Yeah I've always found this guy's stuff to be about as funny as you can expect from royalty-free edutainment. The characters look and act like the IRL writers they're based on and you can tell he is passionate about history and whatnot. I'm not going to begrudge a sperg with a school newspaper comic for liking to read books. It's weird how angry some people are getting over the fact that he likes the idea of a capital gains tax. I come here to see Dave Cheung-level shit.

I don't like this, though. He's spreading etymological disinformation by propagating the myth that the word "unraed" has anything to do with the modern-day word "unready". While it's true that the title (byname?) was given to him posthumously, unraed would be translated closer to "uninformed". This is something that is usually mentioned the first time you hear about this guy, if you learn about him from a teacher or textbook. I am offended, give me money.

it annoys me more when it's supposed to be an animal like in this instance a bat but the only bat motifs are the wings. The character barely looks like a bat you have to squint to see the features.

Sorry I havem't been able to post here for a while but some pages ago some farmer mentioned ZenPencils. From what I remember, ZP was critizised for not understanding the Philosophy behind his comics. He had a business model where he took inspirational, motivational quotes and made a comic around them.
He got called out on it for obvious resaons. If I make a business where I sell "Live, Love, Laugh" or "I think, therefore I am" coffee mugs then no one bats an eye but if suddenly I'm calling my coffe mugs Post-Modern art and throw a hissy fit on Twitter (while still selling those mugs 3 for the price of 2) then I'm not beating the disingenuous faggot allegations.
For example, does anyone knows Ken Robinson? He's a Ted Talker, all around writer, education advocate and cripple. Why is it important? Because he always bitches and moans about how education standardts are falling and it's the teacher's fault (I wonder if importing the entire third world had anything to do with falling standards though?) and he always makes a jab about teachers being horrible dances because, you know, he's a crip. Here's ZP giving him a tribute (linking it because long and I don't want my computer catching AIDS):
Kenny seems to think that not enough importance is being given to the arts in favour of silly things like math and language. ZP takes his quote and makes a gay comic about a ballet dancer needing no stinkin' algebra because he's the artfaggiest artfag that has ever sucked on a cock. There is merit to having a full body education, mind and body are connected which is why sports are needed for kids ages 6-14. If you're terminally online, you might be autistically good a trigonometry but you will cut off your dick and start calling yourself Lilly. But ZP thinks that people only need to be good at 1 and only 1 thing and all things are equally valid, hence not understanding what Kenny was writing about.
Let's go back for a second to 2014. We have established that ZP is just a business that takes inspirational quotes and then sells them back to you without giving them thought (just enough to hoodwink Karen into buying his book) so some entrepreneurial spirit decided to edit his comics and replace them with Dril tweets. He has a tumblr and it's still up in 2026 (you need to go back all the way to page 73 to find the edits):
As you can see, the quote is secondary, you can replace the comic with whatever the fuck you want and it will still make sense.
Sure enough,the allegedly boy molster Gavin Aung Than threw a tantrum while screaming how unbothered he was (not so zen now, are you buddy?). You see, this was not someone adding swasticas to his comic, someone just said to the whole wide world that the emperor has no clothes and that, my friends, is a Narc Injury. If you have seen any common denominator with all webcomic artists on this thread is that they are Narcs to the eleventh degree. So what does this Pinoy motherfucker do? Make a 4 part comic about how every artist in the world unite to defeat the evil monster that is online trolling and sending it to the moon. It is as cringeworthy as you might expect (warning, extreme AIDS):
And that blew the floodgates open to everybody and their grandma making fun of an entitled nepo baby that was lucky enough to have parents who supported him whil being a cartoonist. He gave up on the crusade when someone must have told him he looked like a 5 year old stomping his feet because mom didn't put his macarroni art on the fridge. The /pol/ edits were fun and you can still find a couple of them in a lol thread.
Finally, people shit on Gav because his only consistent belief is "be an artist for art's sake" and he illustrates that in this comic where some dude watches Game of Thrones, has some unseen mental breakdown, quits his job, crafts an armor, buys a longsword and decides to suicide by cop. In this hapa's brain this is an inspirational story but to anyone who does not have a trust fund this is insane:

I hate it when artists give characters wings and then make them tiny for whatever reason. I guess it gets in the way of seeing her ass. Nice broken spine batgirl.
The way the tail and wings and general other features are drawn gives me an impression that they took inspiration from the sonic glownigger bat from sonic adventure 2.
Ironically the glownigger bat looks more like an actual bat somehow despite not looking anything like a real bat. Likely due to it meshing with the stylization of the other animal mascot characters.

Yeah, I remember that guy, there was a review of his comic on the Bad Webcomics Wiki, that basically stated the same points as you. He misunderstands the source material of his quotes and his comics are just generally motivationslop with no deep meaning except for "Forget your responsibilities! Follow your dreeeeeeeeeeeeeeams!"
But at the end of the day Zen Pencils has been over for 8 years now and Gavin seems to not be active on the internet, except for Instagram, where he advertises his kids' books.

And clearly he's not using them to fly, they're some kind of stylish head fin thing.
Suppose I should amend myself; some head wings can be interesting or funny or whatever, but "ooh I drew an angel so she has little feather wings on her head that she flies with" just gets on my nerves because it's trendy and I'm difficult.
Why is this giant comment focusing on ZenPencils being basic and bad at taking criticism when THAT was just a one-off sentence??? Did he actually molest someone??

This comic is extremely inaccurate. Dad being old and grey watching his son in the ballet? This guy is high off his balls. Junior will be washed out and dealing with arthritis at 27.
To say nothing of the anal trauma.

Definitely do see it now because that design of the bat has that typical furry look which is the adjacent to the anime cat girl which is just an anime girl with cat ears and a tail. It's weirder with this perspective because it's like the artist (and generally this is true with most furry artists) want to mash realistic with cartoony animal motifs so you gave weirdly simplistic ideas of what the animal aesthetic is but stuck on a strangely humanoid looking body.

I took ballet from when I was 5 to about 12 or 13 when I got too tall, my ankles and knees still hurt from time to time, butt is fine though. I can't remember who it was on the Bad Web Comic wiki that has a big hate boner for Zen Pencils but it was a mighty one, and not entirely unjustified. He really was the LIVE LAUGH LOVE of webcomics.

But that's not a bad thing per se. At least 60% of instagram is just mommy comics or office-bad comics. Everyone just chuckles, see if the store page has any interesting merch and moves on. ZP tried with all his might to be seen as some sort of intellectual when he's as shallow as a puddle. He is the embodiment of the artist that grows a beard, wears a bonet and keeps referencing authors that are too obscure for you. If this was high school he would get the shit kicked out of him (which is what happened because there are dozens of strips where he goes, "heh, see JOCKS, the nerd ends up as the winner in life")
