Forum: forums Subject: Upload Error: 400 Bad Data when trying to add files (SOLVED)

I'm trying to add files to an already existing collection, to be exact its zip files containing mp4s of mobile game cutscenes since it'd be spam to post them all by themselves. The folders I'm attempting are multiple gigabytes large, for context. Recently I'm being met with 400 Bad Data.

I have attempted restarting multiple times and re-uploading altogether to no progress. UPDATE (10/19/2021): I have since solved the "Bad Data - Unacceptable Upload // Can't Read Archive" Problem. I achieved this by changing the file names to be much more basic to rename later on. Example; "Jungle1," instead of "CHAPTER 1 - JUNGLE," as well as splitting the large upload into two seperate parts to shorten the amount of folders it has to go through.

400 Bad Data
BadContentUploaded content is unacceptable.
Resource=image file has non-image contents: application/octet-stream…

What this means:
• The file you tried to upload has an image extension (like .jpg, .jpeg, .png), but the actual file contents don’t match an image format.
• Internet Archive rejected it because it detected the file is actually being read as binary/unknown data (application/octet-stream) instead of a valid image.
• That’s why it suggests extensions like .bin, .dll, .exe etc.

Likely Causes:
1. File corruption – the image file may have been damaged during saving, transferring, or exporting.
2. Wrong file type – the file might actually not be an image (e.g., renamed from .bin → .jpg).
3. Upload bug – sometimes uploading through a browser session glitches and mislabels the MIME type.

Fixes You Can Try:
• Open the file locally on your computer — make sure it actually displays as an image.
• If it opens fine, try re-exporting or re-saving it as a clean .jpg or .png (e.g., using Preview, Photoshop, or even an online converter).
• If it doesn’t open, the file is corrupted — you’ll need to re-download or regenerate it.
• Clear browser cache/cookies or try a different browser, then re-upload.
• For batch uploads: try uploading one file at a time to see if it’s a specific file causing the error.

I split a 15GB file into 1GB parts and when I wanted to upload them to an archive, I get a message saying either there is an error or the upload is going back to the beginning. Really bad for a site like Archive Library. There are encyclopedias that I would like to share, but unfortunately the site is heading towards closure or sale, I think.
I also had a problem deleting files. I upload small parts of an encyclopedia, but the other part gives me an error message. When I wanted to delete it, the site doesn’t actually delete it. It’s sad and disappointing.

this exact thing has happened to me with files larger than 4GB and to solve it i would just split the file in two.

i don't know how, but we got the same problem; mp4's inside zip files so the system doesn't recognise it and sometimes with large files, two times to be exact.

There is no problem with your files, the problem is with the site, it is simply trying to restrict freedoms
