by Srsli
A cozy slice of life / adventure.
Trevor has been training since he was a child for a life of combat and adventure, 10 years of gruelling training.
On the year of his 15th birthday, the day of choosing arrives only to have his entire world crushed as he is assigned the class ‘Arcane Chef’, an unknown rare class with no known history or levelling path.
However, being a cooking class, he’s relegated to the Servant class of society. Our journey travels through his struggles to come to terms with this class and trying to keep his friendships intact, and make new ones if at all possible.
Unbeknownst to all, Arcane Chef will have a drastic impact on the world as a whole and Trevor will get to experience all those adventures he has dreamed of. Well, he would.. If only he could work out how to level the class.
Join Trevor as he discovers his class, travels the world, and seeks the glory, adventure, and friendship he thought he had lost.
All while cooking amazing food.

Delightful, cozy LitRPG - a fast favorite!
Reviewed at: 21: Healing
Arcane Chef is a delightful, feel-good LitRPG with a refreshingly original class and skill set. The main character is kind, hardworking, and a joy to follow. Lighthearted and engaging without losing momentum, this story quickly became one of my new favorites. A cozy adventure with plenty of charm and flavor.

It reads like one piece.
Cooks like your favorite fantasy cookbook.
And keeps a pace and plot most slice of life stories should be envious of.
On top of that the characters are well written, the world building excellent, and character interactions that cover the spectrum not just endless wins and losses but great and terrible moments along side stupid idiocy, egos, haggling, and everything else that makes a well rounded character.

I just finished reading all the current chapters. I am 100% enjoying this story. I love the system you have set up and the characters you have introduced so far. I can't wait to see where you are going with this, if/when he returns to his hometown if he will have to deal with the lord and how....GREAT STORY

So a review.
First of all I will say that I enjoyed this story. Enough to become a Patreon subscriber.
It falls right into my wheelhouse of things I enjoy.
That said, it's a deeply and structurally flawed story starting from the first chapters, and when trying to write an objective review, I'd be dishonest if I didn't take it into account.
Let's go over it step by step.
Style Score: 4/5
The style of writing is for the most part competent and evocative where it needs to be.
It's easily readable, flows well and the food descriptions work.
Grammar score: 4.5/5
Almost perfect. Can occasionally have a spelling error, or a misplaced word, but won't affect how you read the story.
Story score: 2/5
With a protagonist that is a textbook example of a Mary Sue, I have to be harsh on the story score as a whole since this snowballs into everything else. It causes harsh structural issues that I can't overlook.
Character Score: 2/5
Trevor, the MC, is a textbook Mary Sue while all supporting characters are likable but exist primarily to enable Trevor.
Now for the actual review:
This is a competently written but deeply flawed story, that can nonetheless be a joy to read for those who are a fan of the genre or who are willing to overlook a protagonist that is essentially Perfect.
What works:
* Clean, readable prose
* Food descriptions that are engaging (and often makes you hungry)
* A world with interesting elements, even if it doesn't do anything unique.
* Fulfills the promise of a cozy, low-stakes cooking adventure
The Main Problem: Trevor is a textbook Mary Sue.
In 150+ chapters and less than 6 months in-story, he goes from level 0 orphan to archetypal chosen one status. Beloved by all, protected by powerful beings, facing no meaningful obstacles.
Examples:
Trevor, who was explicitly described as never having done any real cooking before getting his class, has in 150+ chapters not failed at cooking a single item. Nothing has been burned, overcooked, over-salted, or otherwise made inedible.
The one time Trevor failed at cooking, it was because he made the cooked item too good and ended up in a mana overload coma. Said coma had no lasting effects, except for him being forced to learn a valuable and important skill while he had nothing better to do anyway.
None of Trevor's flaws, such as naivety, affects him negatively. Sure, he gets 'ripped off' when he goes shopping, but when he has enough money that he doesn't even notice, it doesn't matter.
Every named character who spends significant time with Trevor (post-academy) ends up either mentoring, protecting, or helping him. Jackson, Kara, the adventurer team, Micca, craftspeople - all become devoted supporters within chapters of meeting him.
Who should read this story:
If you're tired of grimdark stories, or just want a story where the protagonist succeeds and is beloved by all, then this will satiate that need consistently.
This is pure power fantasy where the MC succeeds without effort and everyone loves him for it.
Avoid this if:
If you're looking for characters who have meaningful stakes, or grow through struggle, or want consequences to matter, then this is probably not the story for you.
Final thought:
This is professionally written cozy power fantasy. If that's what you're after, you're going to enjoy yourself here. Just don't expect to be surprised by anything in the story.
The author, Srsli, has been transparent that this is intentionally cozy and low-stakes fiction, and for that niche it succeeds quite well.
A Child's Wonder in a Scary World

When I started reading this story, I thought I'd be much harder on it. On the surface, its protagonist seems naive and not the brightest, its secondary characters appear flat, and the plot and setting aren't the most original. However, I came to realize that all of this appears so surface level as a way of presenting this world through the protagonist's eyes; my initial antipathy is just because its been so long since I've seen someone craft an excellent story and then wrap it in familiar generic trappings. There is little more I can say than this novel is incredible and absolutely worth your time.

it’s refreshing to see an MC who truly embodies the support role. Too often, I read stories where the class (usually alchemy) gets brushed aside, and the MC suddenly morphs into some overpowered combat demi-god. Here, the MC stays true to their role, and you make it both engaging and impactful. It’s a rare and much-appreciated change !

I had this sitting in my TBR list for a good, long while. About 3-4 days ago I started with chapter one and here I am caught up just shy of 120. This review has a few chapters behind it.
The story is great. Trevor is likable, well-fleshed out, and really comes alive on the page. His skill is super interesting, at least the way the author approaches it, and the plot is gripping. This could be a show that I would treat like Ted Lasso; something fun and almost cozy to enjoy (and one I’m going to keep returning to, I can just tell). I just really enjoy the story. And I love the cast! Nobody’s been real one-dimensional, which I’ve found most every story has a few like that. The author’s love and dedication to the story really show through, and I think that makes it worth the read all the more.

Love this story so much, it's a but of slice of adventurer life, cooking related and a cat that just won't quit. I can't wait for more. And my favorite character of them all the little fire sprite that helps with cooking and keeping the fire alive. Absolutely genius and I want more.

This story is very well written!
The pacing and progression are very smooth, never feeling too quick or too slow.
The characters feel believable and unique, like how Trevor tends to be naive, due to not being taught important, but common, knowledge when he lived in the orphanage. But he isn’t stupid or foolish, and he still makes smart decisions, such as referring to the experience of others when he gets new skills, rather than picking whichever one sounds best to him in the moment. The other characters all feel like different people, and they each have unique motivations, which makes them feel more believable.
I also enjoy how the System is present in the story, but not constantly in your face, as often times, Trevor will summarize what it says, especially if we can already assume what it would say, or it will just show the specific thing that is being focused on, using the MC’s perspective, which makes it feel more natural, and not just something for us the audience.
The abilities of the protagonist feel reasonable, shown to be rare and useful, but not world-shattering. Like, Trevor isn’t going to make a bowl of oats that permanently increases all stats, or whatever. If he makes something truly potent, it takes a lot of effort and rare ingredients, which makes the story interesting without becoming too easy or boring.
Personally, I especially enjoy learning what each ingredient does and how they work together, and I feel that the way it is portrayed tends to be informative enough without being overbearing or bloated, which is a big plus in my book!
All-in-All, the feel of the story is very refreshing and interesting! I enjoy the ‘feel’ of it greatly, and I highly recommend it!
