is it possible to swap this panel into my T23? They had an optional panel of the same resolution
>>
>>108228186
I use a T470 keyboard in my T480 just for the more pleasant green and orange lights, also keep the T470 it came from as a backup
>>
>>108228215
Definitely possible. I once swapped a T42 screen into a T60. I think screen swaps were more forgiving back in those days.
>>
any idea how to fix the trackpoint buttons of my x220 not working?
>>
>>108227953
Once you decide on a model, just look up the speed and timings, and buy a module to match. I'm sure you can get by with matching speed but if you really want to ensure congruence find one with the same timings.
>>
>>108227621
RMA the DIMMs, mfgs do really have lifetime warranty if you dig up a receipt pdf and email them.
Pic related my new DDR3 sticks just arrived under RMA, manufacture date 2026 week 6
>>
Also wondering how it is possible that manufacturers make ddr3 still to this date, are they hoarding this many old chips for this long? Who buys ddr3 today, no shops hold any new dimms or especially soddimms in stock!
>>
Which models are the best value right now for $200?
>>
>>108227042
Bezels are very fragile on all Thinkpads.
>>

this german hardware shop has quite a bit in stock at least.

this is the exact config t14g1 i picked up a couple weeks ago and have been using it daily, i'm enjoying it a lot
have another 16gb ram stick coming this week too, i'll get to storage once 512 starts not being enough
>>
how much am I going to hate myself if I get the UK keyboard variant?
I don't code
>>
>>108236685
once you swap out the keymap the only real physical difference is the backslash key, unless the placement of that key is very important to you then i don't see why it would make a major difference
>>
>>108236739
I'm really only worried about left shift being short. its making me paranoid.
didn't even know this layout existed, so its kind of messing with my head.
>>
>>108236805
actually, can that key next to the short lshift be remapped to also be a shift? that would solve it
